Sure, you're right. I just wanted to point out the obvious idiocy of the analogy. I suppose next we'll be hearing Mr. Open Mind go on about Pepsi including a Coke in each six pack!
Please, not the car analogy! When there's just one company with ~90% of the tire, stereo, oil, or car markets, then you can bring it up. Until then, it's useless.
Yes, that's what I was seeing, minus the X errors for some reason. If it's any consolation, you may get around it by removing your windows font directory from your font path. (You can use "xset -fp dir" to do that.) That worked for me. Maybe that could even be placed into a wine wrapper script. It's not exactly ideal, though....
I fired up a version of Quicken from about 1996, and it actually worked pretty well! At last! This is the first time I can say that. I admit I've skipped a few versions because of some WINE startup problem that I wasn't interested in diagnosing.
Speaking of which, the problem I was having was timing out building font metrics or something. That was because it was having trouble with the fonts on my system. A fix I've seen is to make sure you run "mkfontdir" on all of your font directories. My problem, however, is that it doesn't like xfstt, my True Type font server. If I disable that, things are fine. Does anyone know if there's a way to get them to work together? Running mkfontdir in my windows font directory doesn't help.
Security is obviously very important, but not all of the whiz-bang systems are used for classified computing, so no, you don't necessarily need a clearance to use some of them. And many areas don't require a clearance for entry. The Lab employs many foreign nationals, after all.
The fact is, nothing actually SAYS that that power HAS to be used for something bad, although often it is. He can use it for better. And if he genuinely is trying to do so... just damn let him, instead of getting on your lam0r AC flame-triggers and saying M$ sucks.
So everyone should just sit back and let him do what he thinks is best, even if it isn't for the best and appears to mainly line MS's coffers? What kind of asinine attitude is that? It's particularly bad when you consider that MS's strategies also seem to do everything to screw the competition. It's one thing for them to proactively push technology in the directions they want, but another to ensure it's the only path available. I really fail to understand your logic, especially when you yourself point out how MS is guilty of some of these tactics.
And calling Gates blameless because he can't control everything that goes on is a cop-out. The high-level strategies coming out of MS must certainly involve him. If not, then he's either an ignorant pawn or has trouble sleeping at night.
I also think it's funny that people can claim MS has a monopoly but at the same time predict Linux will take over the server/desktop market. You guys do realize that it is impossible for both things to be true right?
No, that's not true. Keep in mind they're in an antitrust lawsuit at the moment. That no doubt seriously affects their willingness to "monopolize". Plus, I think it's telling that the only potential competition is one that is being developed and available for free. Not much of a free market when it takes a complete paradigm shift (open source software) to compete.
That was based, of course, on the previous poster's comment that the laptops aren't Linux compatible. A winmodem here, an unsupported video card there, and you've got problems.
I went to RPI in the late '80s and early '90s, and I was thinking to myself as I was reading the story: "I'm surprised that wasn't RPI...." They seemed to pride themselves on their innovative use of computers in the classroom back then. (At least they were using Suns.) Plus, there seemed to be an air of "get money at any cost" (ironic phrase there) and a desperate desire to be seen as one of the big boys, like MIT. Sounds like things have headed south recently. Too bad. I can't imagine being forced to buy a Windows-only laptop. What a crock.
I'm about to throw down for a Nikon 700. The gPhoto site mentions only the 900 and 950. I would think the 700 would work also, since it's quite similar to the 950. Does anyone know for sure?
As others have pointed out, it's idiotic to assume that anyone that doesn't like Bill Gates or his actions is just jealous. (Or, for that matter, that "everyone of us" is jealous.) While it would be nice to have a few billion in the bank, it has nothing to do with my dislike for him. I'm not even jealous of millionaires that I respect.
I do admit that I don't know the man personally (surprise, surprise), but you can surmise quite a bit from his and his company's actions and second-hand stories. It doesn't paint a pretty picture.
So... are you jealous of the crack dealer down the street driving the brand new Mercedes? He sure is a shrewd businessman! If you criticize him, you must just be jealous!
Well, I'm sure that's part of it, but from what I've read, very few cameras have been shipped to any of the big web discount sites. I think Nikon has just had big problems meeting demand.
If only I could get one! I ordered one from buy.com in February (!) and still haven't received it. My next purchase probably won't be a Nikon, who seems to chronically screw production up. I had a similar problem trying to order a 900S.

Can you get linux on a Dimension yet? Last I saw, I think it was only on the Optiplexes, which are the "workstations".

Yeah, boo hoo to the original MS shill. It's so easy to believe that this is all about money, huh? Some of us really DO think justice is being served.

It's run for the Department of Energy.

Unlike Bill Gates, I don't see Linus constantly harping about how innovative he is, though.

RPI; is that in Rochester? :)

Even setting up WINE and makeing Word 2000 run didn't phaze / convince them.
Just out of curiosity, how well does Word 2000 work with WINE? I'd be happy just to get Quicken 6 (or something like that) going 100%.
