  1. Re:A phone book listed by phone number. Useful... on Ontario Court Wrong About IP Addresses, Too · · Score: 1

Not sure if this has caught on elsewhere, but I have received phone directories that have a "reverse" look up section. It is listed by phone number which then gives you the name and address.

  2. Happened to me, but with a video card on Best Buy Customer Gets Box Full of Bathroom Tiles Instead of Hard Drive · · Score: 1

Remember way back when the 3DFX Voodoo 2 was all the rage, well I go to Future Shop (BC, Canada) and buy a tape sealed box. When I get home and open the box all I find inside is a crappy video card. Back to the store I go, stand in line at the returns desk, get to the front and present my case (no pun intended) and was promptly told "there's nothing they can do". I blurt out that this is bloody bullshit and it's heard by the manager who promptly suggests he'll call the police in if I don't behave. My response, "go ahead and call them, want the number!" So manager and I go to his office and spend the next couple of hours going through my credit and purchase history with Future Shop and researching if the box I bought was previously returned and what the return procedures were and if they were followed by staff. Now I got off lucky, had a very good purchase history with Future Shop, the employees did admit that some returned boxes do make it back onto the shelves and not returned to the manufacturer and finally the big one.....This box was PREVIOUSLY returned! The manager then gave me a new box, checked the contents, and promptly asked if this incident won't affect my future purchases at Future Shop. Since then I try to either buy unboxed OEM parts or open the box at the cashier before buying.

  3. Look at it from the Company's view ...... on Using Employee-Owned Technology in the Workplace? · · Score: 2, Insightful

If the need to get text messaging is so importantant get the company to spring for a "company" owned phone that can do the same function. And this phone will be on the person in charge of taking care of such problems if they arrive. Do you see where I'm heading with this, if you *die* or happen to quit on the spot the company will not be left high and dry having failing equipment sending text messages to a phone that is no longer in the service of the company. Of course this means you have just lost a little bit of job security but from the Company's view they will at least not have to unburden themselves in the unlikely event of your departure from employment.

It's all fine and dandy to have all your little scripts and devices installed to make you look and feel more important, but you *DO NOT* have the best interests of the company in mind. You are only thinking of yourself and what little job security you can create for yourself. You would have an easier time all around and the company would look more highly to you if you concerned yourself more making an IT infrastruture that works in the worse case senario as opposed to one that only works when you are around.

  4. Re:Cheaper in Vancouver, BC on Rent a Segway · · Score: 1

I read about this in the Province newspaper for Thursday May 15th. As another poster has pointed out, there is debate now as to where to allow the use of the segways. Sorry I can't be more helpful, I didn't know at the time that this was going to become a /. news item :(

  5. Cheaper in Vancouver, BC on Rent a Segway · · Score: 1

Here in Vancouver, BC, a guy invested some $100,000 in segways and is offering them at $20.00 per hour or $100 per day (24 hours). Now all that remains is for the city and the insurance corporation (ICBC) to come to some agreement on whether or not to allow these on sidewalks or on streets and what liability it should have. As usual lots of red tape unless you have friends in the city council to make people look the other way while they make the money.

  6. storage and stock requirements or production runs? on Self-Destructing DVD's Coming Soon · · Score: 1

If something like this was to be used either for a rental (no return neccessary) or a pay-per-view market, what would the production runs be like? Rental stores only have so much storage space and a self-destructing DVD that doesn't get returned would require the store to purchase and stock hundreds more of the same title. How would this keep the prices down? Before a rental could be rented say 100 times for a one time purchase. Now you have to buy 100 DVDs and hope to god that they *all* get rented. Something just doesn't seem thought out here (and it may be me).

  7. Try something not "mainstream" on What Makes Great Science Fiction? · · Score: 3

A few of my favorite series (book wise) are the Titan, Wizard, Demon trilogy from John Varley. The Gateway/ Heechee Saga from Frederick Pohl or for a good romp the Stainless Steel Rat series from Harry Harrison. These may not be the high brow mainstream stuff like Dune, 2001 or Foundation, but hey for me they were all entertaining and a good read.
