Way back in the day when I was admining some SGIs we got this kind of stuff all the time. Of course, I had no idea about it until the head admin from computing resources comes running over in a huff asking where Machine X was. He had gotten a cal from the feds about one of my machines hounding folks on IRC.
It turned out I had left a default lp account unpassworded (they shipped SGIs that way apparently) and some script kiddie simple ran a scan for SGI's on campus and tried all the lp accounts.
I gotta say that was a humiliating experience, but it really got me interested in network security;-)
the moral of this anecdote is that admining linux/UNIX still requires vigilance.
Remember, fellow/.ers, security is a process, not an end result.
and i also said that this represents an instant failure to understand the nature of religion and science
pointing out that some people don't understand that science and religion don't have any thing to do with each other does not invalidate the fact that science and religion don't have anything to do with each other
And as an aside, the clarinet only has odd harmonics, therefore the upper register is an octave and a fifth above for the same fingering.
tell me about it. For anyone learning woodwinds out there, I highly recommend learning the clarinet first. Master it and every other woodwind is a transposition and/or embouchure adjustment only.
After learning the clarinet, the saxophone or (for you Jethro Tull fans out there) flute is a cakewalk.
Not to mention you can play some bitchin' klezmer!
See, this is one of the perception and knowledge conflicts I have with my own socialist friends. When I try to explain that the reason the health care system in the US is screwed up because of government intervention, I get accused of getting into a circular argument.
Chicken and egg.
But I disagree, because I (IMHO) think that interactions between various humans are too complex to be modeled (at least at present.) What socialism does is attempt to model human behavior and apply those models on a broad scale.
the problem with this is a lack of interaction diversity. One weak link in the global government model brings the whole system tumbling down. However, in a voluntary cooperative economic system (capitalism) the diversity of systems creates robustness against failure.
One must take evolutionary biology into account, especially noting mass extinctions, to get an idea why diversity inherently creates robustness and survivability, and why broad, global actions such as those imposed by government and/or coercive monopolies are simply not sustainable in the long run.
Its in the rocks (fossils) and in the biosphere, folks.
Negotiate does not belong in quotes in your post. What I am referring to is the very essence of negotiating, where two parties come to a mutually agreeable exchange.
Growing up in the West does not change the definition. A negotiated settlement is one where both parties agree, given that you are on your toes to the game.
Oh, and respect is not given, it is earned. Perhaps by savvy negotiating...
I apologise due to my not being clear in my views here. In America, one belongs to a clique or subgroup, especially when dealing with homosexuality. You either are gay or you aren't. Or maybe you are bisexual, but none the less you are categorized or compartmentalized. State ON or state OFF.
Saudi life does not involve compartmentalization with respect to male sexuality. One can be gay one day, bi the next, and straight the following week (or year, etc.)
In the US, IMHO, one subscribes to a team, and most facets of your social life are expected to revolve around that particular team.
Well, not so much, IMHO. It actually seems that this is a more enlightened version of homosexuality, where the need to be identified with a community [geek, hacker, prep, gay] is subservient to just blending in. Heck, according to the Atlantic article groups of old men commonly sit around at street cafes and give approving looks to "young studs."
They are discreet, not self-hating.
and no, I don't approve of sharia law, but that should be irrelevant to a discussion of differing cultural attitudes on homosexuality.
It is just not spoken of; a communal taboo of sorts. In fact, many Saudi gays find the American lifestyle of obvious expression of homosexuality degrading, preferring the "closeted" version.
I choose to work an hourly job for four hours a day, 5 days a week. It's not particularly low-paid or non-skilled, and it is a lot of fun.
and I have a BS in engineering from one of the better colleges in the USA (and $20,000 left in student loans) and a fancy certificate on my wall saying that I passed the FE exam.

Recent investigations and studies in neurotheology http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neurotheology point to scientific reasons for religious behavior.
So, correct me if I am missing something here, but this would be science treading directly on religion.
cry. This stuff sucks.
srsly, this is it.
And the Intertubes are bringing it to us (with our own "truth detectors" installed of course)

actually, its "ya'll." You are correct regarding the latter.
Jumpin' Jesus on a pogo stick, sarcasm escapes you uptight Blue Staters.
what are you, some damn snob-assed English student? I'm from the South, where we speak whatevah the hell we wanna!
And yes, just because those nukes are still missing doesn't mean that this is NOT a big deal. -OJ
nice link.
The Viking landers did use RTGs. Pioneer 10 and 11, the two Voyager probes, Casinni, and New Horizons all do as well. I don't remember about Galileo.
As a perpetual virgin I take offense at this term.

Dumb joke. Sorry.

This is why Mexicans and Asians try to haggle at Wal-Mart. In their world, everything is negotiable. As it is in professional America.
