As a former AOL employee, I can say that Steve Case had no idea how to get the whole to add up to more than the sum of the parts.
Time Warner was a company that did not have any real connection between the different operating entities. The different operations were in completely different industries with little ability to tie them together. So there was a telecom company, a movie company, a TV studio, a TV network, a cable company, a cable content company, a magazine company....
And then Steve Case came along and talked Gerry Levin into a merger. Any dope who could do a simple stock valuation knew that AOL was about growth and that its stock price was going to go into the shitter once growth leveled off. And anyone who looked at the numbers on subscriber growth could see that it was going to slow down in 2002 or 2003.
So Time Warner a company that never was much more than a bunch of companies who all had "a Time Warner" company on their masthead. Gerry Levin could not bring them closer together and he looked at Steve Case as the guy who was going to bring it all together. Too bad that Steve's team that he put together were such idoits and ran their mouths rather than listening. And the Time Warner execs just sat back and waited out them until they had enough dirt. Then they went after each one and got them fired (although it always says they went off to do other things).
So this whole thing is about corporate governance, office politics and hubris.
It would really be nice if they just let you put this into paypal or other online payment systems. They spend a huge amount of money just going the hand processing and for postage ($.37/$5 = 7.4%).
Its about money going to the cert companies, training companies and testing companies. Which I wouldn't mind if it really meant something. These guys have pushed certs for so long just to make sure there was support for their product and to pocket a bunch of change. Does it really cost $500 per student per day to put on a class? Don't think so. Does it really cost $150 per hour to run a testing station? Don't think so.
And the license that you need to run a business is all about money that the local government wants.
So count me out on the added taxes hassles and overall mess.
PS: I could I get a little off the top, trim it so the hair is off the ears and trim up the back.;)
The problem with most software development is not that the debuggers are good, bad or indifferent but that the makeup of the team. Ususally there is nobody in charge of tools, who just writes/finds needed tools and who can educate the programmers in how best to use the tools - including debuggers.
So I am not suprised that debuggers still have not gotten anywhere cause general program development has not really evolved as you would expect. We all have lost site of the idea that productivity is total output / total input of the whole team but instead focus on our little part in the bigger picture even if we are screwing up the project in the process.
The problem with everyone getting so damn happy about Linux being embedded is that as tough as it is to write Linux apps, it is doubly tough for embedded. And just cause they use it does not mean much. Do you really care what brand of engine is on the jet you ride? No, of course not. Are Sony and company going to open up and let you change their software or they just going to use Linux inside (and slap on a Linux Inside label (made out of all the left over Intel Inside labels))? Look at the great Tivo. It built a great product on top of Linux but about all you can do is upgrade the hard disk.
What we really need is much better tools and hardware. One really geat beginning to that need just was released - Qplus Target Builder. This is the first decent open source embedded toolkit. Check it out - soon to be moving to sourceforge.
But then you also need some good hardware and its nearly impossible for the hobbyist to figure out what is decent and what is drek in all the offerings out there. Then you look at the prices and they are out of control. Has anyone found a good source of fanless embedded hardware that does not cost over $500 for a $100 piece of hw? Send me mail if you have.
They are not as clueless as you are, that's for sure. Chopping down a large part of a forest will destroy the habitat for animals and other species living there, some of which may be very rare.
As for rare food, I like sushi but woodland creature should be well cooked. After all they have been running around a germ infested forest for god knows how long.
I would suggest that:
1. Be moved off shore hosting facticity.
2. Reverse the letters or something else in all documentation on the site and loudly exclaim that PCI-SIG is the rightful owner.
3. Just have one of the free speech groups tell them to screw off.
You also have the stuff from locust world for mesh networks.
