"...to football teams siphoning money away from academic programs so that student tuitions must increase to compensate.
This one puzzled me.
Most any college team I know of (SEC ones in my experience) MAKE the universities money by the barrel full.
These teams not only support themselves, but pour money back into the general university system.
I know, and sometimes agree that there is WAY too emphasis on sports on the college level, over academics, but really...the complaint shouldn't be that it costs them any money, it is quite the opposite!
"As I understand it, the recently enacted U.S. national health insurance program, nicknamed Obamacare, requires people to buy health insurance from a private company."
Well, there's a number of states already lined up to try to fight this, as being unconstitutional.
I hope they win...this is just another unprecedented intrusion by the Federal Govt.
Most anytime I go through a drive through ATM, there are at least 2-3 cars in line ahead of me.
Someone coming in the wrong way, would definitely mess things up for everyone else.
"Do you want to be the teacher that has to deal with Junior for 3 years in a row?"
Err...I've never seen or been in a school where there was only ONE teacher per grade?? Why couldn't they move said child that was help back to one of the other teachers?
"I agree with it; governments SHOULD be accessible to all. Note this doesn't cover private web sites. Most private web sites (by "private" I mean non-government) are shooting themselves in the foot if their sites aren't readily accessible to everyone."
Except they mentioned possible exceptions for small businesses...which to me, means they ARE considering forcing these regulations on NON-govt. websites.
"For government sites this is starting to not be true. If the law requires you to do something (e.g. file a tax return) and the only sane way to do it is through a web site (e.g. because it needs some obscure IRS form not at your local library and the IRS is only providing forms via its site), then in fact someone is holding a gun to you to access the site. That's what it means for the law to require something: a gun is being held."
Ah...but as I originally posted, I said I could understand it for websites, etc. for PUBLIC services/sites (state, federal, local) since people DO have to interact with them. Much like I understand the ban on smoking in government buildings where people HAVE to go, or making these places more physically accessible.
My problem comes from Govt. requiring privately owned and operated businesses to adhere to these types of regulations. It should be up to the proprietor as to what they want to do to accommodate as many people as possible...vs their costs/profits.
Again, no one holds a gun to a customers head forcing them to patronize any private establishment.
"That's why cars have the ability to move -- there's no law against coming the opposite direction into a drive-up ATM -- "
However, you will likely have to face a bunch of pissed off people lined up in the proper direction waiting their turn.
Having a handicapped person doesn't give you the right either to just do as you please, and hinder the normal people from going about their business in the normally prescribed manner.
Is this all going to make any difference at all anyway?
I mean, from what I understand, schools just plain do not hold anyone back because they fail...they just continue to promote them on to the next grade regardless of their level of learning the material.
I can understand that they have to make PUBLIC websites and information (state, federal, etc) accessible, but, this almost implies they are going to require that private business (eg the note about small business exceptions) HAVE to put their websites up to some form of handicapped accessible standards?!?!
WTF?
If a business doesn't cater to anyone handicapped (I guess it could happen), or just is ignorant enough to not do so and lose that business, that should be up to them.
No one is holding a gun to the person accessing a site, nor should they be holding a gun to a private business to cater to any specific crowd.
"I don't need a new skillset to drive a different color car... "
You might if it is pink..
:)
I mean, one of the more obvious reasons I'd think no one would want to steal a pink car...is that other thieves would give them grief for stealing a 'gay' car.
"Dunno about your neck of the woods, but my ISP options include:
Comcast
ATT DSL
4G/WiMax from Clear and Sprint
3G from ATT, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile
That's at least 6 options (2 or more flavors of some), not including dialup, nor others getting into the game soon."
Yours is a rare neck of the woods indeed. Guessing where you live, probably there aren't many woods around you?
:)
Seriously, most places I've lived, or places I know people...they have usually only one choice or maybe 2x tops for high speed internet connectivity. Usually 1 cable company, or phone company DSL...and that's it.
Remember, the US Constitution does not enumerate the rights of the citizenry, but, instead it is there to enumerate the LIMITED powers granted to the Federal Government.
Everything else is (supposed to be) granted to the states and the people. So, you should have a natural right to pretty much anything not spelled out by the laws of the lands (mostly on a state and lower level).
"She did fine when she had a script in front of her, but every time she was interviewed without pre-screened questions, she looked like a deer in the headlights."
Well, to be fair, we've also seen how well someone like Biden does when allowed to speak unbridled.
And any time Obama doesn't have his teleprompters, he gets that stuttering and deer in the headlights thing going too...
"Have to close the shades all the time, and if it's hot in the house the shades block the fan from blowing cool air in from outside."
Err...How does it get hot IN the house...if it is cool outside? That doesn't make sense to me? My house gets hot OUTSIDE, and I therefore turn on the AC.
Being that this is New Orleans where I live...the air conditioner comes on about mid April, and doesn't shut off till about mid Nov.
"The biggest offender is SouthWestAirlines (SWA). TWA used to be called The Worst Airline, but SWA has them beat by a mile. Between TSA and SWA I stopped flying. I cann't afford to have TSA destroy my bags and laptops and I won't pay money to be insulted by SWA staff"
Strange, I have found the direct opposite. I LOVE Southwest...they have reasonable prices, they are on time most of the time, I find the staff to always be pleasant and helpful. Their 'rewards' system is pretty nice too....easy to quickly gather enough points to get free flights.
Ok, then why do they keep incessantly advertising product that everyone knows about?
Coca Cola? McDonald's?
It isn't like these aren't already known world wide. Sure, I guess new generations come out...but surely you don't need to advertise them THAT often, that is, if the main reason like you argue, is to inform people of products they might not know about?
"If tomorrow Dell came out with a new line of computers that prevented you from putting your Linux distribution of choice on it by zeroing out the bios and the bootloader so it was rendered unbootable the fury would be cataclysmic. Even though 99 percent of the people who buy computers don't change the operating system."
Ssssshhhhhhh!!!
Don't give them any new ideas!! I'm sure there's lots of organizations out there that would lobby for support for this...backed up by legislation!!
This one puzzled me.

Why can't these guys work from 'home'...home being somewhere other than NYC.
Personally, I'm thinking an internet connection somewhere in the Caribbean with a beach, a broad and a rum drink within reach.
That kind of money would still do good down there, and you'd not have to put up with the rude people up there in NYC.
I can think of ONE other thing you achieve.
Having fun!!
From what I can tell...I'll be long gone and dead by the time it is a catastrophic problem. I won't be around to worry about it.
So, I might as well enjoy my gasoline powered toys!! (motorcycles, and high powered sports cars).
Well, there's a number of states already lined up to try to fight this, as being unconstitutional.
I hope they win...this is just another unprecedented intrusion by the Federal Govt.

Can't hurt Junior's self esteem you know...
WTF?

I dunno.
It is too bad he used up the "Al Franken Decade" way back when, when he was a youngster on SNL.
I'll bet he could have gotten a LOT more done if he'd waited on that till now...
Well, to be fair, we've also seen how well someone like Biden does when allowed to speak unbridled.
And any time Obama doesn't have his teleprompters, he gets that stuttering and deer in the headlights thing going too...
Yep..and now we have a president who is smart enough to go out of his way to openly deceive us.
The vast majority does look better with it on (of course applied correctly)...IMHO.
Err...How does it get hot IN the house...if it is cool outside? That doesn't make sense to me? My house gets hot OUTSIDE, and I therefore turn on the AC.

I thought that only applied to women....?
I've seen a couple of references to this "/b/"....what is this?
Strange, I have found the direct opposite. I LOVE Southwest...they have reasonable prices, they are on time most of the time, I find the staff to always be pleasant and helpful. Their 'rewards' system is pretty nice too....easy to quickly gather enough points to get free flights.
