Can you imagine the politics over what the textbooks should say about evolution, climate change, economics, history, etc. First edition says Oceania has always been at war with Eurasia but by the second edition, Eurasia has become Oceania's ally.
The media requires a winner. Someone must win the race. If they reported on issues and such instead of concentrating on who is winning we'd be in some other universe.
It may have escaped PC World's notice (not like THAT ever happened before) but there are some applications and drivers that will not install on any of MS's newer OS's and that so-called XP Compatibility mode isn't. And if those applications need to be supported then XP is what you use. Maybe you hide it in a VM that is running on a newer version of Windows but chances are that you'll do like me and keep that XP machine running and wish you never got sucked into the Microsoft maelstrom.
Java did run kinda slow on my old Win95 box but my current Unix and Win7 systems don't display this behavior. Sounds to me like you're living in the past or need a hardware upgrade.
I can't drive and use a phone at the same time. I used to think I could but then I started paying attention and noticed that my speed was varying more. So I started using cruise control. But then I noticed that the truck was drifting more even after I had the steering checked and the wheels aligned. Finally, I remembered that when I used to do telephone technical support I was really good at it because I could visualize what was happening on the other end of the line so well that I wouldn't notice things happening at the next desk. The same thing was happening when I used the phone in the car -- I began to focus on the person I was talking to instead of driving. Yes, the bus was following too closely -- don't think that had anything to do with the driver's mind being occupied with something else?
I used to ride a motorcycle and I learned to drive it as if everyone else on the road was consciously trying to kill me. That's how I drive the car now -- with the phone safely ensconced in the backpack in the back seat. Often it's turned off because when I'm on the road it uses a whole lot of battery trying to find a signal when I'm in between towers. You want to use the phone, fine. Now if you don't have any kids, haven't bred, and want to cull your defective genes that's your choice. But I hope you're in your own lane separated from me by Jersey Barriers because I don't want your car pulling in front of my truck. I don't want your blood on my conscience.
Science, schmience. AT&T plus Verizon can come up with enough money to buy off any legislator foolish enough to try to implement anything as sensible as this. Maybe if it were tied to a tax cut....
As long as a new version of a language maintains existing capabilities, there is no barrier to adding new features. Or like Groovy, just extend to add the features you think are needed but keep the output compatible with the "parent".
Analog signals got fuzzy, snowy, but rarely displayed the pixelation and halting found in digital signals. If this is how they want to fix it, I say they need to be committed.
It started with Creation Science and then evolved into Climate Science Denialism and then evolved into Paul Ryan "Economics" so why should medicine be proven to work. I'm allowed to choose facts and if I don't like the ones that are available I can get the Heritage Foundation or one of the debate team to make some up for me. Same goes here.
If you intend to go into research, the area of concentration for your dissertation may be important but if you're looking for a job, it may not be.
When I was in grad school in Anthropology, one of my fellow students ended up working for Chase Econometrics developing multi-variate statistical models.
At a recent speaking engagement, Temple Grandin (who knows a thing or two about autism) said that Steve Jobs was definitely "an Aspy" and that there are many more in Silicon Valley but she won't use their names because they're still alive.
The models that are so continually wrong are those with an ideological bias. The models which have been consistently correct are ignored because they're out of favor.

How original! Did you think that up all by yourself?
I want one.

My guess is that the T.B'er simply has no life.

There was an OnBoard C for the PalmOS -- before Palm decided to screw it up and ended up killing it.
They get creepier and creepier day by day.

The technological ignorance of the Congressvarmints is matched by their economic ignorance.

Sheesh. I can remember when we had to keep the size of the completed application small enough to fit on a 360K bootable floppy.

Confirming that anthropogenic CO2 does affect climate and proposing that the multiplier is slightly less than what others have suggested. Yawn.
It's just that the fact have a liberal bias and that pisses some people off bigtime.

So what if the football team isn't in the top 25.
Are you suggesting that silence regarding a well-documented issue is the proper way for a vendor to behave?

I don't believe in evolution. I accept it (provisionally) as the best explanation available.
Just use the same password. No one wants to have to run a cracker to gain access to your system anyway.
