I've got CD-R's dated from 1998 that are almost completely dead. Went back to restore some old saves for different games (I was possessed to play Diablo 1 again, shoot me) and it took multiple attempts with data recovery tools to pull them out. I went through the rest of my archives from that time period and found that about 50% of my old archives are dead. Thank god I don't really *need* them, but I'd have liked to keep them.

For quite a while I used RedHat and did enjoy the ease that package management gave to a system. For a workstation equivilant, I still agree with this solution in general. However having run through Linux From Scratch (www.linuxfromscratch.org) I see that on a server-class machine, there is a TON of unnecessary bloat. Why should it take a GIG of space , or more, to host just a Web server with MySQL and FTP access? With LFS I can build a specific purpose system and get that footprint down to around 350 to 425mb and that's including the kernel sources being left for recompile and a full compile environment. I've been told that some people can get the same functions stripped down to less than 200mb (this is all of course NOT counting your SQL databases).

At this point there needs to be a big fork somewhere to divource the Linux Desktop from the Linux Server. Linux will do both, but one should not cause issues for the other. If a desktop user wants to run a FTP server, they should be able to. If the server admin wants to have a mail client (pine) or an IRC client (BitchX) installed for accessing information, he should be able to. But these features should be implemented with that specifically in mind. Not installing half a million libs because *maybe* the server admin wants to install addon XYZ for pine and it needs this lib while pine itself doesn't...

I can't really see any of the CMS/blog packages really handling what you're looking for unless you're going to get webspace somewhere and maintain it yourself with them just having access to occasionally add entries/pics... :( Of course you could cheat a bit and give them LiveJournal accounts and then setup their blogging utils to let them post things... ;) (another feature that pLog is working on.. heh)

    Suggestions for Windows:

    EMail: Mozilla Thunderbird

Personally I don't like the way the Mozilla mail client is setup, but Thunderbird works quite well. If I'm not going to use the Email from Mozilla, no sense in installing it so go with Firebird.

AntiVirus: I've seen AVG being named, and personally I don't like it. I've had TOO many users bring in their computers and ask me to replace it with Norton or McAfee. If you're not opposed to On-Line (meaning no automatic protection) scanning you can hit Housecall (http://housecall.trendmicro.com). It's been fairly good thus far, but if you're on Dialup it's a pain in the ass.

Office Suite: Open Office or Star Office. Take your pick. Personally I never do enough in an office suite to bother with it. The limited word processing that I do can be handled with WordPad or KWrite in general.

FTP Client: FileZilla. Look for it on SourceForge.

SSH Client: For Windows (unless you install Cygwin) the only free SSH client I can think of is puTTY, and I'm not that impressed with it other than it's super tiny and really portable.

X Server: Again, unless you run Cygwin, I'm not sure there is a 'free' one out there.

CDBurner: Again, unless you run Cygwin and are able to compile one of the open source burners, I think you're hosed here. Nero is now $100... bah.

MP3 Player: WinAmp 2.9. The 3.0 line is just too damned bloated and annoying IMO. Just make sure you check your system for spyware after installing. ;)

These are all the major things that come to mind for me other than games (check your local emulation website... NES/SNES/Genesis, etc) or work-specific things that I use. Hope that helps.

IF I can keep the traffic ATM based, given that a chunk of it comes in as ATM to begin with and most of it will leave as ATM, it should be an overall benefit to network performanc not to have to undergo 2 SAR dumps, shouldn't it?

If you want to compare things, try comparing what each can offer. I know that Verizon can offer 7.1m down with 1.5m up and SWBell was able to offer 10m down (burst from 1.5m) with 1.5m up (burst from 384k) at one point (don't know that they still do).... From what I've seen most cable companies only have 2 plans, Residential and Business. And Business of course is better bandwidth, but MUCH more expensive. If you go with a Telco offering under DSL, you have similar limitations in options, but going with a 3rd party ISP you can get MUCH better speeds than I've seen with some cable providers, with a bit more cost in most cases unfortunately....
