There are some good suggestions in here for adds to the browsers.
However, my concern is with the unwashed masses. "We" will look through the list of cookies coming through, and make adjustments, but we are a tiny percentage of the population. My desire is not so much to protect our community from the spies, but to immasculate the spies on the web entirely. What was the statistic that 97% of all net users have never downloaded a program? So junkbuster/webwasher whatever isn't going to cut it. Mozilla (Netscape is now owned by "the Man" so I doubt they will do anything) needs to put in these fixes as well as a simple filter thats "on" by default. How many posted here even knew the "send cookie to requesting server only" setting existed in Netscape, and we are the knowledgable ones. Anything that doesn't come installed and turn on is not going to put a dent in the incredibly lucrative business of spying on the the unknowing internet masses.
Not saying anything bad about Slackware at all, but just saying that he is from the old school, and I think Slackware will stay a traditional Linux distribution, unlike the big changes going on with Debian, RH, etc. So for all "command line" people, you needn't fear.
Yeah AC, and everyone responds to that comment with this chestnut. Are you saying you are unable to raise your own kids? Just because some people can't doesn't mean that no one else can, or that anyone else wants to raise somebody elses kids. If you have a tree that grows into someone elses yard, you are responsible for cutting it back, if your dog bites someone, you're responsible for the med bills, if you 1rst grader shoots someone in the neck, you are responsible. I have yet to see a shitty kid that didn't have either biological problems, neglect problems, abuse problems, or some other form of parental incompetance.
He's totally right, you're totally wrong. The only voting criteria in the U.S. is that you be a citizen, sane, and not a convict. Any other B.S. criteria, is just that. America is built on the fact that the stupidest mf'r in the world gets a vote. They don't have to prove anything, or take a test, or flog themselves to be worthiness. Who made you God to decide who gets the honor of casting a vote on things that effect everyones lives?
There needs to be a place besides slashdot for this stuff. It's funny, but the furthest off topic I've seen yet on/.. Dude, you need to put your creative energy to work someplace. You're wasting it trolling here. Someone needs to start a slash style creative writing page. That could actually be pretty cool. Thats your assignment for tomorrow class... P.S. It's hard to pick your favorite episode, isn't it?
This is a must read for all Linux zealots. I tried to say something along these lines in a post to yesterdays Delphi article, but I did not put the same thought and effort into it as this guy did. This article is important for Linux freaks to read because this is how the rest of the world outside of the community looks at Linux. They community has trouble understanding that the world doesn't care about open/closed, MS/RH, or any other opposed forces. If you want Linux to be big, this article shows the path to it being a huge success with the other 99.9997% of the world.
I have been a slashdot reader and Linux user for the past 1.5 yrs. New, but not too new. I didn't used to give Linus a bath or anything. I am a programmer and yes I have released code under the GPL. (All talk and no action makes Jack a hypocrite.) My observations of slashdotters, and the Linux community in that period has been that many have a problem seeing and understanding those in the non-community, which is basically the entire world. The rest of the world does not like screwing around with Perl, OS's , IP stacks, or anything else that we find so enjoyable. Most are interested in having their computers run properly so that can get their report written and go home. Of the Windows developers I know and or work with, all have long since left multiedit and the like text editors behind. For them to move to Linux, they need to have somthing similar, and all the IDE's I've looked at for Linux aren't there. The only one I know that has a built in GUI builder is KDE Studio. (I would be interested in any others if they are out there.) There is no RAD. If you ask a Linux and VB person to create a treeview menu, Mr. VB is gonna win in a race. N's comment and several below are baffling to me. The rest of the world doesn't care about standarization commitees or whether it was designed for windows. Delphi is a tool that is desparately needed for Linux, open preferably or closed if necessary. Maybe some in the community want to keep it closed to anyone except those that follow all of our rules. If so then Delphi on Linux would be bad. It would bring in a large group of people from the outside, and increase the number of apps, open and closed. I am not one that thinks this is bad. How can you be against more options in Linux?
I have to agree with SurfsUp. Corel is down because it had a "Linux" spike a few months ago that drove it up into the freaky, netherworld of insane stock prices. It's just coming down to reality as are all that had a "Linux" spike. I also don't think that Corel's only product is Linux, so saying that that its Linux is the albatrose (for sale) around their neck is not founded either.
Hopefully, their day of retribution is coming soon. I am just baffled by the mindset of the people working there when this sort of thing appears, again. Maybe they can't help themselves, like children that see something good created by someone else and they just get the urge to knock it over. I await the day when they are force to sit quietly in the corner because they can't play well with others.
This may be a stupid question, but what are the changes of Apple, or the possibilities of someone else porting this to i386? This does sound like an almost perfect OS, but I'm not read to move to Mac just yet.
I didn't see in the article that it would be open source. It said they would open it to other companies. That doesn't mean open source. It may just be that it is given out to other companies, but they can't release the source.
Doesn't GUI stand for graphical user interface? Your talking keystrokes, my man. The keystroke for printing in windows is point and click on the little picture of the printer. Dump on windows all you want but you're out in left field like many old school unix/linux users on GUI. I won't get into the mouse vs keyboard arguement, but I have had several GUI classes and there ain't nothing intuitive about sequences of keystrokes. For new users, all tests show people learn with quickest with the mouse, (except little kids who have problems with mice not built to their scale) You are asking the wrong questions.
As is generally accepted, women are raised as social beings, men are raised as solo, physical object related beings.
Girls are given dolls, ponies, social toys. Boys are given cars, guns, shovels, non-interactive toys.
You then have a profession, that requires many, many hours of solitary work dealing with a mechanical object.
Not only that, but I think everyone would agree that it tends to attract the least social of the unsocial gender.
It has nothing to do with ability or dedication, but they don't want to do something boring.
Someone do a survey. I would guess that it is simply that it is not as attractive to them as other positions. CS needs to be presented to women as more than a lot of money. It has to be enjoyable.
This is a serious question, I am not being funny, but this seems the right place to ask it. I understand you can filter Jon Katz out of your Slashdot account. How do you do this? Thanks,...really.
I think he was simply referencing the comment about pirating use DeCSS. I don't think you have been following this case closely. It's not about pirating. You can pirate video tapes or put them on the web alot easier than DVDs. It's about control.
@Home is responsible for as an ISP for the spam its users produce because it is the only entity that is able to stop the spammers. If they refuse to be responsible, and all of their clients get screwed as a result of their inaction, it is on their shoulders. They have been asked and instructed how to correct the problem multiple times. They richly earned this...
You need to read yesterday original posts on this. There is no legal requirement for others to forward someone elses posts to a newsgroup. You are under the assumption that newsgroups function because people are legally required to. Newsgroups function because everyone works as a "community" to benefit all. If @Home can't play nice, the community won't let them play. Who the hell would they going to sue anyway?
I would suggest that people visit the AFA (http://www.afa.net/) page to understand where they are coming from. It is a very sad place. There is little to nothing about families, and almost everything about fear of others. Fear of Howard Stern, "Domestic Partners" benefits, 7Up commercial with the "Make 7... Up Yours" bringing down their society. These people spend their time, effort, and lives working to stop 7Up commercials, and Howard talking about bowel movements. I honestly feel very sorry for the waste of resources, and the unhappiness they must feel. Check out the wide variety of books available in their bookstore.(You can never own too many bibles.)

Damn,...I mean... Good God,... that is ugly! Where to begin? It has succeeded in failing at least two functions, possibly many more. I next suggest a lawn mowing chest of drawers, and a tv trash compactor. I think I saw this thing in a book of cold war KGB equipment.
What is he talking about? Is it his wife or a bookstore he is talking about? What is the difference between selling Daniel Steele and CD player? I think Jon has attributed some qualities to Amazon that were never there.

Excellent. You're preaching to the choir here, though. Be sure you post this, minus some of the sarcasm, as a reply to their BS.
