  1. Stupid humans on Petri Dish Babies, 25 Years Later · · Score: 1

From an outsider's viewpoint, our society is screwed up. Some people go through great lenghts to have children and others go through great lengths to avoid having children. Its sort of like a farmer buring his crops while millions starve. Yeah its legal (his crops he can do what he wants), but kinda heartless.

But, our lord of geeks the esteemed Taco lives there. Surely he could not live in a geekless wasteland!
Actually, you are correct. Not much geek stuff to do. Watching wooden shoes being made is dorky but not really geeky. Plus they really aren't at all comfortable.

  3. Holland, Michigan home of the Taco on A Geek's Tour Of North America? · · Score: 2, Funny

I've actually been to Holland several times, but this was before there was a slashdot. I know Cmdr Taco would hate having tons of people knocking on his door everyday, but it would be cool for about 15 seconds to see him in action. Then it would be time to visit the wooden shoe factory.

Who the fuck do you think owns MP3.com?
Yeah, I know its owned by the record industry. You got here right in time Captain.
MP3.com hasn't been "free" since even before the lawsuits... in fact, that's why they were sued.
I guess I don't know what you mean by free. They were sued over their myMp3 service that let people rip copyrighted cds and store the mp3's on their servers. And allowed you or anyone with your username and password to stream them from anywhere. The music availiable for download was always free and had the permission of the copyright owners.

  5. Dude, thats almost flaimebait. on Sell Your Music on iTunes Music Store · · Score: 1

However, I would hate to see iTMS turn into a place where there is a bunch of crap music, sort of like MP3.com.

The only crap on MP3.com is the "mainstream" music that the record labels put on there. I have found so many brilliant artists there. I would hate it to become a replacement for mp3.com because then it would nolonger be free.

I could be wrong, but I thought they did away with those. But thinking again, I remeber they weren't putting a substaial part of the operating system into the rom liek they used to. They still might just be using it as a security measure. That might prohibit the self builder from making mac clones, but if there was a win xp build for ppc one could probaly install xp ontop of a mac. As for the "conspiracy" part, remeber that you can only stab some one in the back if they are not suspecting it. Keep your friends close, and your enimies even closer. Again, I'm not saying I *know* anything is going on. I was just trying to explore the potential consequences of such a move. You can only be suprised if you didn't see something comming. Trust no one.

I don't know what will happen, but I'm starting to get a little nervous. That makes me even more nervous because that is exaclty the kind of reaction sco wants.

Yeah, thats what I'm saying. What would stop people from doing it ( if its technically possible some people will do it regardless of leagality)? Here's a riddle for everyone to think about: If apple's a hardware company what unique piece of hardware does it actually make? The motherboard?
I think apple is really a software company that has managed to force people to buy hardware from it( at high margins) so their software can be run. As obvious as that statement is, I think many people forget it.

I think if you read the end of the article where they are talking about the possibility of straight non apple boxes with 970 inside, you'll notice that they can not reply. Why not? It would be obvious to have linux based servers on top of the platform, so to have no responce to that makes me wonder if they aren't talking to soemone else about something nonobvious. What is the most non obvious step that would really get it in trouble with apple? Another deal with Microsoft. Heck the NT Kernel is portable and is currently being ported to itanium2 and amd64 why not ppc 970? I don't know how closely apple has tied panther to Their chipset, but if it isn't too tight this could mean cheap apple clones( they wouldn't ship with osx, but it could be installed). Now that would kill apple, and as a guy who had advance knowledge of it, I would simply say "No Comment" when asked about non apple based ppc 970 platforms.

ASP.NET is much faster in my experiance because it is compiled rather than interpreted as in the case of classic asp.
I guess your question really is wheather or not .net has good price /performance on lower end server/workstations. I really don't know if that was Microsofts real target with DOT NET. They were trying to make it a Java/ IBM/SUn killer. Thats where the biggest profit margins are. In most cases there are some special tricks improve scalability of apps. The GPL can affect code that was written under another license. A virus can make a cell create copies of itself, even though that was not its original purpose. Its an analogy. The Bsd license doesn't go far enough. There should be something in the middle. I thought the LGPL was perfect, but if it doesn't apply to Java jar files, then screw it. Don't use it with JAVA.

I'm not a fan of the "it compiles, ship it! and we'll fix it in a service pack" mentality.
And I'm not a fan of waiting for beta testing that will never happen before releasing it. It is a thousand times easier to find bugs that have been found. Therefore the method that allows you to find the most bugs in the shortest amount of time is the best method. This is assuming that you are not actually selling the product for a profit. In other words, release the 2.6 kernel because no one important is going to use it until it gets put into a distribution. So there's sort of always a testing period after the release but before most people start using it.
ok, I've managed to completly disagree with myself several times. I guess that means I must be right. Its pretty clear to me that there *isn't* a best solution. So for heaven's sake just do something, it will be better than nothing.

The end result is that I don't usually mod some one as Informative unless I alreadly have a great deal of experiance in that area and they have added non obvious information ( to the non expert) that I know to be correct.
