The Government does actually own a small share of Telecom New Zealand. As for private, I was referring to individual share owners, as opposed to corporate owners.
That's because of the Southern Cross Cable which is half owned by - surprise surprise, Telecom NZ (our monopoly ex-government owned telco) and UUNet also has a share (no comment needed here).
This is a company that also limits the bandwidth available to customers through specific ports (think P2P). It doesn't matter that the customer has paid for the connection - they still tell (force?) you to use it as they want.
Prices for data? 128kb/s ADSL with 5GB monthly cap - NZ$65
up to 8Mb/s (usually around 2MB/s) ADSL (home) 500MB per month $49 1GB per month $69
up to 8MB/s (usually around 2MB/s) ADSL (home or business)
600MB - $62
1200MB - $120
1800MB - $176
3000MB - $292
5000MB - $458
10000MB - $888
20000MB - $1800
These are NZ$ (multiply by.6 to get $US equivalent) plus 12.5 % sales tax, and ISP fees, as this is just for the data flowing over Telecom's network.
Uhh, curious as to how taxpayers own a majority share in the company? The governments owns the 'Golden' share on our behalf, but that's it (apart from very minor private shareholdings).
As for the loss to Vodafone - yay for us!!! Management is happy, and the whole company and partners are getting tickets to a Warriors game, t-shirt, etc (and the requisite party - but probably minus the strippers this time...)
Mac people should know better than anyone why the name G5 - it's been complained about for years.
Marketing 101 (aka The Marketing Myth). 5 is a bigger number than 4 - therefore, the G5 MUST be better than the P4. Just like a 3Ghz PC MUST be faster than a 1.8 GHz...
I wonder if data logged from this system could be utilised by the likes of id Software to enhance the realism of their software? Instead of the game makers having to create the 'reality' of fps games, they would be charged with re-creating it.
Either that, or they just network to 12 year olds who could fight for the US from the comfort of the chair at home by remote control. These kids actually have some skill at distinguishing friend from foe, and might reduce the US dependence on expensive missiles.
Amen to that. I get pissed off when apps such as Outlook Web Access etc get pushed as replacements for the full clients. HTTP-based, web browser bound 'apps' such as these annoy the hell out of me, especially in a country such as New Zealand, where broadband (and gigabit LANs) are difficult to get hold of, and expensive when you can. The alternative means of access mean that crap such as OWA are as slow as George Michael is leaving the men's room.....k
Either that or the brits are running low on Green Berets, and have send London Bobbies instead...

Whether you believe in what has started or not, it is now moot. What worries me is the innocent people who will die. My parents were on holiday, about 2 km away from the Pentagon on 9/11 and whilst there are many people who do not like Americans (for one reason or another), the horror they spoke of will be with me forever. Whenever I hear this , my thoughts always go to the innocent, whatever nationality they are. Hopefully this will also remind a few others of the fact that so many people are affected. For all the good one person's thoughts will do, I hope the war will be as swift and as bloodless as possible...k
This is a country where the imcumbent Telco also owns about half of the Southern Cross Cable - the main data connection into the country (oh, and guess who owns another portion...).

And you thought sensorship was our biggest problem - I don't see why are they would sensor us anyway - it's not like we have the means, financially or technically to access much anyway.
And/.ers thought there wasn't a need for ASCII porn.....k
I'm about to get a flogging from the Moderators, but anyway.
How can anyone let this happen? The resolution is to provide software to the retail value of $1.1B, but the cost to the convicted is that of producing the CDs and boxes that accompany the product. I thought the damages were meant to punish the convicted, as much as compensate the victims. A convicted monopolist is allowed to pay the damages by providing more of the software which has been deemed anti-competitive by the very same courts. Apart from vague 'because it's Microsoft' comments, can anyone please enlighten someone from outside the US as to why?

By linking, are they referring to hyperlinks, or any sort of reference to sites outside.kids.us? What if you want to have graphics on your site from another (primary) site on an outside domain? Is all access to domains outside.kids.us going to be blocked? Is this technically possible? What about pop-ups? Will Java also be banned? Who is going to be in charge of the domain, and hence selling it? I'm sure someone like McDonalds, Disney, or Mattel would kindly volunteer...
Sorry, but it just seems like this hasn't been thought through terribly well.
