I want to know how VT was able to do it's cost analysis so fast. From what I've heard, VT ordered the G5 the day they came out, or shortly after. But if one were to perform a cost vs performance, they would need background data. Also, they should have been hesitant to accept Apple's specs on the machine, and hoped for some real world test, or maybe some in-house testing of a few machines. I find it hard to believe that VT was able to truly compare the G5 to competitor products, with out prior data of the machines.
On the other hand, I would say that some of the software features of OS X would make the machines fairly cheaper in terms of setup time. I don't know if they use Rendezvous (I know that some software uses it for distributed computing, Final Cut Pro and XCode in particular). Also, the other OS X features that have already been mentioned like cooling and the fact that it is UNIX based.
Anyways, this is enough of a rant, and I'll let someone else have the floor now.
I heard that Panther is going to have X11 integrated into the OS.
How tight is this integration, and if I'm running an app in X11 how different does it feel?
Are the main things going to be there like copy and paste with other apps? How about drag and drop?
when I go to the panther website, this is all that I see:
Panther will include a final X11 window server for Unix-based apps, improved NFS/UFS, FreeBSD 5 innovations as well as support for popular Linux APIs, IPv6 and other important acronyms.
It would be nice to hear from someone that has the beta of panther installed that is using the this X11, (if it is available).
I have a 12" Powerbook, and I know that apple says the highest ram I can fit into it is 512+128 (on the mother board) = 640 MB.
But, Apple made that claim when the largest DDR PC2100 available was a 512. Now there is a 1 Gig version of the PC 2100.
So my question is: Does anyone know if the 1 Gig of ram will work with the 12" PB?
I remember reading about this earlier this year in one of the reviews of the product, but now I can't remember.
I couln't agree more with the bottom line argument.
Think about how much more money apple makes on Software like:
Final Cut Pro/Express
Logic Platinum
Shake
Keynote
but then think about how much money Apple makes on their X11. Maybe indirectly. For example, the matlab package is a lot faster with the Apple's X11 graphics engine and the quartz-wm. And then people buy more Macs because of this, but it is much easier to convience Stockholders about direct income.
Another thing that I noticed in 67 is that when I would Hide Safari, it would crash sometimes.
I've been trying to make 73 crash by hiding, in the last few minutes to no avail.
Also, the auto fill feature button is different (I know your wanting functional improvments).
Another new feature is the "Reset Safari" found under the Safari menu. It appears to empty your cache, delete cookies, history, etc. Nice if you don't want your boss/wife finding all that porn you've been looking at.
There are more options when you right click on somethign (ctrl-click).
Some pdf don't automatically launch for me though after downloading them, I had this problem with 67, but not with 60.
There appears to be more options in the preferences too.
Something else though, is that applications will have to be re-written (or at least recompiled) to take advantave of the larger ram and other features of a 64-bit machine.
Sure database structures can be larger, but what about all the apple die-hard graphic gurus, that have files larger than 2 Gigs. Then what about the biology folks that are mapping the the human gens (that file takes up an iPod)
At then what about my needs, and the ability to run every applications I have from ram so that I don't have to wait for my hard drive.
Is panther going to be a 64 bit OS? Are they preping us for the IBM 970?
That would make sense why they are trying to get all the Developers proper training on the new OS, (but they do that usually).
What other tools could they give us?
Probably something that no-one else is doing, or no-one else is doing well.
Some things I would like to see:
Better integrated ftp support (You can see a hint of this with safari).
More options of the gui and finder (graphite and aqua are nice, but...)
More business tools (Make Bill sweat)
And of course more speed and adoption of leading technologies.
I can't get it work either. I guess this feature is not fully functional.
Just a teaser....
But there is always V65 that we can obtain illegally soon enough.
They should name it a symbol that is unpronounable.
Then people would would call it "The browser formally known as Chimera", or "The Browser" for short.

Thank you for your help.
Lets compare this to some other things that people buy:
Coke sells 1 billion Coca-Colas every two days.
McDonalds serves "Billions and Billions Daily".
But the thing to remember is that this is only for 5% of the computer owners market.

Here is the OS X if you have stuffit installed
which it does by default.
OS X:

When are these power tools going to be available on Limewire so that I can download them?
Apple, I hope you are laughing at this, and not calling your lawyer.
my FAVORITE video editing software. in fact, that is the ONLY reason I use a mac
Does anyone use a mac for its Hardware?
If you haven't noticed, no one has put anything up for Apple in a while (last wed).
When that happens, they go to old news that was not news worthy the first go around.
