The problem with Microsoft's patches (especially services packs) is they have a HORRIBLE reputation of breaking stuff.

Most companies cannot in their right mind apply patches to desktops blindly when they have half a dozen desktop applications that could potentially stop working when Microsoft decides to break binary compatibility.

The best they can do is put the patch into a very short life cycle test phase. Perhaps 2 weeks.

    Just imagine:

You patch 3,000 desktops and then your in house developed claim filing application stops working. Now you get to sit back and watch the business grind to a hault.

Fedora's base install will never include mp3 and ntfs until either U.S. patent law is reformed or patents on Mp3 and NTFS expire. Its really not that hard to get mp3 and ntfs support. Its included in a nice FAQ list.

I agree that it would be nice to get mp3 support built in but Red Hat is just covering their legal ass. And its a great example of how software patents are problematic.

As for installing software via commandline, you can get around that by using Synaptic. After installing APT in Fedora, just apt-get install synaptic. Makes it a little less scary.

Of course, I'm still cynical enough to believe that this whole thing is an exercise in legality. SCO isn't looking to the future, well unless you're an exec dreaming about tropical climates.

I wonder how the morale of SCO's employees is. Ya know, the ones who will be left with a worthless company with an worse corporate image when McBride is done with them. A lot of them aren't benefitting from the stock price as much as the execs are and currently I'm sure they'd rather be able to keep their job.

If I were working there, I would be fighting internally to stop McBride and his buddies from driving something that I have worked for straight into the ground. Perhaps an open letter to SCO employees is an order? Just a thought.

Also, this was almost certainly an exit stragegy. If you look at there stock price before and after their filing the complaint, its very obvious they wanted to use this to bump up the cost of the company long enough to get bought by IBM to make them go away. Unfortunatly for them, companies started coming out the woodwork to actually fight them.
