  1. patriot? act on Patriot Act to be Expanded · · Score: 1

nationalist act seems more appropriate. how is america not a fascist state now? i mean what aspects of the great experiment are not corrupted to some degree moreso than should be allowed. and please look up the definition of fascism before replying. i still feel like the freedom of speech laws rival most other countries, but i think that might be it ( of course it is an extremely important thing, the one thing that really prevents any all out dislike of america altogether )

  2. im gonna feel stupid but... on CIOs Looking At OSS · · Score: 1

...what the hell does cio stand for. is that the new term for ceo.

ive only been gone from the states for six months (draft dodging on government money ;), but it has been difficult keeping up.

  3. how about... on Forbes on Lessig and Eldred · · Score: 4, Insightful

...disallowing corporations from holding copyrights of anything. reserve copyright for individuals only. that would protect the small time artist, enrich public domain, and do many other things i cant think of right now. it is four in the morning.

  4. Re:AxMan on Great Surplus Stores? · · Score: 2, Informative

got to give props to the axman reference. great store. for those in the twin cities area, take 94 to snelling, exit north and turn west on university ave. axman is on the north side after a few blocks.

  5. no worries on Major League Baseball Releases Webcasting Plans · · Score: 1

the article mentions that folks in the hometown area have the option of watching the blackout games 90 mins after they end. much better than not being able to watch them at. the system isnt perfect (i want all the games broadcast since the twins dont get the exposure they need, and its not free) but its a step forward. im abroad so it will be nice to see some american baseball again...

    ...go twins!

  6. game as art on Can Game Developer Unrest Lead to Revolution? · · Score: 1

if we could get people to think of games as an avenue for artistic expression, then we could have some forward thinking peoples/companies/governments/etc. give out awards (cash or equipment) to independent, non-commercial developers for the creation of these small time games.

this is not a business model, but a way of making games for gamings sake. this way, the independent developers can concentrate on making the game instead of paying the bills.

  7. problem and possible solution on Can Game Developer Unrest Lead to Revolution? · · Score: 5, Interesting

you can make good movies very cheaply, same with music, but it is tough to do the same with videogames. notice how good independent movies dont go crazy with special effects but instead have quality acting and story (or at least some bizarre premise). games need to do the same. big problem is that there are a reasonable amount of people willing to watch a movie even if it is filmed on with a handheld and takes place in someones apartment, as long as the story is worthwhile (clerks, etc.) while most folks buy the next gen console/computer for more power better graphics etc. cheap games dont take advantage of that so it is hard for them to work there way into the market.

now here is an idea that may work. take a selection of independently developed games, have those guys get together, or some interested third party, and release the games as a package. make it like the online music services where you can choose which games you want included in the package. they could then monitor which particular games are chosen the most and do further development with those.

  8. not so bad, even for the open source community on The Internship That Students Drool Over · · Score: 1

while it is easy to jump on the young kids jumping to microsoft even though the company represents what is wrong with american business to so many of us, maybe it aint such a bad thing. consider that as time progresses these kids will rise through the ranks of microsoft corp to a position of power, and hopefully a few of them will retain the ideals of open-source etc. change from within could then occur. it would be even more likely to happen if the idealistic geeks would carpet bomb the shit out of microsoft by applying for these internships, employment in droves. at least one of them, if not more, is bound to make it past the scrutinizing interviews and maintain ones integrity while still reaching a position of power. it would be like a spy movie or something. anyone want to infiltrate the mysterious lair of scorpio. be careful not to become whom you pretend to be.

i would apply, but im a mathematician and dont know much about computers.
