Occam's razor, and it basically said you should not multiply entities beyond neccessity. Basically, an argument used in pattern recognition and data mining to prefer the simplest model that explains the data (and in science and engineering too.

  2. Re:XML on Programs for Reading Text Files? · · Score: 1

I understand that you are ironic, but how is structuring the text going to make it much easier to read? Clearly the poster wants something that enhances the readability of text mass. Most texts, like novels, do not have very much of a structure in them.

  3. Those crazy IP property employment agreements on Reason on IP Protection and Creativity · · Score: 1

Now THAT is something that should be illegal right away. I really hate those agreements, it's just a way to be able to cash in on your employee if s/he happens to ever invent something smart.

I think California state law has this one right (or at least better): if you work on something on your own time and with your own equipment then how the hell can it ever be your employers property. (Possible exception: obvious derivate of work related research). Slavery is supposed to be illegal these days.

The problem with these agreements are probably only getting worse. I can see many employers trying to push stuff like this now when the job market is much more competitive.

  4. The effect might be the exact opposite on Sony: Case of Right vs Left Hand · · Score: 1

Consider this: Not all people are talented/motivated enough to create all kinds of content. Now some people might consider releasing their song etc for free just to entertain people but what about those who don't? They are probably going to figure out a way to illegally have secret societys that only the selected ones are invited too (cash). There this valueable content will be provided, while the common marked is flooded with crap. Also, a lot of potential great content might never be produced since without copyright, creating content equals no money whatsoever. Given that we are not living in a socialistic/communist society very little time-consuming quality content may see the light of day. Not saying it's gonna be that way, just a thought. Also, personally I dislike the thought of forcing people to give away their creations for free. Isn't that a sign of a truly totalitarian state? Pardon the English, not my native language.

True, I believe you have a point. It's probably peoples' lazyness that has caused this effect, that and my suspicion that there are far more people interested in music than in computer games. I may be wrong there though.

  6. Actually... on Effective Java · · Score: 1

A portable text editor w/ standard features would probably only need 200 lines or so since most of the functionality is provieded from the API, the power of OOP.

    General open source NLP tools:

If you're looking for speech software there isn't that much good software as open source, since just about every aspect of modern speech processing is patented.

A very interesting scenario indeed. There are actually a lot of research going on in this area, both from the UI perspective and from the engineering perspective (performance, security, etc). Ubiqutous computing seems to gain some fuel after the dotcom blowout. I think this could be the beginning of really interesting user interaction in the home environement.
