  1. Missed Opportunity on Origami Feedback Mixed, says Samsung · · Score: 1

You know, I and thousands of others have paid close to half the cost of these in purchasing Epson Photo Viewers for downloading pictures from our cameras while traveling, on assigment, etc. If these "PCs" had slots and reasonable speed for off loading cameras in the field and allowing us to do some editing and forwarding by wireless, they would certainly find a niche among photographers.

  2. Nikon DSLRs and RAW on DMCA Prevents Photoshop Support of Nikon Camera · · Score: 1

It seems that camera preferences are as likely to start flame wars as the type of computer one uses. Having grown up on Canon cameras I switched to a Nikon DSLR when I wanted a serious DSLR. Rather than flame me I suggest that those who argue that this or that is better visit http://www.kenrockwell.com. In truth, I don't think either is better but that newer models benefit from those that came before them. Re RAW, it is a propriatary format and each manufacturer's RAW format differs from the others'. There are big differences in how software reads each RAW format and I can understand why each manufacturer would want their own software to read in their format. This ensures that their format is rendered precisely as the manufacturer intended. Most Nikon users I know use Nikon Capture for this rendering, convert the RAW, and then use PhotoShop to manipulate the image. I am surprised that others are surprised by this.

  3. Ah, memories... on Why Johnny Can't Handwrite · · Score: 1

Many decades ago I attended Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, an all boys, public high school with an engineering curriculum. We had many years of mechanical drawing and were required to print everything as a way to improve our technique. Despite the course, all assignments had to be printed. As a consequence, I loss the ability to write cursive. As I went on to college, grad school, and several careers I regretted that loss. Trying to take notes in school, in business or technical meetings proved impossible and my printing suffered too as I tried to keep up with the flow. I do think cursive writing is important because of the problems I had without it. Despite all the advances in technology over these decades, there are so substitutes for a fast mind and a fast pen.

  4. Beta Lives! on Why VHS Was Better Than Betamax · · Score: 1

Well, Digital Beta lives. Digital Beta tape and drives are still in use at different broadcast centers. These centers get movies from different studios and use these tapes for making house and on air masters for broadcasting. There is no perceptible deterioration between copies and some of the pay per view movies you watch are sometimes broadcast from these tapes or from video servers which were "filled" from these tapes.

Regular Bata tapes and machines were sold in Japan until just a few years ago. IMHO Beta was better at first during the VHS-Beta wars. However, so many manufacturers chose VHS and more money went into upgrading the VHS systems. Over time VHS surpassed Beta in quality.
