Well here goes.. Apparently the programs didn't include the icons/links to be added to your desktop, or something to that sort. In GNOME and KDE it's fairly easy to add an icon to the desktop/menu to like to a program, just type in the program name and command to run to load it (like netscape to load netscape.. sometimes netscape-communicator.. but I haven't used netscape in a long time so I can't say for sure)

think of it this way.... did you learn windows overnight? If not, and I know you didn't, how did you learn? Apply that same method to Linux. Learn how the system works, learn things you never knew before, just keep at it. Trust me, it's worth it.

  3. Gnome2 and KDE3 on GNOME 2 to Replace CDE As Solaris Default DE · · Score: -1, Offtopic

I never liked KDE much.. Believe me, I've given it enough chances, but eventually I just stopped installing it on my systems due to lack of use. Gnome2 is a great GUI with all the flexibility I need without too much junk loading my systems down. KDE always seems to be slow, bulky, have that nice little integrated file browser/web browser (gag), and among other things, it sucks in general (well, don't take that the wrongs way, it's a well built program and I am not putting down the effort the put into it, it's just not for me). So, this step for gnome2 is a great thing (for me at least). And I am out of comments for now 'cause my mind went blank.

you'd be very surprised.... I am running a couple of Gentoo systems and they are simply GREAT. The Performance increase is loads higher than any other distro that I have used (And I've used quite a few of them), and is now my preferred linux distro. The packaging system is also great, and I've never had a problem with kernel stability (been running half a year now without a single problem).

Gentoo gives you the choice during install to use a vanilla or a patched kernel. That's the difference from RedHat. In fact, Gentoo is also optimized specifically for your architecture (ALL the software, not just the kernel) while RedHat has a ton of software to run on any x86 machine. Gentoo in my experience has been much faster.

My god... I thought I was the only one that played Natural Selection.... there's like 5 servers with people on it at any point in time......

Good game though, would be great is it got bigger.. was thinking about setting up a server for it.

Anyways, that's off topic. I am a Sales Person who designs open source software as a hobby (and for business after college is over). I sell far more AMD CPUs than Intel, and it's not because I am 'biased'. It's because people recognize the value in such a good processor for such a low price. They probably could knock their prices up a buck or so and make quite a bit more money.

The whole "cheap imitation" theory is false as well. there are a few downfalls to AMD's current lineup, but they are not too severe. These downfalls are mainly: Heating (HOT!) which is fixed with a good cooling system (not necessarily expensive), 256KB L2 Cache, Dual Pumped Bus.
The heating should be self explanatory.
The L2 Cache is being upped to 512KB to match Intel with the new Barton processors
With the new 333FSB processors that are 166core dual pumped, it matches up quite well with Intel's 533FSB which is 133 quad pumped.

And you save a lot of cash too..... so why not? Check out the benchmarks on tomshardware.com too. It shows you the actual ratings between the two processors, however be warned that tomshardware is not completely unbiased (advertising, money$$$$$) but is still an excellent resource.

and also if you take a look at the review on P4's HT technology, it's not too big of a deal (in some aspects, it lagged behind, but in multitasking it did do a bit of good).

Well.. I hope that didn't sound like a sales pitch, hehe...

We are already losing enough freedom of speech. If I say something that could even remotely come off as a form of "sexual harassment", I can be sued. In fact, even if they didn't get that impression, they could say that I was sitting or standing in such a manner that was "seductive and therefore harassing".

So much for freedom of speech. Way to go for any movement that takes away our speech.

If I think you're sexy, and I say it, then I'm taking a risk.Best scenario is that it comes off into a conversation about how sexy I am, worst case is that I get my pants sued off, and am doomed into walking the streets as a hobo, while she gets to look at all the pr0n on my computer.

BTW, I did my best to not be offensive.... I am terribly sorry if I offended anyone out there, and no, this is NOT a form of sexual harassment.

George Carlin has to be the ultimate comedian of last century, and still into this century. And what you have said makes a lot of sense as well. What makes most jokes is the fact that there's a receiving end.. but people tend to get touchy when the receiving end is them. I crack jokes about my friends all the time.. and they crack jokes about me. Usually I'm referred to as the smart one among my friends, which leaves tons of leverage for people to crack some pretty nasty jokes. (I don't think phil can jack off without a computer nearby! LMAO). But I don't argue with them and tell them how horribly offensive it is, instead I laugh and crack a joke right back at them. Works like a charm.

Well, to the origin of this whole arguement, it's A.L.I.C.E. that should be taking the offense. ALICE: So why don't you download me? hehehe.. well enough of that. Basically, I'm all male (wow really? YES! lol...) and I have no reason to take offense to any jokes that can be made about men. When I hear "All men are a**holes!" I don't think twice about it. Want to know why? Because I don't apply to stereotypes, I am my own person. I try to be respective to other people whether male or female. I've heard plenty of jokes about men thinking about nothing but sex, beer, and the football game. The list of jokes can go on, but seeing as to how I rarely drink and I hate sports (although sex isn't on that cross-out list) then I just go about my day and if that person has that prejudice against me... it's there OWN damn fault. Basically what I'm getting at is that jokes were never meant to be taken personally.... so therefore DON'T TAKE THEM THAT WAY. People that believe they're true are usually effected by a mental disorder. The same disorder that makes people think it's okay to kill because they're allowed to kill people in video games (inability to separate fantasy from reality).
