  1. Exactly. on Apple to Use Intel Chips? · · Score: 1

Why would the switch from IBM PPC chips to Intel PPC chips be any different than the switch from Motorolla PPC to IBM PPC. Same platform, different supplier.

  2. Look for Pearl Jam to pioneer this! on Wal-Mart to Launch Online Music Store · · Score: 1

Pearl Jam has finally fulfilled their 10-year contract with Sony Epic Records. They have yet to sign with another label and seem to be testing the waters for the possibility of not signing at all. Their first independent recording is a single, Man of the Hour for the upcoming Burton flick, Big Fish , which is available for purchase only directly from the band. They have also really embraced the iTunes Music Store. Granted the releases on this page are Sony releases, but it seems likely they will follow suit with their own agreement on their next album. Take a look at their implementation: here

  3. Re:No, people. Online learning company. on Web Browsers and Text-to-Speech Solutions? · · Score: 1

Good guess, but Thinkcage is my personal space....as is my slashdot login. The company is Advanced Academics. We are already in business helping kids and school districts every day. Unfortunately, a remedial program is not an option, despite what you (and I) think. And I do agree with you. I'm looking for technology solutions here, not opinions about the methods.

  4. Wacom Tablet on Mouse Not Required? · · Score: 2, Insightful

I'm a graphic designer and I have used pen-based graphics tablets for several years....(I used my first one in Windows 3.11).

After some period of adjustment, many people will use a graphics tablet as a complete mouse replacement....the only time I use a mouse is for FPS games. However, for most other games (and applications for that matter) it is better than a mouse. I feel I can move through the environment with less effort and more precision.

And repetitive stress is lessened. Much of the stress of using a mouse is in the way you rest. Most people assume a resting position when using a mouse that holds their first finger arched over the left-button awaiting the next click. However with a pen-based input, you can rest on the heel of your hand much like when writing.

Give it a try. The models from Wacom are the industry standard.

  5. Maybe not but they can be irritated... on Mouse Not Required? · · Score: 1

While it may be true that there is no direct connection, the ganglion in my wrist is often inflamed and sore after periods of lengthly computer use. It may not be the cause but it does directly effect them.

  6. Re:Built in OS TTS on Web Browsers and Text-to-Speech Solutions? · · Score: 1

My further research has led me to believe that the built-in OS options have to be the best solution.

I looked at third-party plug-ins, active-x controls, etc. Unfortunately most of them are not cross-browser/cross-platform/inexpensive/etc. Not practical for imposing on a low-tech user.

The other solutions either involve real-time server-side processing and streaming (*shudders*) or a cumbersome desktop application and streaming media.

OS X seems to handle speech very well...but I can't figure out how to use it in Windows. I have the Speech control panel in Win XP that allows me to choose speech engines, but I have no idea how to actually get anything on screen to read.

  7. Re:Cart before the horse? on Web Browsers and Text-to-Speech Solutions? · · Score: 1

I agree 100%. But I'm not in charge of curriculum - only web dev. It was made clear to me that offering a remedial reading course is not something that our customers would support. Its very sad, really, that school districts are measured by graduation rates and dropout recovery, instead of creating well-rounded, educated human beings.

  8. Re:Am I the only one that's astounded... on Web Browsers and Text-to-Speech Solutions? · · Score: 1

That is exactly the issue I raised to our curriculum director. While the solution that would best suit the kids would be to teach them to read....the reality is that we have to offer courses that the school districts will fund and remedial courses aren't part of the budget.

The kids we target are alternative students....drop-outs, discipline problems, pregant, etc. Completion is the driving factor....not holistic learning. Kind of sad when business decisions are made in priority to education decisions but in this age of ridiculous public school funding it is reality.

  9. Re:NFL Sunday Ticket on SBC Considering Buying DirecTV · · Score: 1
I'm not sure exactly where this stat comes from, but here is my source:

So the year in which the NFL renewed the DirecTV monopoly on Sunday Ticket, denying the chance to watch any game to the majority of the U.S. taxpayers whose taxes fund the stadiums that make NFL profits possible, concludes with the NFL denying the nation's capital permission to watch one of the most dramatic NFL games ever. (DirecTV fans, please don't bomb me with more e-mail. I have nothing against DirecTV, which is terrific if you can get it. The problem is that only about 10 percent of Americans get it, and millions cannot receive the DirecTV signal at any price, for technical reasons).

  10. NFL Sunday Ticket on SBC Considering Buying DirecTV · · Score: 1

Could this finally open up NFL Sunday Ticket? The NFL recently re-upped its contract with Direct TV to offer its subscription-based NFL games package exclusively to Direct TV viewers. There is something fishy about this arrangement as it is very clear that Sunday Ticket would be many times more profitable if it were open to other cable systems instead of the 10% or so of NFL fans that even have the option of Direct TV. I'll bet Fox would have something to say about it.

  11. Advanced Academics on Taking High School Classes, Online? · · Score: 1

I'm an employee of Advanced Academics so I hope I can address some of the misconceptions here.

What we offer is accredited online high school curriculum. 100% of the course is taken online, including testing. No textbooks are required. We have a full time staff of teacher assistants available 24 hours a day. Students enrolled in our system can get help anytime via email, telephone, or even using our internal chat system they can talk to an actual, live certified teacher.

In most cases we partner with your child's school district to give them a turn-key online program. In some states students in online programs receive state funding just as if they were taking classes in a regular school, which makes our program free to those students.

While I agree with many of the comments here about socialization, the primary purpose of our program is to allow schools to help students that can't be helped by traditional means. Sure, most students are better of in a classroom. AtariDatacenter only says that his student has left the formal education system but there are many reasons that kids leave school....discipline problems, sickness, pregnancy, incarceration, etc. Online programs in these cases can help students that simply cannot benefit from a traditional classroom envrionment. Furthermore we help students that need to make up a missing credit, want to get ahead, or want to take a class that their school doesn't offer.

I don't think that online high schools will replace the brick and mortar schools anytime in the near future, but there is a huge population of non-traditional students that can greatly benefit from this type of program. And with the appropriate legislation in place, they can do it for free like other forms of public education.
