I think most people with cell phones just have them beacuse it's kitchy. I doubt there's really a lot of people who, like you've said, have to be reached wherever they go.
But, out where I live, the towns are a minimum of 7 miles apart, none with a population over 4,000 until you go 50 miles. Basically, anywhere you call is long distance. It's a hell of a lot less expensive to go with a $40/month cell phone bill than a $100+ long distance land-line bill, especially when you get free nights & weekends with a cell.
if you go just a little north of where I live, you'll find roads where you won't come across another person for literally hundreds of miles. If you have car problems or something, you could easily go days without anybody finding you... so you can see how they can still be useful

There's a difference between ligit advertisement and intrusive advertisements. It used to be just snail-mail junk-mail type spam. Then it was fax-spamming. Then it was email spam. I don't even know all the kinds there are now. I just heard about bluetooth messaging spam to cell phones the other day. it's insane. The point is, not all advertisements are bad. The bad ones are ones that use YOUR property and resources illegally.

He couldn't find the word processor program. That's all he wanted to do was a simple text doc. I wondered over there to help him find it, thinking it'd be a simple thing, but i couldn't find it either. I was amazed that they'd make it that difficult to make a plain text document. BTW, since then, I've converted 4 of our office computers to OpenOffice, and everyone loves it.
