    You respect her for deciding that avoiding lawsuits was more important than her supposed faith? She doesn't look stupid, she looks like the opportunist criminal she always was.

    It wasn't her faith in God that made her believe the vaccines caused autism. It was her belief in a scientific research paper done by a doctor.

    This is probably false. Religiosity is strongly and negatively correlated with IQ, and IQ is heritable.

    I don't know about religious people, but as far as people who believe in God, I know smart ones and dumb ones. The smart ones tend to have arrived at their belief after intellectual reasoning, the not so smart ones tend to blindly believe,

    They both have their strengths and weaknesses. Abbyy tends to have better accuracy overall.

    I use ABBYY FineReader on an occasional basis. Compared to other proprietary OCR software, one strength of Abbyy is that it is relatively lightweight and runs fast. It's absolutely not the bloated POS that Nuance Omnipage is. And it doesn't have that MS ribbon-style interface and other UI novelties that substantially deviate from what is "tried and true".

    I'll agree with that. The only things I care about are speed and accuracy. I just want an SDK to hit. I don't need a UI. I want this stuff to run lights out. If I need a UI for something, I will build it, thank you very much. Just concentrate on making your core product better.

    They don't have a ton of consumer-facing products, but they are in fact very well-known in the technology industry.
    The text -to-speech on my Android is Nuance as well. Also, heard of Dragon Naturally Speaking? That's Nuance now.

    Well, I have heard of both, as has just about anybody who works with OCR at all.
    They both have their strengths and weaknesses. Abbyy tends to have better accuracy overall. I think the biggest weaknesses on both of their parts is that they are not putting as much effort into the engines anymore and are putting more effort into ancillary crap that is best left to third party vendors that know what they are doing. In a lot of cases, they are marketing products that directly compete with companies who have licensed their OCR engines. That's gotta be a kick in the nuts to their customers.

    God knows I'm not usually one to cite Jesus, but whatever happened to "turn the other cheek"? After 9/11, the World Trade Center should have been rebuilt and the muslim community in the U.S. should have been embraced and integrated. The message to terrorists and the world should have been; while extremists celebrate fear and death, we celebrate our freedom, pluralism and life.

    Unfortunately, you've only got one more cheek. What do you do after they slap that one too?
    It's not like embracing freedom, pluralism and life would make the terrorists stop hating us.

    Instead of a cab driver there is a cab "minder". He sits in the front but doesn't touch the controls. Instead his only job is lift people's bags into the trunk and chat with the passengers. He is a temp worker at 30 hours a week, paid minimum wage (+ the temp agency's cut).

    All of those people who have no skills beyond their meager abilities to process sensory input and turn the results into mechanical action. All of them replaced by machines and possibly minimum wage, no-benefits, temp workers.

    Yeah, right. Once elevators got buttons, how long did we keep elevator operators around? Same with cabs. Another quarter million on the government teat.

    Even more sad is that someone your age can't let go of the symbolism of a dead era.

    I wasn't born in that era, but I understand the sentiment completely. During the late 50's through the mid-70's, we experience the pinnacle of technology and humankind has been going down hill since. We had rockets that went to the moon. We had supersonic transport. We built the fastest airplane ever, we built several different airplane models that are still in production and have yet to be surpassed. We invented what eventually became the internet. Since then, we haven't done much of anything except squabble and fight and sue. One might also notice a correlation in the diminishing of funding for education and research to our newfound stunning lack of achievement.

    If your government is corrupt it is because the generally apathetic USA voters are quite happy with it that way. If they weren't happy they would stop voting in the same people.

    Right now, we vote for the lesser of two evils. If we don't the more evil one might win. There is no option to vote out the evil. Even if the majority votes for neither evil, which has happened in every election as long as I have been alive, one of the evils still wins.

    First of all, what country? Terrorists in a group come from different countries and they have no country which they represent. Second of all, we entered Afghanistan as a response to the terrorists blowing up our airliners. If no airliners had been blown up, we wouldn't have gone into Afghanistan to find the guy responsible.

    This goes to show that the reason that people from the rest of the world hate Americans is because Americans are ALSO arseholes.

    Yes, a huge percentage of Americans are actually quite proud of the version of the USA that exists in their heads. Just letting you know.

    As well they should be. All of the people I know are disappointed with where our country is and with where our country is going. However, they are also fiercely patriotic, knowing that the U.S. has been a really awesome country and can still be a really awesome country. It has not gone too far yet to turn back, but we are getting closer to the point of no return for sure.
    No, I see no problem with being disappointed in your country and yet highly patriotic.

    Well, of course this happens to people of all races, but if it doesn't happen to a minority, then it is not controversial, and nobody would click on the links. So you only get it reported when it happens to a minority. We can't just throw out a random searchee just because they happen to be of the race/ethnicity/religion that is responsible for most of the terrorist acts in our country.

    I'm 54. I remember how pissed I got when leaded PREMIUM went to $0.60 a gallon.
    I don't remember them even having "flavored" gas back then. Of course, I don't remember 60 cents, but I remember 70 to 75 cents. And back then, it was regular, unleaded or diesel. At least in my neck of the woods.

    No, it was like 70 cents where I live , and now it is $3.50. And I am no Grampa. I am in my early 40s. Most of my similar aged friends are already grampas, but that is due to either them being irresponsible as a teen, or their children being irresponsible as teens, or both.

    The summary says he took the review down and then they sued him. The article says he did not take the review down. I will admit that I wasn't immediately able to find the review, but there are three others on tripadvisor about the Hotel Quebec having bedbugs. It is a chain, though so not sure if it is the same one.
    Aren't bedbugs really tiny and hard to see? Isn't it more likely that these were not bedbugs the species, but some kind of other bugs on the bed?

    My normal electric bills are ~$180/month. If FPL charged me 2% month more to pay for amortizing the cost of burying the neighborhood power lines out over 25 years, my bills would increase by approximately $43/year.

    But the estimated cost of burying the lines underground was $40,000 per customer based on a study by NorthEast Utilities after the recent hurricane. And that it would take 40 years. Amortized over 40 years, you would be looking at an increased cost of $1,000 per year. For you, that is about a 50% increase. Maybe it would be cheaper in Florida. No mountains, and you're just digging in sand. Of course, it is going under the roadways and whatnot that costs you.

    I bet there would be a big upswing in demand for race tracks open to the public and plenty of new businesses to cater to that need.
    Of course, not driving on a regular basis will make people really suck at racing.

    As long as insurance is required by the government, there is no reason for the rates to drop, even if they never have to pay out a dime. They can charge whatever they want and legally you just have to pay it or go to jail if you get caught driving without.

    Count me in as well. I do not actually like driving. That's a lot of wasted time for me. I'd rather do so many more things during that driving time. I could read all my commute time. Or even play need for speed! :)

    I don't like driving during my commute, however I do like driving for fun. Unfortunately driving for fun is beyond my economic means these days. Gas is 6 or 7 times what it was when I was a teenager.
