GNU screen has the ability to share sessions, each pair could connect to the same screen session and share vim/emacs editing and other windows for logs/compiling etc.

icewm rocks, its light takes up very little screen space [without task bar] and everything can be done from keyb :) failing that fluxbox is nice but needs a bit of mousing :(
Good roadies have been doing this for ages! all you need is a good digital multitrack and a stack o scsi cdburners...
