  1. The "all-in-one" content distribution service... on EA's Sims Online Is A Flop And Other MMORPG Musings · · Score: 2

Is already alive and kicking. Forgive me for being a TFC fan, but Valve came out with Steam, which was a server browser for essentially all of the "in-house" mods of HL (CS, TFC, OpFor, Ricochet, DMC, etc) yet faster and leaner than GameSpy (Also: No ads!). Given, this is only for HL and its mods, and only mods under the auspices of Valve (or Sierra? I'm not clear on that) yet the ability for a company to offer one server browser/launcher for all their games, as well as updating capability is there. I got Steam off my campus' gaming club FTP with CS 1.6. (Counter-[Racial slur meaning 'one who is Jewish or of Jewish or Hebrew heritage or descent'] is the name around here) It seems to me that Sierra is planning on making this a service extended to any pay-to-play online games of theirs because thay have a "price" column in the "my subscriptions" browser.

  2. One step closer to AR on Intel's 'Personal Server': The Handheld Killer? · · Score: 1

AR = Augmented Reality (Anyone remember an article on that? If not, google it up, it's interesting.) If it has the capability to run as a server, what's to say someone can't rewrite the OS/firmware to actually facilitate AR. With the bluetooth capabilities, most or all of the instruments needed for AR (GPS, video screen goggles, everything else would be integrated into the pocket server: wireless connection, information proccessing capability, HUD generating software) If people can make a linux-based OS that fits on a single CD and runs off that CD without having to be installed, AR is not far down the road with this device. Then again, who would need a HUD for everyday activities?

Who in their right mind would go out of their way to skim approximately $1700 from BGa and get something they're not even skimming for? If they are going to mod the box to run WinMCE, but not actually make it useable by MCE, I find that, in a bor tome of voice, irrelevant. (Not to /., but to modding xboxes.) Gee. Let's work the numbers: $2000 (Win MCE equipped PC) Total Cost: $2000 (And you have the full capabilities of an actual PC!!)
