QuickTime 6.1 Released

ufo8mycow writes "QuickTime 6.1 is available for Mac users via Software Update. Enhancements include the following: MPEG-4 video provides more accurate rate control and improved visual quality; AAC includes new encoder controls and new bit rate options; DV includes significant encode and decode performance improvements; QuickTime Pro users will enjoy enhancements in full screen playback, including newly enabled keyboard shortcuts for movie control, faster entry and exit, and improved playback performance."

    I'd lay pretty good odds that this includes the changes to quicktime to let it work with those new MPEG4 enabled cell phones.

      So when are the iPods going to support it?

      At least the AAC portion of Apple's MPEG4...

      Or do they already? If so, I see no mention of this anywhere.

      This is just what the article said!

      That's like standing up at MacWorld Expo SF and saying "Hey, and there are new PowerBooks out, too!" after Steve is done.

      Maybe you prefer your Software Update at the command line. But wheter you use vi, pico or emacs, its still the same thing.

    Little known fact. Jobs and Apple have made QT one of the top 3 players worldwide when it comes to video enabled cellphones. I'd agree with the statement about MPEG4.

    The topic (tip) of updating from the command line for OS X software updates in not new here, and it's been well received in the past as being helpful.

    I update from the command line when I am remote (like now, when I'm in the office). When I'm at the box, I use the built in panel... :) OK?

    Just trying to be helpful...if it doesn't float your boat, then you, like all, are free to ignore.

    I just redownloaded only to find out it's 6.0.2. Is this only for Macs? I also see no mention of 6.1 on their site.

      As far as I can tell, the standalone installers (at least the Jaguar one) are still 6.0.2

      I guess I have to get out from behind this firewall before I can upgrade...

    This update has broken TruPlaya, a Video Player which uses Quicktime but allows you to play movies fullscreen even if you don't buy/have QuicktimePRO.

    I can still play the movies in TruPlaya, but i can't Pause/Stop/Reverse, etc. them any more :/

      Because i usually don't watch movies on my ibook i'll prefer free (as in beer) software when i wan't to watch them fullscreen (once in a year :)

      Cheap, nothing... I quit buying it after they stopped offerring free upgrades. Got sick of new versions coming out and the movies not being backward-compatible. If you're working on a Windoze box, there's not much point in having it except to watch movie previews, and that ain't worth the $29.

    For what it's worth: iSync 1.0 is also available via Software Update.

    "iSync 1.0 is the first official release after the iSync 1.0 Beta release, and includes scheduled synchronization and improved Palm OS device connectivity and reliability"

    After running SW update and leaving it running overnight, I got up this morning to find the Mac telling me to restart, as expected. Clicked the restart button, then a strange thing happened, it kind of did a strange half shutdown / log-out thing and came back-up within about 30 seconds.
    Now it was very early, so I wasn't too attentive, sorry if it's a little vague :) A quick look look at my uptime confirmed it didn't reboot.
    Anyone else experience this? Am I going mad? The Mac seems to be running fine.

      I noticed this too. This seems to be a change after upgrading to 10.2.3.

      It seems to just drop down to singled user and bounce back up-- apparently a full reboot isn't necessary.

      Hmm, thanks for that... So I click on the "Restart" button and it doesn't. Apple need to rename it to something else...
      Let's see, half a restart == "Start" ??? Oh f**k.

      Installed mine about an hour ago. It rebooted and when it came up again (after the intro apple screen) just a blank screen. I let it sit for 10 minutes than hard rebooted. Back to normal now though

      It was a full reboot for me when I updated this morning - and yes I am using 10.2.3:

    I noticed the update yesterday and installed it. The new fullscreen mode changes are sweet. It switches to and from fullscreen mode much faster now and the Command-1,2,3 keys change the size of the video while you're in fullscreen.. very nice.

    Also the fact that it is part of the autmatic update system. So I am sure apple is expecting a large persentage of OS X systems to be updated with or without Slashdot.

    Here is apples KB document on Quicktime 6.1. It includes what are new features, what's required to update, and how to update (like the last part is hard, but oh well...).

    Note this update is ONLY for Macs and ONLY for Mac OS 10.1.5 or higher. The AppleCare docu contains instructions on how to update for OS 9 but I believe thats part of a template that they forgot to remove.

    If you are anal and a perfectionist and like to annoy support representatives, contact them using this page. Unfortunately, they don't have direct email, probably because of all the Mac haters ;)

    Authoxy. QuickTime 6.1 is only available through Software Update at present (not standalone installer), which will not connect through firewalls since the 10.2 Jaguar upgrade was released. This app allows Software Update to connect through firewalls and download updates. ..k
