One of the reasons that I think that the CPL hasn't gained in popularity is the fact that they are only playing FPS Games. What about me, the console gamer? I'd seriously like to compete, but there need to be console game categories. I don't have exact figures, but I would think that there is a larger market of console gamers in existence. If they had categories for say Soul Calibur 2, SSBM, F-Zero, Gran turismo, etc. I think you would see more interest.
I remember when Nintendo used to have the nintendo world championships. I went to such and event (and ended up 3rd regionally) and there were literally thousands of people participating. They need to have more varied game genres and some console games more people should gain interest.
What you think about nintendo not participating online gaming is irrelevant, what matters is that they're doing that for a reason. They're innovators. Putting the games mentioned online will not be doing anything new. They're waiting until the costs can be lowered, and the execution of the online games is doing something innovative. They're not bandwagonists, and they're going to wait until it can be done correctly, and cheaply.
Why nokia didn't at least try to licence the current gba technology? (maybe they did) But it all makes perfect sense when you stop and think about it. You have an established chipset that already had about 250 (am i right) games available. The quality of the graphics and sound are already accepted by the general public. Now they would have had to probably make their own interface, as in the shape of the shell, buttons, as well as adding the wireless support (easy) and there you go, a good phone (love nokias) and a good protable system, at a decent price. That's what really bugs me though, is that a company as large as Nokia would even think that it's going to sell at what they're charging...
The problem is that game companies are too focused on graphics instead of making the game fun to play. I've noticed this trend the past few years. What happened to the things that matter, gameplay, art style (why do almost all Xbox games look alike?) interactive sound, etc. I still play many of my old SNES ans NES games, not because they look good, but because they are fun and genuinely challenging to play. Thank god for Ninty, or I wouldn't play games at all anymore...
