  1. Legal goal based on illegal infrastructure? on Kazaa Fights Back · · Score: 2, Insightful

It may be all well and noble that Sharman never intended a bunch of naughty people to bypass US copyright, but their goal of legality is based on a system fraught with infringment. You might as well be pimp running a hospital in a crack house, in the eyes of the law. No matter how noble and legal your goals are, the hospital doesn't belong there. Just do a Bonzi Buddy, or send spam like all the other honest jerks.

  2. The real cost of CDs on P2P File Sharing Could Cost You A Bundle · · Score: 1

I know I'm coming pretty late into this discussion, but I'd like to throw this out there...

The *manufacturing* cost of a CD is dirt cheap, yes. I hear this all the fricking time. Apparently a lot of people tend to forget that people liked to get paid to manufacture, distribute, promote, perform, and record music. Pay for the factory, pay for the employees at the factory, pay for employee benefits, pay for distribution system, pay for delivery vehicles, pay to insure merchandise and vehicles, pay to hire someone to hire people and go through resumes, place jobs ads, go through resumes, interviews...pay for the building where those music people work, pay for their offices, pay for their computers, pay lawyers, pay lawyers more, give arms and legs to lawyers, pay for packaging, pay someone to design packaging, pay for talent recruitment, pay for recruiter transportation and accomodations.

It's not like the gov't is subsidizing all this or something... as far as I know

After recently doing a review of the HP Media Center, it looks like TiVo series 2 is still the way to go. Granted, you could just get a PVR-capable videocard and go from there, but the cost-to-benefit ratio is still very much in favor of set-top solutions. Like a game console, they just work. No drivers, no viruses, no constant upgrading or all the other niggling issues with owning a computer. Sure TiVo doesn't play CDs or MP3's, but DVD players with those features are easy to come by at a the fraction of the cost of a PVR computer. The only advantage I'm seeing with a PVR computer ATM is media duplication.

  5. Re:What about Mission Critical Setups on Mandated Regulation/Certification for Computer Repair? · · Score: 1

Perhaps you missed my point. I neglected to quote a reply to this topic which may clear the confusion. It was stated that, while mechanics and salon workers have certs for this and that reason, it would be silly to require a cert of a mere technician since their work is relatively non-critical. But thank you for explaining the details. I had no idea these facilities had their own in-house staff, etc. No, really.

  6. What about Mission Critical Setups on Mandated Regulation/Certification for Computer Repair? · · Score: 1

Certs are necessary for mechanics and salons because of the aforementioned reasons, but let's not forget systems and networks set up in hospitals, prisons, military installations, and other sensitive places where 24/7 uptime is a must. This is where knowledge blessed by a cert (slight sarcascm here) can be the difference between life and death, IMHO.
