I think you need a motherboard with a motherboard chipset "and" a BIOS of some sort.
Phil Shiller has stated that OS X will only run on Apple Branded hardware.
To justify purchasing a mac, I would assume that they will provide premium GFX cards, premium soundcards and "full" compatibility and an advanced BIOS with "extra" features and I would assume and expanded power management system.
The CPU is only a small part of any hardware architecture.
Even if you could hack it to boot your frankenPC, where would you get the drivers from?
Where did all these noobs come from and why are they posting on slashdot?
If the vendor decides to do that then they are screwing themselves out of potential sales.
It is in their best interest given that Intel macs are at least a year away "and" Apple is committed to releasing "future" PPC based macs this year and in 2006.
From the keynote, note, both Adobe and MSFT are committed to delivering universal binary versions of their products.
It is in their best interest to maximize their potential marketshare with minimal efforts.
You mean like using Rosetta to run G3 compatible binaries out of the box?
Or running programs compiled in the new Universal Binary Format?
Linux is great as a server and if you want Linux to be competitive on the desktop, you should be taking notes on what Apple does and supporting the LSB.
RTFA. The Universal Binary will work on "both" platforms and the Rosetta emulation will allow for PPC software to run on Intel as long as it does not require Altivec.
"That's nice, but I'm only talking about those things that are necessary to support OpenDarwin and thus OS X.
And since Mac OS X and OpenDarwin run on systems without Open Firmware, the absence of Open Firmware would not prevent Mac OS X from booting up on a partly-OpenDarwin kernel."
That's nice. OpenDarwin is a testbed for technologies, not a shipping commercial OS.
Laptop users need working power management support. Perhaps that is why Linux is not popular with laptop owners.
Apple users expect consistent behaviour of their macs which include Firewire booting and Scheduled power ups. The current BIOS and ACPI do not support those features so a basic/primitive PC would not cut it.
You are forgetting Open firmware which allow us to boot off firewire devices and the Power management subsystem which allow us to "schedule" power on and power off from within the OS.
Those two low level systems make ACPI and Bios look prehistoric by comparison.
As for the rest of your comment, it's not worth commenting on.
Blogging about it is stupid even if I believe his story in the first place. Maybe they are expanding their Xserve line? Does the Xserve raid use ACPI and BIOS with the Xscale processor?
He was not just a loner. He could not properly dress himself. That is why he had many identical outfits. It is also said that he could not tie his own shoes.
I agree with you wholeheartedly. I think these coffee shops should remove "free" WiFi access altogether. There is no need to be "constantly" connected.
I'm sure there are plenty of "for pay" hotspots to serve the needs of the business traveller.
I have to say I really hate those blackberries (a.k.a. Crackberries). To me it is extremely rude for anyone to use one of those devices at a restaurant.
MS Office for Mac of course. It's not the same codebase as Office for windows, it is written by the Mac Business Unit programmers and often provide features that do not appear in the windows version until the next version or appear as a separate app.
One example of the latter would be One Note whose functionality is integrated into the mac version of Word in Office 2004.
Some of the transparency/layer effects found in the Mac version will not appear on windows until the Longhorn version of Office.
I think the issue is that most cheap X86 box vendors try to bundle cheap/substandard ram with the system.
So the invading hordes of barbarians which brought down the Roman Empire had nothing to do with lost records? I did not realize those barbarians were christians. Do tell?
Are you saying all the ancient works we have today preserved themselves?
Do you know that "The Da Vinci Code" is a work of fiction?
Since you have no idea, why did you feel the need to post here?
*sarcasm*
Oh I'm sure the marauding barbarian hordes which brought down the western roman empire causing a total collapse of society had nothing to do it it.
*sarcasm*
Nice troll. It was the church that preserved all the ancient texts we have today concerning Ancient Rome and Greece. Really, if your conspiracy theory had any merit, we would not know anything about this Archimedes fellow or his other works.
Look around you, most democracies today are loosely modeled on the Roman and Greek experiments with democracy.
I do not hate you because I know that you attack out of ignorance. Humans instinctively fear the unknown and attack what they fear.
If you had bothered to RTFA, you would have known this was patently false. It is not a general purpose operating system. You cannot run third-party software on it. It is intended to be a shell for thin client computing in an enterprise environment.

This is now. They are switching because of the "future".
Is everyone who need to get their "work" done going to wait a year?
Apple will "begin" the transition in mid 2006 so there will be plenty of G5's to go around for some time.
Try Google next time.

Unlike us "fans", businesses only care about profits. If it is profitable to continue support for OS X, then they will do it.

I'm not talking about binaries, although that would be useful too but it will not even search text source files.

Finally, some sanity. I cannot believe that the WSJ and CNET have degenerated to "NY Post" style journalism.
If you purchase your MSDN through a Volume/Select license agreement, you receive a Volume key and Corporate CD as well as the Retail versions.
Having said that, I miss the stability of 2000Pro, not to mention that search actually "worked" in Win2k.
That was an excellent piece of dry humour.

What is so great about it and is it available in Canada or outside of North America for that matter?
I would not want to pay extra for a feature on an iPod if it is useless when I travel to europe.

It's the software dummy. Porting the OS will not make the software run.
What are you going to do with it? Play with the dock? Use Safari?
Jcr is or was an Apple employee and he said it's not going to happen.
Wow you are falling for a hoax by none other than Paul Thurrott. He claims to be the one that broke the story being reported on the WSJ.
