I do not think that word means what you think it means.

I believe you mean Structured Programming; Functional refers to programming languages like Lisp or Scheme.

The real advantage to XML is that it provides a machine readable format to write data specifications (schemas).
Then you don't require a programmer to read and understand the specs and write the reader/writer/converter; you only have to provide the schema. Remember, specific uses of XML create a domain specific language, a subset of the domain.

Think of XML kind of like BNF; a language to unambigously specify other data/languages.

  4. OT: smallpox vaccine on Slate On Worms That Plug Security Holes · · Score: 1

Actually, I'm pretty sure the original smallpox vaccine was cowpox. It was noticed that milkmaids were less likely to be infected with smallpox. This was because of their exposure to cowpox, a closely related virus that is much milder on humans.

If you want to check up on it, I belive it was Jenner who experimented by injecting some pus from a cowpox blister and into a young street-urchin before later exposing him to smallpox.

  5. Network ready security cameras on Digitizing VGA? (take 2) · · Score: 1

It sounds like you need something like one of those security cameras that come with ethernet built-in, but with a vga input instead of the camera.

I found this, but I have no idea if its in your budget.

You may be able to hack one of the web enabled cameras to read vga, or put together a small box with a frame grabber from pc/104 parts.

    Look back a bit further, c. 1850-60.

I personally find the Jacquard loom's influence to be much more interesting regarding Charles Babbage, "the father of computing", and Ada Lovelace, "the first programmer".

The loom seems to have been a definite influence on his Analytical Engine (at least on the input design). Read the short bio linked above, it is really a must for anyone interested in computers.

  7. A crane capable of lifting the dish on Mobile Internet Down Under · · Score: 1

    Check out http://www.spitzlift.com/.

I saw this on TV last night, from some national (USA) hardware show. It's lightweight, ~30 lbs (13-14 kg), folds-up, and can lift 500-700 lbs (227-318 kg). It's made to mount in the bed of a truck, but I think you can mount it to your bumper and rotate it to swing your dish in/out of the back.

I don't know anything about the company and there are probably many similar competing products out there, but it seems like it might be just about right for your situation.

    Good luck
