I have learnt a trade, one which I have significantly built upon after finishing trade school. I have been with the same company for 9 years. I keep an eye out for open positions, both internally and externally, to see if I can find something really interesting and/or better paid.

There are extremely few openings, and it has gotten a lot worse over the last couple of years. And that's including positions that pay worse of have crap tasks grafted onto them.

You can condescend all you want, but there's absolutely a job shortage, unless you're willing to work under shitty conditions and do a lot of overtime, or accept a non living wage.

  7. Re:Union power! on Uber Drivers Demand Higher Pay in Nationwide Protest (cnet.com) · · Score: 1

Unionizing is good. It gives workers collective bargaining power to hopefully match their employers, as well as political influence. Employment is a give and take proposition, it turns to shit when the employers just take and take without giving back, as is too often the case.

But as can be seen in some job sectors, especially in the US, some unions have become akin to organized crime cartels, ironically because of bigwigs at the top running roughshod over everything, in their pursuit of personal gain.

We're seeing it here as well. The big unions and the big employers are becoming more and more at odds with each other, probably due to increasing legislation to hamper worker rights and the concept of a fair wage. Pay raises have almost disappeared and haven't even kept up with inflation for years and years. At the same time, the big union bigwigs seem to be lining their own pockets more and more. Not to mention the rise of the so-called "yellow unions", that are basically more on the employers' side than on the employees' side, which is just ridiculous.

There needs to be a balance of power. From an outside perspective looking at the US, it seems that both unions and employers are trying to massively cheat on the scales, resulting in huge conflicts and stalemates. It certainly doesn't help that legislation in many states is extremely hostile to the entire concept of worker rights and unions in general.

Backwards compatibility was never really A Thing IMO. How many consoles were backwards compatible?

PS1 to PS2, because the PS2 basically used a full PS1 CPU for interface stuff. The original fat PS3 could play PS1 and PS2 games, but it was removed in the slim models.

Xbox 360 is compatible with some Xbox games, but there are issues and it's basically just a fancy emulator.

The Wii can play Gamecube games, and the Wii U can play Wii games, but not Gamecube games. However, those three consoles are basically just iterations of the same hardware, with much smaller jumps in performance compared to their competitors.

And of course the GBA and DS lines have some compatibility.

But the vast majority of consoles, both old and new, are completely incompatible.

But that requires a lot of processing power, which manufacturers don't want to put into their TVs.

Input lag doesn't matter for movies or other non-interactive content. It doesn't matter that there's a ~60ms lag to pause a movie.

However, it does matter with gaming, which is why "gaming mode" on most modern TVs turns off most of the image processing to reduce the lag.

There were a bunch of factors involved when he assaulted his colleague, and although none of them can excuse his actions, they can at least explain some of what was going on.

He had just been divorced, he had a possibly-malignant tumor on his tongue, he was already in hot water with the BBC for previous remarks. Had it been any other person, they would have been put on leave for a couple of months. But the BBC had wanted to get rid of him for a long time, so he got fired and it turned into a big deal. According to Clarkson, he wanted to unconditionally apologize to his colleague, but he wasn't allowed to do so.

Top Gear Clarkson != real life Clarkson.

He's a rabid buffoon on the show, but he's actually a rather reasonable person in real life. Tory supporter, yes. But not in a shitheel kind of way.

  17. The BBC had a very love/hate relationship with Clarkson's version of Top Gear. Love, because it was their biggest success ever. Hate, because they didn't like the carefree style and often controversial statements from Clarkson on the show.

They did the right thing, he shouldn't have assaulted a co-worker. He was in a bad position in his life when it happened, but that's no excuse.

  18. He did stricke a co-worker and berate him in a very unfortunate way (several slurs against said co-workers Irish heritage).

Clarkson had just been divorced, he had a possibly-malignant tumor on his tongue, he was being hounded by the BBC leadership because of previous gaffes, and he was drunk. It was a bad situation in general.

But there's really no excuse, and from Clarkson's behavior afterwards, once the dust had settled a little, seems to show that he's sorry for his actions and the mess he created.

Don't act as if this is some one-sided thing. Please.

The vast majority of people on either side are completely peaceful. But when you look at the retoric that was spewed by one candidate in particular, it's not hard to see why people are angry.
