I agree with you completely on the idea of punishing people for their crimes and not thoughts. However, when their inner racist feelings leak out and they do something like that, an extra step must be taken.
These two punks needed to learn that it is even more wrong to vandalize a memorial like one to Martin Luther King because of what the man stood for for the black people of our country.
But what if someone vandalizes a Microsoft billboard because they hate monopolistic corporations, and then they get a felony for having the wrong motives when they did the crime? If everyone doesn't have freedom of thought, then none of us do.
While your example sucks, I get what you are attempting to say. Had the people of Microsoft been punished and held down by people of our country then yes, I would say the preps in this case should be held on higher charges. But, because MS has not been, you can't quite compare your example to the Pennsylvania case.
In a mild attempt to get back on topic, I think it will be a long time before we see any sort of thing like public brain scanning. It would take some serious advances (both in actual brain scans and in the society in which we live) for something like this to happen.
While I see the logic in that, I have to disagree. Even though I may have a better system without any sort of firewall at home, I still need to use the computers at my school from time to time. Be it because of an in class assignment or just some free time to spend a bit more time studying, I do use them often enough that it'd matter and I doubt I'm alone.
The other fact is that no where near enough people have a decent speed network or even a computer at home to do full research for class. Unless this domain gets heavy usage, I don't see it helping anyone.
And god does it feel good. I just mooch off a friend's page and all is well. Only real problem is the extended url (2 folders deep) and lack of 'large' space but then again, I barely use it for anything important.
Even so, the real problem is that many schools are just going to block all sites but *.kids.us because, quite frankly, they're too lazy to actually setup a good firewall. The fact of the matter is and will be that good sites do exists out there and not every site is linked to a porn popup or a banner. All this does is allow the public education system to get a bit more lazy.
It's not quite the right idea but it certainly is a step in the right direction. That I completely agree with.

Probably a lot. However, it won't affect you for another 2 billion years so...

Yay, just one more reason for me to not use my school computers as I'm sure within a month they'll be restricting to this and this only. Joy++
