    Wait.. Are you saying I couldn't prove the existence of monopole by making one? You can mathematically extrapolate its properties until you are blue in the face, but you can't prove its existence in math. Think about particle physics. Our creation of the top Quark, didn't prove its existence?

    No the registrars themselves have to pay ~ $6 a year/per name to the registry ( verisign ) for the domains they themselves purchase. So yes, it does cost anyone other than verisign at least 6 million to register 1 Million names.

    Exactly. I guess the point of this article was to examine weather or not it made sense in the case of a laptop,as many are now starting to offer one as an option. But it would have been nice to point out the real awesome potential they have for servers.

    Well, that depends upon whether or not you want me as a customer. I look at the cert. Will not buy anything from a site with a CA, I don't trust. I might not make a dent in your sales, but I am often asked to recommend sites for friends, family, non for profits, and small businesses.

    There are already 3-4 programs for just about every niche in the linux desktop. Do you really think many of those would benefit from being rewritten in Java? Do you really think the license of Java really caused people to not write apps in it?

    But you can't trust the pickpocket to explain why what he does is bad. That is my point. What other people do shouldn't affect what you do, and why. The rapers and murderers can always find some one who is worse. Maybe they only kill gang members and rape rapists, and justify their actions in the same manner " There is some one worse than me. I'm only doing what they deserve". Obviously, we can't trust them to give us an honest opinion on raping and murdering. Trust me the record execs really think that its them that are being raped and murdered for their crimes of pick pocketing.

    I'm basically saying that both moral compasses are screwed up. Being in the legal field you can surely appreciate the meaning of a conflict of interest, and why judges cannot hear trials when dealing with parties that involve friends. I'm basically saying that the file shares have a vested interest in sharing files ( duh), and as a consequence of that they are not in the position to determine what is fair to all parties when concerning file sharing.

    No, its exactly the same. I wouldn't expect anyone associated with the petroleum industry to understand, but I'll try again ( nothing personal, I've had friends in the industry that had to leave because they just couldn't live with the guilt -- re: Shell in Nigeria). A honest value system must take into account the situations of people other than yourself. To pretend that you are only hurting RIAA is a fantasy, a symptom of a corrupt moral system. Everyone knows that the entertainment industry is corrupt, but file sharing has also corrupted us all.

    Good job not doing any research at all. Despite the sensational headline a few days ago, Nothing that is Open source in MySql will be close sourced in the future. They will introduce a few add on backup products that will not be open, none of which exist today. So if you are happy with the current MySql, nothing is going to change. You'll still have full access to the course code you have today and any and all improvements that come in the future.

    In the same sense that huge oil companies don't believe in global warming, file shares choose to believe that anything they are doing is not wrong. Trust me, the record companies don't think they are doing anything wrong either.

    Maybe this is all just an explanation of why they will raise their rates shortly, but the good news out of that is that they are investing in infrastructure. They are still looking for long term solutions to problems that are arising.

    Everyone calls *IAA evil, I was just using the common slashdot terminology to make a point. Its pretty clear at least in the US courts that it file sharing of copy written material is illegal. There have also been several class action suits proving illegal anti competitive action on behalf of the record labels as well. both are do illegal things, both are wrong. Right and wrong, good and evil may depend upon your value system, but you really have to ask if your value system has been skewed by what is best for yourself rather than what is best for everyone.

    Yes, its all very stupid. Is RIAA evil? of course. Are file shares of copry written material evil? Of course. Just because there are two sides,doesn't mean any of them are correct. In most wars both sides are wrong.

    I just want to always be able to run modified code on my device. GPL 3 compatibility would ensure that I could. Its not a mere technicality, where I could just choose to ignore one of the clauses and make it work anyways. There is no way for me to change the code that runs on my (hypothetical) iphone.

    Yeah, I'll admit. That was the first time I heard about him. And that's still the only thing I had heard about him, until this story.

    My loss, I'm sure, but I can only be influenced by so many bloggers. The list is finite, and tearing up a contract isn't going to do it for me. Maybe if he told me to burn my pants. He might want to try that one.

    My favorite: a couple co-workers wrote a dos background program that prevented a user from typing the word "go". Normally that wouldn't be a problem, but the targeted coworker had written a complex batch script that compiled the source and loaded it on his dev machine named -- go.bat. It was pretty funny to watch. The g key works, the o key works but typing g then o was impossible. they also wrote a program that caused icons to flee from the mouse. That was just as fun, but easier to figure out the cause.

    100% correct. If anything the story is a bit absurd. If you look at the statistics for high school graduation rates, and college attendance, it shouldn't be any surprise that blacks are underrepresented in the video game development niche. As a country the United States still has a long way to go to create a level playing field, that many of the posters ignorantly believe we have.
