P.S. The story put the lack of love spin on the numbers. The numbers did not.
Per Neilson Android has 9% market share, IPhone has 28%. This says only 77% of Iphoners are going to keep their phones and 20% of the entire market (including iphoners) are going to buy an Android.
That means if these numbers are correct Android will soon have a greater marketshare than the IPhone.
But that was before the front page CNN article telling everyone the IPhone rocks and Android sux0rs.
"Thus, I'd say that surveying how many are likely to get Google-branded phones is a pretty reasonable indicator of how well Android is doing in the marketplace. "
Not when your surveyors are only calling people with actual google branded phones from lists provided by the carriers like these guys.
I haven't had an IPhone, AT&T offered me one for $15 but I declined. I didn't have a smartphone but I'm not the sort who is usually a light data user and AT&T dropped their unlimited plan. Also they offer no insurance on the IPhone. Also they can't waive upgrade and early termination fees on the IPhone under even extenuating circumstance.
But anyway, I've found the android pretty easy and pleasant to use. To see any Linux you actually have to get a third party utility to open a shell.
The only complaint I have is the App store. There is a big delay after I select something before it downloads and then it usually downloads slowly even when using the phone on wifi.
What is up with that? The typical app is smaller than a multimedia laden webpage, since when does google have no bandwidth?
Simple, the article is written by an Apple fanboi who is trying to find some way to skew things in Apple's favor.
Apple has 28% of the smartphone market, Android has 9%. 20% of ALL smartphone users say they are going to buy Android for their next phone. In other words, even if 100% of iPhone owners were saying they'd buy another IPhone the numbers indicate Android will soon overtake the IPhone in marketshare.
But they don't, only 77% say they intend to stick with the IPhone, indicating that while android should rise to 29% apple will drop from 28%.
"Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly said that 20% of Android customers say they'll buy another Android phone. The survey actually revealed that 20% of all smartphone customers say they'll buy an Android phone.' The Yankee Group has further sought to clarify the situation by saying that the 20% are people who explicitly said they would buy a 'Google-branded' phone"
Now I have to read TFA. Your reading sounds the same as the uncorrected story... which would support my assertion that the damage is already done.;)
That's 77% of apple users, not 77% of the market. That was 20% of the market buying androids (or 'google brand phone') so these numbers do indicate an increase in android market share.
These days I work for a network security monitoring company. We have only fortune 500 customers and a number of large state organizations.
All I can say is ROFL. That made my day, really, it did it made my day.
State is even worse than corporate and corporate is bad enough. They have so many ridiculous security policies mandated while leaving gaping holes the size of Texas open. It's all about keeping the illusion of security really.
We have live security staff monitoring their systems and we do it. We monitor and in some cases manage firewalls and have IDS/IDP systems in place and we monitor those as well. Additionally, we sell security and some enterprise grade network gear.
So here is how it goes. An IDS at undisclosed location flags a SQL attack sequence in the form on a major website. We get the alert, determine a complex SQL sequence in network traffic is pretty distinct and not usually a false positive.
So I put down my putting iron and run to the phone to notify the customer during the 15 minute SLA.
Joe "This is Joe, help desk, may I have your name?"
Me "Hey Joe, this is lord vader at company x. We have detected an attack in your network stream. Our automated systems detected and blocked this attack but we highly recommend having the appropriate admins check your web/SQL servers and firewall logs for any suspicious activity."
Joe "I'm not really sure what all that means but I'll submit a ticket."
24 hours later I get a notification that Joe closed his ticket, there are no updates from any admins.
It's a joke, most companies think that having 'enterprise' AV means they don't have viruses/malware and having IDS means they are safe from network attack. They think having overzealous security policy means they are secure.
The reality is no automated system replaces attentive personal and any security policy that interferes with day to day business will be bypassed in some fashion or worked around at any opportunity.
Another example from back when I did service work. We had a bank call us. They were just inspected and the security inspector told them they had to have a firewall with intrusion detection. They called us because they had to be in compliance. They basically had NO security and no a single firewall in the shop. They even had remote access setup on systems with modems on the banking network!
So we prepare a proposal that would get them a solid firewall and an intrusion detection system and lock down the glaring security holes.
They turn us down. Instead they bought one copy of Norton Internet Security and installed it on a system. Technically, they had a firewall that lists intrusion detection as a feature now and this brought them into compliance.
Yes it will. Hackers/Hacking organizations have limited resources just like companies do. They spend their time finding and educating themselves on exploits in the most popular commercially available products because it yields the most bang for the buck.
In fact, many of these attacks begin with a scan to seek out vulnerable software.
AT&T and Apple couldn't have bought better advertising.
Even the original statement, 20% of android users are going to get a new phone vs 77% of apple users being happy was biased reporting. If reported in an unbiased manner that would be 80% happy android users vs 77% Apple or 20% unhappy vs 23%, etc. Both would be the positive or the negative.
Note: As a mildly respected member of the Slashdot community I didn't RTFA just TFS so the article may not have been biased at all.
It's amazing how strong the correlation is. Phrased that way people might be thrown off because it sounds sexist but it isn't literally about having a cock and balls. It's about having been taught an old fashioned ethic that is passed from father to son and showing you listened and learned with every handshake.
I wouldn't base major decisions entirely around a handshake but its a factor.
I've noticed a similar correlation between a rural and/or midwestern upbringing and certain aspects of work ethic. At least in the US.
"So wrong - there are loads of people who don't like unnecessary bodily contact with other men, and thus are automatically reluctant."
I've never heard of handshaking falling into the realm of homophobia but that would fall into the don't give a shit category. If you care about what you are doing then your mind is on the business about the begin or just concluded not the handshake.
"But more to the point, my own observations (anecdotal! I know) have been that most people just shake hands the same way all the time, basically the way they were sort of taught to as kids."
I generally agree. But that doesn't mean it isn't a useful indicator. Just about every other aspect of a person's behavior is the result of their upbringing as well. Nor does it negate the commonly accepted body language indicators I already mentioned.
"A wet handshake indicates that someone perspires at a lower temperature than others."
Sure, but you perspire other places before your hands. Exceptions would be if you are sitting on them, wearing gloves, or are nervous. The last one is why skin conductivity is used to assess stress on polygraph exams.
There are exceptions to all body language interpretations which is why I said it is of limited importance. That doesn't mean the information is completely useless. Understanding body language can be the difference between walking away from a negotiation or encounter with what and settling for less.
How do you know when it's a good time to approach the boss about issue x? How do you know when to press for a raise? If he maintains a professional demeanor how do you know if the boss is making decisions you don't like or if he simply doesn't like you?
Body language is a part of how I decide these things. I don't follow the cult of body language and obey the magic sweaty palm but I consider body languages. I shake my bosses hand every time I encounter him and a sweaty palm can mean the difference between accepting his proposal or pushing for something more advantageous.
Apparently, you see I meant "you shouldn't read too much into it" and you apparently read "it means absolutely nothing."
I appreciate your honestly in admitting your mistake though. It suggests character so I might friend you but I'm not going to read too much into it and offer you my daughter.
Then you must not be doing it well. If it's taking a long time to please her then you just aren't doing it right.
If its hot, passionate, and she feels properly taken then you won't have to make any special efforts and hold out. She'll finish as fast or faster than you will.
"The embedded platforms you mentioned run opengl ES, which is not the same thing."
It is now. You need to work on reading comprehension.
"I was really making a comparison about UI design, not saying that you actually see Linux on Android."
That makes even less sense. Linux has the most streamlined desktop GUI these days. MacOS is a close second runner up though.
Apple fans are using up all their mod points tonight
Could have been the same fanboi who modded down this post.
? My HTC Hero came from sprint with OS Version 2.2 preloaded.
I also believe the Evo has 2.2

Why not, we call all restaurants Taco Bell... Wait, that hasn't happened yet.
Nothing to see here citizen, move along.
Not a troll, these are relevant facts and on topic with regard to the story.
A lot of heavy handed Apple modding in the comments on this one. Looks like some people weren't happy to lose their rosy picture.

That is a meaningless statement without actually making such an admission.

I actually appreciate you wiping sweaty hands before a handshake. The reason to not let me see it is that you've revealed that you are nervous to me.
Maybe that is good, maybe it is bad, depends on the circumstance.
