I think it should be pretty simple if any vegetable/fruit product has has genetic material from a different species spliced into it to be labeled as GMO....that is so far away from other hybridization in the 'natural' way.
I'd say also, if a virus was used to splice in genetic material to do this..label that.
Both of these methods are so far removed from natural, or more traditional man driven mutations/hybridizations that labeling at least those resultant plants would be a prudent set to label.
What would be the problem with that?
Heck...I'd appreciate it if varieties of strawberries/oranges, etc, in your example were labeled too....? That would just be nice for information purposes only if nothing else.
How complicated is your tax return? Is it complicated because it has to be for the gov't to collect enough money? Or is it complicated because there are hundreds of different tax rules to encourage certain economic behaviors?
Taxation should be VERY simple.
You make $x, then you pay y% of it....no deductions, no loopholes, etc.
That way it would be fair, everyone would pay lower (for the most part), and taxation would be what it should be for, funding necessary govt. operations.
It should NOT be used to try to mold human behavior....I don't believe that is a constitutionally mandated role the govt (state or federal) is supposed to play, is it? I thought it was only there to ensure you had the freedom to live as you wished...?
The real problem you have is that you are eating frozen fishsticks
Amen!!
You'll do MUCH better in life quality, health, and waistline by cooking real food from scratch and leaving behind all that processed crap. Sure, it takes a bit more time and thought, but you can eat healthier and cheaper than crap food, if you just give it a try and learn some cooking skills.
I tend to look at the grocery store weekly ads each week, and plan my menus around what's on sale.
I hit the 2-4 grocery stores on like Sat or early Sunday morning (make a list), and I do my weekly cooking on Sunday, I cook about 2-3 main and a couple side dishes...or maybe just cook some 'ingredients;, like grilling veggies or meats on the grill and from those I can whip up quick meals during the week from those.
By doing this, I eat better than most people around me...I don't get bored eating the same old shit each week day in/day out, and my food bill is not high.
I bring my leftovers for lunch during the week, and evenings, and with the money I save, rather than waste calories on fast food (aside from the occasional 3am guilty pleasure I'm trashed and needs ANY food on the way home)...I take my money and go to a nice restaurant with food that is likely above even what I can or would cook at home, along with good service, wine...etc.
Seriously, for awhile...try this when grocery shopping. Shop only the perimiter of the store...where you'll find the veggies, dairy, meats, etc.....avoid the center aisles for the most part , where you're eating processed foods with ingredients that virtually no one can pronounce. Look up what's on sale, then, google for recipes for using those ingredients....try something new.
I've found that if you're a guy...you can REALLY impress chicks if you can cook.
On the flipside of this, what has happened since I was young to where virtually NO women these days know how to cook?
alapenos can be hot, but it doesn't mean they're always very mild or even hot. The Scoville units can range up to 10,000, which will burn you. Instructions should always urge caution,
Well, one problem with jalapenos, like you mentioned...is that you can't count on them to have a steady temperature. I think it is due to some assholes somewhere deciding it was a good idea to try to breed the heat out of them and make a 'mild' jalapeno.
Trouble is...now in the usual grocery store, you have no idea just by looking at them if they are regular heat, or bell pepper hot.
I've gotten to where, unless I'm growing the jalapeno, I pretty much only use serrano chiles as a substitute. They are a bit hotter, but at least for now...they are pretty much of a uniform heat anywhere you buy them.
I actually tend to like the 'crisp' flavor of the serrano over the jalapeno too.
I must be stupid. I've cut birds eye chilli up and twice now made the mistake of going for a pee. I'd say that I'd never do it again, but I said the same thing the first time I did it.
I've done that...and the same thing after eating a bunch of crawfish and forgot to wash hands BEFORE peeing.
You'd think you'd only forget that once.....but...
They obviously didn't do this study a couple of weeks ago in LA during Mardi Gras!!!!
I think the 'happiness meter' would have blown through the roof if they did....
Or, perhaps they did this poll on Ash Wednesday, when everyone here was hungover?
Either way, I have a hard time believing the LA is in the saddest category....everyone here seems to generally be upbeat, happy, and glad we live in (at least in the NOLA area) a place with no open container laws, and you can get a drink 'to go' from a bar...and there's always a festival going on year round.
All the moaning about genetically modified food seems to forget that we've been meddling with the genetics of our food since prehistoric times. Admittedly we probably weren't using viruses to do the meddling before, which puts a different complexion on things, but still. Edited DNA is rather the rule, not the exception.
But things are a bit different in this case..in the past, it was only cross-breeding between same species.
Splicing in genetic material from a jellyfish into a soybean plant is quite a bit different.
I would posit, however, that we SHOULD have labeling called for to let us know what is GMO and what is not...so the customer can more easily make informed decisions on what they'd like to purchase and eat.
I dunno what the problem with that is...seems a logical, straightforward thing to do. We have to label processed foods with ingredients, and I'd say that a GMO food is somewhat more 'processed' than the non-gmo versions, no?
Is this stuff treated just like the FDA treats any sort of medicine that we put into our bodies or does it just get rubber stamped through like a natural food?
Well, considering the FDA and USDA are these days, merely turnstiles of people rotating in and out of the industry..basically letting them make up the rules and pass whatever they want in their interests....it really doesn't make much a difference what either dept does, as long as it tows the companies' collective lines...
I'm afraid the whole concept of opposing something that is reasonable, because something unreasonable might present itself later is ridiculous.
I suppose I can see your point, but only if one thinks the 'something' is reasonable (or even will be effective) in the first place.
I do not...I would only support the national background check IF...they had it written in law that could not be repealed separately, that once the check was done, that ALL information about the person and the weapon in question be permanently purged from the system. If they did this to prevent the creation of a person/weapons database...I might could get behind this.
I disagree with your conclusions, and point out that your scope is much smaller than mine, and if you look at the scope of my assertion, there is a reasonable assumption there is a correlation of the data.
You're looking at only two specific citties...and let's face it..Chicago has LOTS of problems and factors into all of this....
I think the abortion thing was a trend in lowering violence of the US in total....of course you can pinpoint some exceptions to this, but in general from what I've seen, the numbers add up for the US in total.
If I were to only drive it on my privately owned land, I would not need to register it.
I don't go around shooting my guns in public (the rare case would be self defense, at home in most cases, in public if I had a carry concealed licenes which would be a 'registration")....so, I do not need to register them with the govt.
Again, if I lawfully own and use my guns, what reason does the govt need to know that I am a gun owner and what arsenal I have?
If anything has been shown, the govt can't be trusted with that data to keep my privacy...ie, the recent news papers getting the info and publishing gun owner info.
Take a look at the excellent documentary, Freakanomics...it has a pretty interesting explanation of this theory that the drop in violent crime over the years seems to coincide with the legalization of abortions.
Conservatism is the politics of fear. What you describe is typical. They're not opposed to what's actually being proposed, they are opposed to where they fear it might lead. Their imaginations always follow the worst case imaginable, even if it's improbable, and assume that's what will be.
I don't think I've ever seen a law that has been passed for one meaning and one use, that has NOT been stretched and twisted over the years by the govt to try to extent their power or use it in ways not intended.
It is actually VERY prudent, to stop and think what could happen to any new law in light of this...and make sure that if something new IS passed, that it is passed as very specific to what is intended, and force the govt to pass new laws or amendments to said law if they want to extend its reach past its original meaning and intent.
Most I know are also completely okay with universal background checks since from what myself and others have read most of the weapons used in illegal crimes are coming from legal dealers that are selling without the checks or they come from gun shows where the checks are not required.
Well, one fear is this is a first step to the federal govt. compiling a national list of firearm owners...keeping this as a record, which would be VERY valuable if there ever came a time when they would like to confiscate citizens' weapons.
Even if they put a clause in to the national background check saying the records would be destroyed immediately after approval/rejection...it likely wouldn't be long till the law was changed and they started tracking this.
I've never had to register a gun I've ever bought or owned, nor have I had a background check (although I would pass with flying colors). I bought my guns used from private individuals, and the state/fed govt really has no business knowing what or how many guns I own. I commit no crimes with them....so, they have no need to know about them.
You clearly wouldn't know "extreme left" if it bit you in the butt. What passes for "left" in the USA is the extreme right most everywhere else.
Well, considering Slashdot is a US centric website/forum, when talking about political issues here, you can safely assume we're talking about US 'left' and 'right' beliefs.
If it doesn't specifically mention a different country, this is a safe assumption, and you can converse readily with that knowledge. Easy peasy!
Don't get me wrong, I like a drink every now and then. However, given that choice I wouldn't even hesitate to take the shot. Seriously you'd take 6 months over not drinking? There's other tasty non alcoholic drinks out there, and a million other ways to get a buzz if you feel the need.
No, I can't imagine giving up alcohol for the rest of my life.
1. I live in New Orleans, I'd likely legally be forced to move.
2. I like to cook...I often cook with alcohols (red gravy is NOT the same without some red wine, alcohol releases flavors in tomatoes that don't come out any other way), and despite what they tell you, you NEVER cook out all the alcohol.
3. What other legal way is there to get a good buzz on?
The national sales tax or Fair Tax....take into account the necessities of life (food, etc)...so, that's not going to be a burden on the poorer folks or a deterrent to spend on things they need to live.
But, rich people are NOt ever content just to buy the necessities of life.
They will still continue to buy yachts, Porsches, large homes....even the commodity things they buy are the higher priced versions of things the poorer people buy.
They do spend a LOT more money overall than lessor earners..and it would catch them on those. I'm not talking about the necessities of life, I'm talking about the luxuries, and I don't see any wealthy folks not contiuing to buy nice things. Hell, that's the MAIN reason for being wealthy, so you can buy great $$$ things, no?
They come to like the taste because they associate it with the feelings that come after.
Not necessarily. I tasted my first beer, I think at about age 12 or so, and I liked it the very first sip I had, and I had NO idea what the feelings would be...I didn't have enough to get buzzed, but I sure know I liked the taste of beer!
I still do to this day....hell, nowdays, I brew my own!!
I'd say also, if a virus was used to splice in genetic material to do this..label that.

And once you survive that...don't assume the solution has taken the capsicum oil off the lenses...and put them back in!!
Not, that I've ever done this.....mind, you

I guess you can blame it on beer?
I think the 'happiness meter' would have blown through the roof if they did....
Or, perhaps they did this poll on Ash Wednesday, when everyone here was hungover?

Yeah, but I think we're getting down to basically only about 3x main seed providers commercially out there anymore...that, to me...is dangerously low.
You don't take away all the rights at once...just a little at a time. Once you ban one thing...makes it easier to ban a little more later....etc.
What one generation accepts, the next generation embraces, you know?
ONly if I drive on public roads.
If I were to only drive it on my privately owned land, I would not need to register it.

Does anyone actually believe a single word this president utters?
No, I can't imagine giving up alcohol for the rest of my life.
