  1. Re:But is the data actually transmitted anywhere? on Android Dev Demonstrates CarrierIQ Phone Logging Software On Video · · Score: 1

While you are correct, most applications have some type of debugger to log events in case something goes wrong so that a root cause can be determined after the fact.

Not saying it does or doesn't send it, just saying the video doesn't prove anything but a debug log of events is written.

I was wondering the same thing. I would expect that if I hooked my phone up to a logger that it would grab everything including key strokes. How else could something be troubleshooted if the device had an issue.

I didn't see anything showing the device logging an outgoing network event to send the data anywhere. Or any other type of snoop showing data being sent to "The Man"

Some think it doesn't need to be running all the time but I could see this as being useful if the device suddenly had a serious error and you had to send it in to the device manufacturer to diagnose what the heck happened. Although it is sneaky. There should be an opt out of the software running.

  3. "If I die" folder on Ask Slashdot: How To Securely Share Passwords? · · Score: 1

I have a "If I die" folder in my filing cabinet, which includes stuff like my will, life insurance info, billing info, bank info...

In addition I started creating a .txt file with important computer information, logins, account info, etc... I put that txt file on a USB drive and put it in the folder. If I change any important account, or password I insert the USB stick, update the txt file and put it back.

My wife also has a folder similar to that. I figured it was a simple way of doing it.

  4. Here are mine... on Which Vendors Do You Trust For PC Parts? · · Score: 1

Honestly if you plan on getting everything all at one place be prepared to end up probably paying more, no website seems to have the best prices on everything. Newegg probably comes the closest, but since I live in NJ I too have to "shop" around to avoid the Egg tax. Also since computers are an expensive hobby I kind of created a routine that I follow to get good prices on things...A little time consuming but if you are trying to save some money well worth the time.

When I go shopping this is usually how I do it...

First I visit Newegg.com and using their superior search function I find the product(s) I feel is fitting for the job. I check out their reviews, and price including shipping and tax(I live in NJ).

Next I visit these three sites which I have ordered from and have always had pretty comptetive pricing, Mwave.com, Zipzoomfly.com, and Ewiz.com. I also sometimes glance at specialty sites if I feel the item may be cheaper there or just to check and read reviews. Clubit.com, Frozencpu.com.

I also check the big/retail names just in case there may be a deal, Amazon.com, Buy.com, Tigerdirect.com, Compusa.com, Frys.com, and Bestbuy.com and the like.

Lastly I check these three pricing websites for the item to see if there is any place that may have an amazing price but less than satisfactory customer experience. If it is a low price I try and figure out if its worth it depending on the likely hood that I'd have to return it.

    pricegrabber.com
    bizrate.com

For the last 5 machines I have built(from web surfing machines to gaming rigs) I have used this method and I have saved a ton of money than if I just bought everything from 1 site. Also honestly if you order your parts all on the same day then the chance that you won't get them all within a few days of each other is slim to none. So returning them shouldn't be a problem.

I almost bought a 900 a few wEeeks back. I'm glad I didn't because now I can get a 900 for 399 with a 8.9' screen and 16 gig hard drive at newegg. Or find a good deal on regular 900's at lots of online retailers(100 Mail in rebate). Although the 901 is better, I'd rather save 100 bucks and get a slightly lesser processor. I mean the whole point of this thing is to be simple and surf the web. The upgraded processor isn't really worth the extra 100 IMHO. They really need to get these things in local stores nationwide, and then they'll be cooking.

  6. Install/Uninstall Oh My! on What's Fedora Up To? Ask the Project Leader · · Score: 1

As an avid tester of various OSes my main problem with Linux is the ease of installation and removal of programs, drivers, and packages. Microsoft has made improvements with add/remove program selection which usually works with most programs. MacOS has made it easier by just allowing you to drag the application to install it and throw it into the trash to uninstall it. What is Fedora doing to prevent the casual user from having to enter the terminal to install and uninstall certain programs, drivers, and packages?

Well the two degrees are pretty much the same. Forensic Experts are usually Forensic Anthropolgist...and Archeology is a Anthropological Degree also.

I don't see why this is so groundbreaking, Forensic Anthropologist have been teaming up with Archaeologist for years...Thats one of the jobs they can do if they decide not to work for law enforcement.

Or maybe I'm just missing the point of this post all together.

  8. Mont blanc pens = trouble, stick with Dr Grip on When Word Processors Are Out: What's The Best Pen? · · Score: 1

I worked at a jewelry store that also sold Mont Blanc pens and we always seemed to get lots of returns for them. For one thing they are extremely expensive for what you get, they are fragile, and DO break often. Although I must say a few people got "lucky" pens that lasted for years. But honestly it seemed like 8 out of 10 pens were crap.

After selling them and using them for like 4-5 years, I gave up on them and now I stick to my Dr. Grip's. They are somewhat cheap, less than 20 dollars, and they feel really comfortable in my hand. I especially like the dual pens they have..like the pen/pencil one and the pen/stylus one. They are perfect for school when you try to look cool and only have one writing utensil :)

I agree with the idea of not totally revamping our grammar punctuation system, but a few shortened words like "r" and "u" couldn't possibly hurt that much.

Anyways what could it hurt American English is already butchered up enough as is.
