Are you really sure about this? I've played Katamari Damacy and a small little ball starting at less than 1 cm, bumps into random things thus growing in size. Eventually, the ball is able to roll over and absorb the earth, other planets, stars and other galaxies and (presumably black holes). What's left after I don't know - it was an computer-based physics simulation played on my television screen.
I can't believe in 'prior art' clauses, especially on/. there isn't thought to references made to Sci-Fi movies. There's plenty of 1 or 2 finger simulated-touch-screens I'm sure in the likes of Star Wars, Star Trek, Tron, The Matrix, etc. that might fit the characteristics of the Apple patent.
I propose, to embarass the US PTO and make a useful business communication device, a patent for mobile screen communication device that can be controlled with either: my tongue, nose, toes or elbows. Forked-tongue needs some software patents for the algorithm. You're welcome to design for other appendages.:)
From the headline: "...detecting one or more finger contacts with the touch screen display, applying one or more heuristics to the one or more finger contacts to determine a command for the device..."
Darn it! All the touch screen interfaces I've seen only allow one or two fingers or then hand to control the interface. I was thinking of octupling productivity!
I think we should start a lawsuit which should be settled just as the machine is turned on. Just as the end of the planet occurs, our bank accounts will grow. Hey, its a recession, we all need the money!!
The NSA dragnet collect information or collect any info(?) ('spy') on its own citizens for the purposes of intelligence gathering. Its against Constitutional rights. Its against the policies and objectives of the NSA (must be for FOREIGN targets only). OK.
The FBI probably can't collect information in a similar fashion (tapping all telephones, internet). It must obtain a warrant and must target a specific individual. Ok.
Canada has an intelligence agency (CSIS). As well the US is in 'good' relations with the French, British, Autralians, etc.
It seems -THE loophole- is that any other another government could collect information on every US citizen's Internet access (destined in or outside the US) and then share that information with the US - presumably the FBI or Secret Service etc since it would fall well within their jurisdiction. As long as the information isn't being collected domestically.
Interesting point. I'd think that the 'lets try them as adults' line is used when a heinous or senseless act is committed for which rehabilitation is unlikely. I chose these words because it fits in well with Child Pornography.
Violent assault, murder, DUI, hit and run, robbery or I suppose a large enough fraud/stealing of monies by a 13+ yr old may pressure the State to pursue an adult trial. Sensless, non-victimless act which rehab (consider street races for hit-run) was committed. In many of these types of cases (ok 13 yr old unlikely), the 15+ yr olds are probably more likely to be tried as adults.
I suppose in this case unlikely. But, if a teenage boy(s) took the picture, it would be a different story. It depends on how the parents of the girl blame the incident: the daughter for taking the pics or the boys for keeping/looking at it.
Their timing of the announcement is more than a little coincidental and at the least does nothing to help with their public image. Their main concern is that they don't want to lose their customers over this. By not revealing the names of the retailers involved, there won't be any public backlash from customers.
Ok, so this *one* transaction company 100 million transactions/month. There are several other competing companies. This incident is the result of a data breach without accounting for daily fraudulent attempts/successes (for which we don't know the numbers). We also don't know how much money was lost. We need a better system.
When someone always decides to reinvent the whole fucking wheel, its always wasteful. I care for mother earth - the only thing I really need to upgrade is a higher efficiency PSU. Requiring a new computer for an OS is good for the economy. Landfills are getting more and more computer and related equipment which was perfectly functional but wasn't good enough for a new commercial OS. Productivity software and and the Internet work just fine for most people until a new OS shows up.
My current system has 1 GB of RAM and a 2.4 GHz CPU which does more than enough for the work I need. Windows 7 add absolutely no value to me and does not help me more productive and organized. The marketing dept. at MS loves that line. But they can never prove it "productive and organized".Where's a better Windows Explorer? Its been a total rehash since Windows 95 days, but just some newer icons each time. Since MS likes Ctrl + C, Ctrl+ V, just give me OS X Finder in Windows already. Guess that comes with the next OS.
I try and shy away from online-Banking as much as I can. Never mind separate browser. I use a Live Linux DVD and load up my bank site from there. When I do this its boot, bank website, print if necessary, shutdown and back to Windows.
The problem then becomes what to do with the records to prevent deletion. You could have a branch of gov't that deals specifically with protecting the White House's data other than IT people. The problem is always going to be its for the Office of the President so 1) there's always going to be political interference in the decision making; 2) the data can be highly personal or classified; 3) the President is probably going to have a say or veto if in his/her best interests to get person of their choosing.
I'd hate to see e-mails go missing. Paper files are always better. But there's always going to be doubt in any system. People can used non-issued computers to communicate and paper can go missing easily with no proof it was ever written.
If 100,000 e-mails are missing, surely the date and time stamps + sender and receiver are pieces of information that should be kept on file in the archives. It would reveal some details about the discussion. Afterall, since they have a good idea of the precise number of e-mails missing, they should have logs to back up this evidence. If not, perhaps even more e-mails are missing.
I've used Windows since 3.0 and used OS X for about 4 years. I just tried the Win 7 last night for about 15 minutes and reformatted the drive after.
The 3.1 interface sucks to 'today's standards' but its much more purposeful than I've found Vista or 7. I'll admit OS X has a number of faults with the Finder but 1) its way better than Vista 2) I'm more productive working with files 3) I implemented a GTD system on my Mac which seems to work much better than I've been able to setup with Windows.
At the least, MS needs to make their GUI more customizable - more so than changing border colors and/or having to use 3rd party apps to do so. You can't please everyone, true. But perhaps in their user-testing sessions they should have some people say "This doesn't work" here's some options you should include...... ". At the least, I'd like to see some sort of plug-in system for Explorer aka the Firefox Plug-in system. That might get the ball rolling!
I'd agree. The top 5 companies are very expensive to run. They have lots of employees, advertisers to pay, lots of computers to run. Amazon, Apple, IBM and MS all sell items in boxes. Paper is expensive so that will eat into their bottom line and they may have to lay off employees or reduce sales to lower the effect of box prices. Apple's logo is of an apple. Since Apples are biodegradable it says a lot about the company's own outlook. Apple has best laptop sales, IBM sold it laptop division. Bad outlook for IBM.
I disagree with Google. They have an advantage over #2 through 4: apparel sales. T-Shirts and other similar items can better ride the economic downturn, since they have a predictable wear-out rate and are easily serviceable at low cost to the customer. These sales, which will probably amount to $500.00 year-on-year, rising 1% from previous, will far exceed analysts' expectations and continue an upward trend relative to the rest of the market.
Otherwise, good list. Just give some more thought to Google next time!;)
I'm not a biologist or a chemist but I'll throw this idea in the open. I've read about Extremophiles - organisims that are natually able to live and grow in generally unfavorable conditions for organisms. This can include extreme heat, cold or toxic environments. So some are being created as a way to metabolise certain wastes such as radiactive ones through genetic engineering - or finding one that already does.
It would seem to me that if there's say 20 different types of toxic chemicals in the slag, one could create 20 of these organisms with a metabolic pathway to reduce the slag. I don't know what would be left (considering my lack of credentials) but it might be better than what we have right now.
True, but not if you use an older system. I have a desktop with 1 GB ram on it. I didn't want to throw out old hardware and don't need extra 'power' for websurfing. Then again, newer systems are probably more energy efficient.
I don't know how much truth there is with this (I'm clearly not an HP employeer - or former).
An interview with Fiorina I read says that (paraphrasing) she made a lot of cuts to HP, cuts that were needed to make the company profitable again. So at the time she was fired, which was 3 or 4 years of her tenure I think, was about the same time the cuts starting increasing the profit margins - expenses vs revenues type of thing (not an accountant either!).
It wouldn't be a far stretch of the imagination that the FBI would highly consider those that have applied to Intelligence organizations but didn't make it. Doesn't mean they are less talented at their jobs. There's all kinds of reasons to choose the FBI over some of the others - there's always +/- trade-offs.
True. But I think influence would have some effect on the decision making process of ISPs and content providers alike wether from the company itself or the executive with their connections. I'm hoping it won't come down to a Coca-Cola internet as another poster noted, but based on the volume of media Apple is selling in iTunes store, it wouldn't surprise me if they at least asked for some $$$$ or QoS preference. Or vise versa - that is the ISPs or Tier backbone providers asking Apple for $$$$$ since iTunes store surely produces a lot of (legal) traffic.
Around '95 or '96 the large ISP I was connected to had proxied content of commonly downloaded software, patches, games, etc. in agreement with content holders. I don't know that such servers would be economically feasible given the alternate of a customer just downloading it elsewhere. Might help though.
There's probably some way to identify that the evidence - DNA or Blood - was not there at the time of the murder if that's what you're implying. That I don't know the answer to. Corroborating evidence comes, motive, opportunity, record, etc.
The one problem I can see is the vigilante cop (think Batman, Dirty Harry or Steven Segal). If they're so gung ho about taking down the bad guys and can't find any evidence to link them - or beat them up - isn't planting evidence the next best thing?
I'm just more concerned that they are using DNA to find a car thief. I'm not going to imply that this is a victimless crime. But, there's a lot of Executive-level DNA over the mortgage fiasco, Enron, etc and I don't see Executive DNA being used as evidence!

Missing from list and I'd say #1 Sony: Read to crash and burn! http://hardware.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/11/01/1946222&from=rss
My lifelong-quest to become Batman is one step closer! :)

Whether Gralla is or is not a fanboi, I can't imagine being able to write such drivel.
I didn't know there was actually a gradient for the horrendous scale - I guess it does go from 1 to 10 afterall!

Duck tape + nightstick = problem solved. Duck tape fixes everything!

I concur. Judge Ito and a jury would agree Mark Fuhrman planted the mosquito.
Caruso is just plain bad and one of the reasons I never watch the show. Bad acting, horrible puns, stupid pose shots - I could go on.
Maybe should make him a special guest on Dexter! :)
