  3. SMS Text Messaging?! on The Ridiculous Tech Fees You're Still Paying · · Score: 1

How the heck is text messaging not included in this list?

SMS messages are piggybacked onto existing beacon probes between the cell network and the handset. They cost virtually NOTHING to the carrier. They are 99.9999999% profit. The fact that the general public isn't intelligently adopting iMessages and Google Hangouts for this reason alone is silly. I see the argument though... Short term, the price gouging that occurs in SMS and MMS messages will simply transfer over to the data plans. Long term, the moment SMS is no longer a contract-signing focus, the carriers will become competitive with the data plan fees/restrictions. That's how I see the future anyways. :)

I have been using PC-Tools Antivirus lately with good results. It seems to do the job very well while not killing my cpu time and memory/io.. Its also free and the license doesn't prevent using it for commercial use. You can get it from pack.google.com as well. If you need a version that'll install on Win2k3 server or higher, it'll need to come right from pctools.com.. The pack.google.com version is only for XP/Vista/7. Just my 2cents.

  7. Uhm.... Isn't this the opposite of what we NEED? on New Vote on .xxx Internet Address Nears · · Score: 1

Instead of having .xxx or .porn or WHATEVER... why are we trying to make a home for sites that ALREADY have a home? Getting porn sites to MOVE from the domain space that they helped make HUGE is ridiculous.

Why not have .kid or .k12 or .safe. Then, people could apply for a subscription to one of these domain types which includes people monitoring their site. People could then simply lock their browsers to .kid, .k12, .safe, or whatever and their children could ONLY surf in sites certified as "safe for kids". There could be exclusions such as gmail, slashdot, or whatever... but that sort of a filtering system makes WAY more sense than .xxx.

This seems to be a bad first step for this type of internet de-sexing. Instead of trying to move ALL smut to a .XXX environment and pushing them to "The back of the bus".. Why don't we just create a .k12 or .kid, or .safe set of domains that kids sites can go under voluntarily. Site blockers could simply allow all .kid domains for their childs. Children based sites would be eager to switch to this, while the porn sites would be un-willing to change. I've been talking about this with my friends for sometime - and I'm honestly surprised this has never happened. Common sense isn't something I expect out of the world anymore...

  14. Real Engineers Don't Exist on AMI Guy Talks About TCPA, Palladium, and Other BIOS Issues · · Score: 1, Insightful

Its been my experience that REAL engineers don't exist. Rather they are born. People who go to college, and THEN start to engineer stuff, become engineers. People who freelance engineer stuff, are NOT considered engineers. Engineers are meerly egotistical, degree driven people with little-to-no world experience with the products that they "engineer". Products made from companies with REAL WORLD engineers, are always higher quality and don't fail. Don't get me wrong, every corporation has its share of DECENT degree empowered engineers. Majority rules, however, giving the idiots all of the power. I've worked in a few engineering departments at a LOT of large corporations over the years. What I have said is true at all of them. I doubt its isolated to my opinion. ---_WHEW_--- Glad I got that out there.. I just saw the word engineer in that article and got a little steamed up. :) Forgive me.

  15. I didn't even think there was any contest. on Win2k Cheaper than Linux · · Score: 1

First of all, does anybody still use Win2k for servers? Seems like a waste of processor cycles. I remember playing with Win2K on a dual 500 machine (that was previously working with Slackware 7.1). We installed Win2KAS and voila! I instantly turned a working no-downtime machine into a full time windows-update machine. :) Not only that, but system performance is incredibly unbelievable on a Win2K machine. in my opinion, it turns a worthwhile server into a bloated system-loading waste of space. The ONLY thing Win2KAS should be used for is domain controllers. But, watch out windows.. Samba is making some pretty huge leaps in that venue as well. As for cost - a copy of Mandrake which is every bit as good as redhat is completely free - as are its updates. Only redhat has non-mandatory update costs. in most cases, those updates can be gotten from somewhere else (not redhat). Being that linux is so standard and that so many different distros share component similarities, if something is broken, fix it.. However, you talk about updating constantly - why would you update if your server hasn't been rebooted in 4 months... and you don't plan to start now... Seems crazy to fix something that isn't broken. Windows 2KAS is a globally retarding waste of money and blank cd's. As for the software piracy posts - Windows 2KAS isn't worth pirating. The 7cents per cd is too much capital to put forth. Large corporations that rely on microsoft servers need to re-evaluate their needs. Microsoft Server Families are a flying-ninja-jump-kick to the corporate testicles. Amen. --Micah
