  1. Re:We're lucky on Earth Officially Home To 7 Billion Humans · · Score: 1

Because there simply aren't enough resources for another billion people to live like Americans, consuming oil at the kind of rate we do.
Maybe if there were another billion people here with the education and other groundwork laid out, then one of them would come up with a substitute for oil. Population growth is not a problem in a society where each person added contributes greater than or equal to what he consumes. The problem comes when another person is born into a place where there is almost no production whatsoever and they already don't have enough resources to consume. Unfortunately for us, populations are shrinking in places where production outpaces consumption, and populations are expanding in areas where consumption far outpaces production.
It is extremely irresponsible for people who have no resources, no jobs, no crops and nothing to sell to have more children. Before we feel guilty about not helping these people, we have to get them to do their part by not actively trying to make the problem worse.

People who just have to know what color poop their friend just made RIGHT NOW and don't care what they have to pay for it. people who have to have the latest handheld toy and don't care what the data rates are. People who see that the hollywood types have data on their phones and so they want it too. These are your problem. As you have said, you may drop the data plan altogether and go back to the regular cell phone. That is great. If even a few million more did that, then the cell phone companies would realize that people would rather do without than pay the high cost, and they would be forced to lower prices to pick up more business. Unfortunately, there are a LOT of people in the U.S. with more money than sense, so it will probably be a long time before we see data prices come down to a reasonable level.

It's not the day traders that affect how management sets policy. They couldn't care less how a company performs quarter to quarter because they are trying to make a buck today. The people who are the problem are people like you and me who have a heart attack every time our 401k drops a little bi, and the people who sit there staring at their stock portfolio for hours a day instead of working at work. In other words, the average Joe is the problem. We have to as a society get back into the mindset of looking at the long term. This also goes all the way to the top. Even if the C level people weren't concerned about stockholders demanding quarter to quarter performance, much of their incentive is based on stock price and so they do everything to maximize it in the short term, and then get the heck out before it comes to light that they killed the golden goose.

I went to a state school, and my total costs per semester was about $1200. I graduated in 1993. My stepson is in college at a state school right now. The total costs per semester are about 6,000. The universities are obviously far outpacing inflation in their increases in costs, although the quality of education still appears to be about the same.
I had a few student loans that I took out when I didn't have enough to pay the full amount up front. I got them paid back within a few years. The interest rates were very high for student loans when I was in school, and are even higher now. My dad told me of how when he was in college, the student loan rates were 1 or 2%. In order to have more capacity, they are going to have to build another plant. Building another plant is EXPENSIVE. Now, I should say that they did TRY to build another plant, but it was politically blocked by the greens, so now the only kind of grid increase we are allowed to do is wind energy and that is hideously expensive. And it won't be long before the greens stop us from putting up wind turbines because of the poor blind and deaf birds which are unable to avoid the blades.
