    Apple had their chance to completely dominate the phone market and they've blown it with their exclusivity to AT&T/GSM. The gap gave Android a chance to get started with Verizon (and Sprint and T-Mobile), and now that the iPhone is possibly coming, existing Verizon customers won't care:

    1) We're already locked in 1-2 year contracts so we're not going to pay $500 for a new phone
    2) Verizon and Apple will likely not give many price breaks
    3) AT&T users may jump ship, but that's only to Verizon's benefit
    4) Android has a full set of applications and is a much more open format.

    How many e-mails were dropped as a result of the one (out of 13) DNS server that was down? How many web sites were unavailable? Did you even know there was a problem before seeing it here on /.?

    Redundancy is there for a reason - to make sure that things continue even if one or more systems are unavailable.

    Much like DRM was removed from iTMS, I'm hopeful the same will happen with Kindle, or at least some sort of reasonable borrowing mechanism.

    Other than that, you and GP are talking different purposes. Your issue is book lending. GP (and my) issue is portability.

    Oh I used it back in the day ('91). Pure trash when compared to AIX, but did have a few advantages over the other x86-based UNIX systems available at the time *cough*Coherent*cough*

    My understanding (and I'm sure some /.er will correct me if I'm wrong) is that Google only allows the market to be installed on phones or devices that have cell/data service. Google gets some portion of the monthly fee and that's what is funding Android development.

    Because you need to have a common base to start from. A dancing purple dinosaur (or a Presbyterian minister) can be shown to have educational value.

    Nip-slip? It's hard to argue it has any kind of redeeming societal value. That's not to say that people need to be fired over it, but I think the 'public' can agree on some baseline of standards. ...and as I write this, I think of some of the dreck that's on broadcast TV now. Lowest common denominator indeed...*sigh*

    I think there do need to be standards for what's shown at least on broadcast TV but I think the pants-wetting hysteria from the Family Research Council and their ilk isn't the answer.

    These airwaves are for the public use. Want to drop the f-/n-/q-bomb? Start up your own pay channel and go nuts.

    I've already addressed that elsewhere. Ebola-Reston is the primary strain that occurs outside Africa yet is not harmful to humans. It's still important to track, but as for a treatment, the other strains like Ebola-Zaire are the concern.

    Ebola-Reston is different than Ebola-Zaire. The Reston strain isn't deadly to humans (so far), so stockpile can be in/near central Africa since that's where most of the Zaire cases were.

    I dunno about that. We really dodged a bullet with the Reston strain. There's no reason it could mutate again and become airborne and lethal.

    Ebola only occurs in one part of the world unlike malaria, so you could stockpile them with an NGO like WHO to take with them when an outbreak occurs.

    I see your English comprehension isn't that good. I'll use small words:

    Jon Stewart is not the person that claimed he funded terrorists. Fox News did. Jon merely pointed out that that the 'evil prince' was the second largest News Corp. shareholder and thus if he really was funding terrorists, then watching Fox News would fund terrorists.

    I'd give you a mod point if I had one (and mention this myself if you didn't).

    Operating costs are ones that are recurring year after year and would involve upkeep, utilites, etc. and could very well be lower year-to-year depending on how the school was built. For example, if it had a modern heating and cooling system and was electricity-efficient, the operating costs could be lower, which could then be used to hire more teachers.

    she should ask the city to exempt her from ALL municipal taxes, as she is obviously a non-profit.

    And she isn't a non-profit. Her business *may* be a non-profit if she fills out the correct forms. There's no way that she personally would be exempt from all municipal taxes.

    I work for a non-profit and while purchases my employer makes are tax-free, I still pay all the same income taxes that everyone else does.

    Err no. (IANAAOL - I Am Not An Accountant Or Lawyer). Being a non-profit usually requires even more paperwork and associated fees.

    But even as a for-profit business she can deduct her business expenses (server time, the portion of rent/utilities dedicated to her home office, etc.). She wouldn't be able to deduct everything, and the amount she saves in taxes may or may not be less than the $300 she had to pay to get the license in the first place.

    My Droid has something far superior to FM radio, so I don't see the need to have yet another chip in my phone.

    My guess (and I'll admit to not RTFA) is that they're talking about installing HD Radio equipment really, not just FM Radio.

    There's a limited amount of space on the home screen, unlike the favorites list that is essentially unlimited.
