That only makes sense until you realize that most who want to upgrade video in the first place are gamers. As a gamer you upgrade video far more often than cpu/board.
Theft is a serious crime also. Because the worst thieves exploit people for billions does that mean we should stop punishing retail theft?
"How about try getting some perspective. I hate spam as much as the next person. And I have sent f**koff emails to people who have sent me a single spam. But a serious crime? A murder is a serious crime. "
Even if he does work you can only garnish child support now. He could make $200,000/year and still not pay a dime. We don't have debtors prisons here and we never should for obvious reasons.
The punishment was a symbolic gesture. Prison time would have had a real impact.
Agreed, how a day in a federal pen for every email sent. Of course there would be still be awards for damages on top of that and $10 per email sounds fair.
1 spam email should be considered a serious crime. Spammers are now commonly sending millions but that should not mean that we treat cases of individual unsolicited mail less seriously.
Well if we can multiply existing cells there is no further need to destroy anymore embryos to harvest more cells.
I seriously doubt anyone would claim the cells themselves are somehow more sacred if taken from an embryo than a human. The debate is whether it is ethical to destroy embryos to harvest said cells. As long as we can reproduce the cells already harvested destroying embryos could be outlawed from this point forward and stem cell research could continue unhindered.
After all, how is a stem cell in itself anymore sacred than a skin cell or any other individual cell? Claiming an embryo is life is one thing, claiming that individual cells taken from an embryo have souls is even more of a stretch.
"Regardless, the "discovery" reported doesn't impact the moral or ethical discussion, it comes into play after the intitial stem cells are taken (or created, in the case of embryonic ones)."
I have no doubt that at the moment of this discovery there are some embryonic stem cells already harvested somewhere. But if I can now multiply them eternally in a glass dish without risk of contamination and without needing anymore embryo's then that essentially ends the debate, right?
After all, I can always take a cell from this dish and use it to start another... and another... and so forth until the end of time.
The better question would be why obsessive compulsives who complain spelling mistakes that are perfectly legible are aloud to read the web. If you can not read misspelled words without agitation then simply do not read unedited forums. It is a much better strategy than annoying the rest of us by voicing your agitation.
*sighs* I know. It frustrates me to no end that Operating System is being redefined. It has been changed from the layer of software that operates the hardware and provides the lowest level api for accessing it (kernel, and kernel api); to the layer of software that interacts with the user.
I'd like to see OS versus OS. For linux you count kernel flaws (everything else is user space and can be swapped out with other apps). For windows you count flaws in the software that remains after you remove everything you can through proper channels (uninstall, not simply delete).
"I can name but only a couple of real world applications that are cross platform and particularily useful."
I don't think I could name a half dozen useful applications that are NOT cross platform.
"I seriously question any vendor that tries to support a code base across several platforms. I.E. How would you expect them to make bug fixes, service packs, security patches, for several platforms in a timely mannor at a reasonable price?"
Obviously you are not a programmer. Or you are a windows programmer. In a properly designed application there is little to no platform specific code. Well designed applications are highly modular with whatever platform specific code is present contained in seperate modules.
Virtually all bugs in cross platform applications are in compliant code and a single patch resolves the issue across all platforms. The major exception to this is actually windows. Since windows is not posix compliant and conforms to no industry standards or API's a great deal more platform specific code is needed. Windows security models also require workarounds on the application level (as demonstrated repeatedly in 'Firefox' bugs that were really problems with the windows security model).
The headline would be appropriate use of the language. The assumption that scientific researchers is intended would be incorrect even if common. Look at ancient mythology, simply because the majority of the human race believes in magic men in the sky controling our fate hardly makes it less of a fable.
Actually, the hacker term applies to any geek who excels at learning the component pieces of things in arranging them in a way that causes his will to be done. There are electronics hackers, phone hackers, programming hackers. and security hackers.
Those who learn how security mechanisms work and exploit the way they function to achieve their ends are also hackers. It was never wrong to call security crackers hackers. Script kiddies need not apply, and the term was never exclusive to security crackers in true definition.
I believe you'll find that this is really a stepping stone that leads to more and more work with exoskeletons. Ultimately, light and fully armored exoskeletons akin to what you saw on Starship Troopers is the goal.
Blizzard doesn't need to stop gold farmers. Blizzard needs to keep the appearance of doing so. If blizzard doesn't maintain that appearance then those who start whining because others have more than them (regardless of whether they are hurting for anything themselves) chirp up.
All this does is guarantee another 18,000 game purchases, and that is money in blizzard's pocket.
Everything is legal until a law is passed that makes it illegal. The only reason anyone questions this obvious concept is that the courts have a tendency to decide things are illegal or punishable simply because they feel they should be.
automatic scanning would mean that the scanning occurs automatically, on the fly, in direct response to me plugging in a different monitor or video card. As opposed to me having to manually issue a command. Basically, my grandmother should not need my help to change her monitor.
XML is a text format. Very similar to html. Actually the current web standard is xmlized html called xhtml 1.0 (most are still using the outdated html for the web though).
As I predicted before Bush was elected. In a time of severe economic hardship a Republican is elected. Said president will then start a war that with strengthen the economy. Clinton put us in a recession and Bush pulled us out of it. Tax cuts and increased defense spending both are ways fo bankrupting the government itself and putting those dollars back into the economy.
Ultimately, it does not matter whether republican's or democrats are in office, the same corporations will be in charge either way.
I can't believe I just heard a woman in IT spread a false sexist statement about different rates of MENTAL maturation between the sexes. Females typically begin puberty earlier than males, the difference ends there.

Congratulations. You have been caught in a troll trap. You are the next in my campaign to capture and tag all the grammar trolls on Slashdot.

ok, and lets say he doesn't make the payments and instead sips drinks with umbrellas someplace warm. Then what?

*nods* This will never matter. Only child support can be garnished so nobody can ever actually make him pay this.
It's a big number but it is purely symbolic. They would have collected more if the fine had been $200, I doubt he'll pay that much of this.
That's kind of the point. That is why they call it an economic death penalty, he has to pay for the rest of his life.
