Also, I don't get why they just didn't phase this in slowly. Why not just have everyone with a name that begins with 'A' get on today, 'B' tomorrow, etc. Or use the last 2 digits of your SSN for it. I bet even if it wasn't strictly enforced and they just asked nicely it probably would have worked out better than it did.
Well, because they would have run out of money by the time they got to Mr. Aardvark and everybody else would be screwed.
Things Americans do care about: sucking the entitlement teat.
As an American, I abhor the principal of the entitlement teat. Unfortunately, our government is more and more trying to make it look like the way to go. Just let Uncle Obama take care of you. Quit your job, live off the government. Otherwise, we will raise your taxes and lower your standard of living until the folks living off the government have nicer stuff than you.
Even with private health insurance, in order to afford a reasonable monthly premium (still more than I pay with employer subsidized insurance) the deductible was so high that any major incident would still be devastating.
Sounds like you need to have Major Medical, aka Catastrophic, aka Health Insurance. Everything over the relatively high deductible is paid for by the insurance company. You pay everything up to that deductible out of pocket, but at the insurance company contracted rates. And the premiums are much lower than Health Plan rates. Even if you hit the deductible every year, you would still be paying less than you would pay just for the premiums of the Health Plan.
If th e US has a civilized Health Care system, I would start my own business much easier. Or join a start up without worrying about health care.
I can't for the life of me understand why people insist on putting their health in the hands of an employer. That ought to be outright illegal. It essential enforces indentured servitude to the employer.
Get your own insurance; not a health plan, insurance. It will be much cheaper out of pocket than the health plan, and you will not be inextricably tied to your company.
"Do you want to sell sugared water for the rest of your life? Or do you want to come with me and change the world?"
So, this was about metaphorical versus literal sugar water?
Yes, and didn't we just recently have an article where some state had made it illegal to use your phone as a GPS in a motor vehicle?
Not to mention, a good in-dash GPS is going to have inertial navigation as a backup, and your phone is not, although it does have accelerometers, they tend to be too cheap to be of much use for inertial navigation.
It is the job of the leadership to make the company succeed or fail and the responsibility of the leadership to take the blame when it fails. If their employees suck, it is their responsibility to get new ones. If they suck as management, it is their duty to step down and let someone better take over. This actually happens in the far east, but is pretty infrequent in the west. Here, they just throw the worker bees under the bus and try to make the workers take the responsibility that the managers are supposed to take.
So after a while all the management positions end up filled with mediocre managers who all got the job because they were buddy-buddy with someone
That's not entirely true. SOME of the management positions get filled with mediocre managers who were unable to perform the technical job, so the person good at the technical job gets stuck at the same level, while the people who are incompetent are able to continue rising through the organization.
I guess in your situation, I would just go ahead and report that I was working all of the hours between noon on Friday and 8 a.m. Monday morning, and then just not go back and fix it since that pisses them off. Then, since they are requesting my time by the hour, i would go ahead and submit to the labor board that they are benchmarking me by the hour so I must be an hourly employee and therefore entitled to overtime, and oh by the way, here are my timesheets for the last 5 years indicating 80 hours per week or thereabouts.
Except you typical American Freeway does not have a speed limit of 70 mph, and four tons is heavier than every single non-commercial vehicle in the world.
Anyone who has been playing GTA games should know that banging hookers is just a momentary distraction in dozens of hours of gameplay
Yes. In GTA, banging or killing hookers is not part of the story and you can choose to do it or not do it. Just as in real life, you can choose to bang hookers, kill hookers, or ignore hookers. Just because a game makes it possible to do something is not tacit approval for doing a thing.
In the latest installment of GTA, I have run across three characters that you can play as: Franklin, Michael, and Trevor. Franklin is a black kid from the hood that is trying to avoid the cycle of drugs, poverty and crime in the hood. Micheal is an ex-con, trying to keep out of trouble, but forced back into it. Trevor is just a mean guy who kills people without a thought. I don't like having to play as Trevor, because he is mean-spirited and just a miserable excuse for a human being. I much prefer to play the other two because they don't actually want to be criminals.
Whenever I have played GTA, I always tried not to hurt bystanders, and killed as little as the story and 100% completion would allow. I like the puzzles and figuring out creative ways to pass the mission with as little bloodshed as possible.
For some reason when "big box" and Nissan were mentioned, I immediately thought they were referring to the Nissan Cube, and not to an actual box with a car in it. God, that Cube is so aesthetically unappealing that other cars are afraid to run into it for fear of catching ugly.
Next time you look at buying a car from a dealer, make sure to point out how the value drops by 1/3 the second you sign paperwork. They fucking hate that:)
I'm sure they do hate that. However, if they had two brain cells to rub together, they would probably counter by asking if you can think of any other retail item which you could get more than 2/3 of retail value after you walk out of the door with it. Oh, I'm sure there will be a few things, but for the most part, you would be lucky to get 1/2 of retail from somebody once you walk out the door.
Why is possession of images of child abuse illegal? That would mean if somebody beat their child and took them to the hospital and the hospital took pictures, now the hospital is in possession of illegal material? An organization that used pictures of child abuse to try to stop child abuse would be operating illegally.
It seems like the positive benefits of allowing people to have or to distribute images of child abuse by far outweighs any supposed continuation of child abuse that would be caused by making the images available.
In the entire history of mankind there has never been an event recorded that has even hinted at the existence of a creator in a quantifiable way.
Sure there is evidence. Trillions and trillions of pieces of evidence. Matter exists. It could have been created by this creator or that creator, or it could have always existed, or it could have spontaneously leapt into being. Yes, the evidence doesn't PROVE that there is a creator, just as it doesn't PROVE that everything has always existed and it doesn't PROVE that everything just suddenly started existing. If you want proof, go be a mathematician. There is no proof in science.
Of course even here on slashdot, we will get modded down because "you can't attack religion"
.....are we reading the same slashdot? I see people attacking religion all the time.
Yes. you get mod up points for slamming religion. Even if religion wasn't even a factor in the article. Case in point. This article. Often religion is set up as a strawman and the knocked down. Case in point. Several posts on this article. And they are modded up. People are very proud of themselves for beating someone who doesn't know they were in a competition.
I had heard that supposedly when cell phones were the size of bricks and used a different band they *might* of caused interference at one point but I have never seen nor heard a plane lose access to its key navigation systems due to a phone or ever heard of it crash because of cell phones.
No, I don't think even back then there was ever any interference data from cell phones. It has always been about not having loose heavy (not so much anymore) articles flying around in the cabin in the event of an accident. And also, partly about cell phones spamming towers, but the FAA doesn't really care about that.
Technically, the TSA cannot make anything illegal. But that is just the issue. Once upon a time, in order to control the citizenry, you had to make laws, and the citizenry had some say into what was law and what was not. Now, you have regulatory agencies that don't make laws at all but are given jurisdiction to make what is held as equivalent to law in that if you disobey their rules, you can be charged with a crime. This is not appropriate at all and everybody should be outraged that this is happening.
Well, to be fair, titles can be misleading. I'd imagine the NSA has a sexual harassment officer too, but it isn't like that person's job is to defend sexual harassment.
Yeah, I can't tell you how disappointed I was with my company's sexual harassment training. I mean, I didn't learn any new techniques AT ALL.
And they will probably get servers to cover the shortfall faster than the government as well.
Also, I don't get why they just didn't phase this in slowly. Why not just have everyone with a name that begins with 'A' get on today, 'B' tomorrow, etc. Or use the last 2 digits of your SSN for it. I don't think anyone would claim that collecting taxes isn't an indispensible function of government.
I would probably say that is about the only thing I would trust them with. And now I am thinking that trust is the wrong word to use.

Ads for a controller I wanted as soon as I saw the headline? Not annoying to me.
Still annoying to me. What is even more annoying is trying to figure out if I want I badly enough to ignore the fact that they advertised it at me.

Exactly. If you don't me to have that box of Cheerios for free, then why did you put it on the shelf in the grocery store?
Okay. I'm sure you can cite many examples of copyrighted child porn to back up your argument.

I'd be willing to bet that 90%+ of these texters while stationary also do it while moving.
And I would be willing to bet that people who text while stationary specifically only text while stationary.
