Er... I suppose I wasn't clear. You're right, of course. That's the reason I mentioned Germany's *constructive* vote of no confidence. In Germany, you essentially elect the new Chancellor as a part of the vote of no confidence. If no replacement can be found (by majority, IIRC), the current Chancellor stays.
I'd just like to point out that the California recall vote is not very different from a vote of no confidence in parliamentary systems (perhaps closer to Germany's constructive vote of no confidence than others). The only real difference is that the candidates don't have to be members of the legislature.
If you think that a vote of no confidence is fair, which happens quite often in the "democratic" world, then you should think the California recall is fair.
That said, I happen to dislike votes of no confidence. I'm all for removing an executive from office should (s)he prove incompetent, but holding an election to replace that person should not occur. That is the purpose of offices such as the U.S. Vice President, or, in California's case, the Lt. Governor. What *should* happen is that, should a recall vote occur and Gov. Davis is removed, the Lt. Governor should take his place and an election should be held for Lt. Governor (which is elected seperately by California law, IIRC). Furthermore, that vote should take place in the legislature, not by popular vote.
However, that's me. Feel free to argue with me about it.:)
Am I the only one tired of MMORPGs? I mean, sure, game companies think they're a great way to make money, gotta love that whole subscribe to play thing, but I have yet to play one that managed to immerse me in the same way that, say, Baldur's Gate, or Ultimas 4 through 7 did. Sure, it's great to be able to chat with your peeps and nab P|-|@t L3\/\/t off the corpses in the game, but that gets kinda old after a while. In the end you spend most of your time going after that next level (or worse, making things) rather than furiously trying to figure out how to stop the Guardian.
In short, I want to say to the folks who keep making MMORPGs: where's the beef? Give us substance, not shallow rat-hunter 3d crap!
Excellent point. I don't know where you found this, but you should forward it to Pac Bell's lawyers.
Just in case.;)
The article confuses me.

In it, it makes no mention of Java3d, which is a scene graph API with bindings to OpenGL or Direct3d. Is this announcement going to be a thin binding, or a new version of Java3d? Or will it replace Java3d?
And the end is only if you use begin, you can use {} if you prefer.
Really? That's good. Every Ruby example I've ever seen had begin/end; it looked so nasty that it kept me from looking further. If it allows for multiple means of creating a code block, that's a good thing, allowing people with different styles of coding to code in the same language. It'd be nice if it did python-style whitespace indentation as well.
Of course, I expect the purists to flame me, but thankfully I've got this +5 Cloak of Retardation to protect me.
Well, they *told* me the word "flame" is implied....
Hmm... so are you saying that the events futures market (why does that sound so wierd to me?) is really a means of the government trolling for terrorists? Interesting way to combat terrorism...
There, that's more in keeping with what I know of both languages. Now, Java is superior to PHP for business logic, as you picked out, but Java has JSP/Tomcat, which is functionally just as good as PHP, at least according to benchmarks I saw recently.
Now.. given the choice of Java over PHP for your presentation, why would anyone choose PHP when they can get the same results with JSP, but have the added upshot of keeping everything together in the same basic syntactic setup? Java code is easier to create and maintain than PHP code, and it's faster.
There's no real need to use a different system unless you get a benefit from it. You claim the benefit is in using PHP for presentation in web applications. Fine, but I don't see it. Now, if you suggested something along the lines of Zope's Page Templates, I might agree. But if you're at the point of using Zope for your presentation, there's no reason to use a different platform for the logic, as Zope is written in Python, and Python is an outstanding programming language, easily heads and shoulders above Java in every respect except raw number-crunching performance and IDE availabilty. At least, IMO.:)
But the question is Java vs. PHP. In that case, the answer is Java.
What a great way to fund future terrorism! All you have to do is load your bets on a target, then go blow it up! Talk about your self-fulfilling prophesies!
That's not to say that WW hasn't dropped a few great games; Mage (in its various forms) has always been a great game regardless of being set in the WoD, Exalted continues to amaze me, and the Sword and Sorcery series simply rock. I could go on.:)
But the whole World of Darkness itself... I've never found it appealing. Sorta grated on the nerves, if you will. Never really understood the point, I suppose. I guess I need more angst in my life, who knows? I'll certainly lose no sleep knowing it's gone, though. Maybe now WW can do more of the "different" stuff.
Given that the letter was forged with Gary Kremen's stationary, a better example would be the second mechanic being handed a fake ID and being unable to determine that it was fake.
Under different circumstances, I'd be inclined to agree, but in this case, I'd say NS is not responsible.
One thing I'm concerned about... I was unable to determine if sex.com was actually returned to Gary Kremen. Was it? Network Solutions should certainly be able to take care of that.
First, let me say IANAP. I'm also basically brainstorming; if this, then maybe that.
So... what is antimatter? It's matter whose particles have an opposite charge from the particles we know as matter. A matter proton has a positive charge. An antimatter proton (negaton?) has a negative charge. A matter electron has a negative charge. An antimatter positron has a positive charge.
What would antimatter be like?
The first thing I can think of is that antimatter electricity (positricity?) will flow in the opposite direction. All things that depend upon the charge of electricity, for example, say, magnetic attraction, will be reversed. Matter north would attract antimatter north, and repel antimatter south, and vice-versa.
Also, electromagnetism would be reversed. With matter, magnetic fields generated by an electric current follow the left-hand rule. Magnetic fields generated by a positric current would follow the right-hand rule.
Here's something to think about that follows: light emitted by antimatter, because the electric and magnetic fields are generated in reverse, would be inverted in frequency/wavelength.
hmm....
Would antimatter tend to absorb high-frequency light (uber-ultra-violet) and permit low-frequency (infrared) to pass through, rather than the reverse with matter? That would mess up traditional scanning techniques... X-rays would warm an anti-matter person up, while IR light would act like an X-ray....
Oh, and viewing antimatter would be like the ultimate acid trip. Colors would be fucked up indeed. Normal antimatter stars would probably be the same, since they tend to emit light in all wavelengths, but the interactions of matter with the light would be fucked. Light-loving plants would be red rather than green. The good guys would wear black, not white.
That'd be something fun to write about in your book.:)
*nix needs a better windowing system than X. Not really looking so much as performing. X is bloated and buggy, IMO, so much so that I'd rather use Windows 95 over any X gui any day of the week.
And I hate Windows 95.
Now, I don't know how well this performs, as I've never used it, but I hope "damn well".:(

I turned this up with a quick google:
http://www.multied.com/elections/1992pop.html (Beware popups) 43.3% according to that.

Looks like the prevailing opinion is that this sucks. I'm afraid I have to agree, after a cursory glance. Looks like they overthought the problem.
Personally, I'd much prefer a simple extention of the current sytem to support other gui input controls, like, say, combo boxes.
Hmm....
I didn't know Java3D was on hold -- I've been trying to write a program with it for the past few months too.
I wonder what this is going to be like. I'm not sure if I would prefer a thin wrapper or a totally new API.
Nobody had any blitz flashbacks?

... than a buggy game. HL2 is worth the wait -- as long as it's not vaporware.
JTA and JMS are both libraries, not part of the core technology. You might as well say that OpenGL is part of the C language.
Damn, now I wish I hadn't posted so I could mod you up! Thanks for the links. Daddy like.

Business Logic Java - Good
PHP - Bad.
Presentation Layer (Web)
Java/JSP - OK
PHP - OK

I'm rather glad WoD is gone. I've never liked it.

I still have blisters on my legs from the last time I took "laptop" at its word.
Hmm... yes, a phase shift makes more sense.

Remember, I qualified my post that I was brainstorming. Clearly my storm fizzled out.
Of course... it would be fun sci-fi to conjecture that the light would be reversed.........

Ctrl-x/ctrl-c -- Ctrl-v is extra steps when compared to DND.
/drag/release.
To move a section of text using DND one makes the following actions:
Hilite text (using any method, count it as a single action). Click
To do the equivalent using cut/paste, I do the following:
Hilite text. Cut text. Move cursor. Paste text.
It's two actions vs four actions.
