yeah thanks for that one. I have trouble with big words like "abstraction and media"
guys i was just talking about pirated music/movies. i like the mp3 format. and all you computer naturalists or whatever that cry every time you delude yourself into thinking your rights are being infringed need to slow up and let microsoft try to sell their product. if you think it's poop, don't buy it. if you have a political issue, write your congressman.
I'd just like to point out that this time IT'S NOT OUR FAULT. we didn't bring anyone over from Africa this time and sell them as slaves, we just developed a family of protocols. Boy thats a relief.
I believe the root of this problem has nothing to do with Linux or OpenSource or anything at all that we really consider holy on/., I think it's more of a social issue.
People want to use an os that gives them a woody. For now, that will be linux. The effect of this can be seen anywhere, even on our beloved slashdot. I kind of get the feeling that people in this community are in denial about Linux -- think of the Mindcraft fiasco. Why did everyone act so surprised?? Linux isn't the best operating system out there for every possible application. X, configured well, with a good wm still does not have the same kind of functionality, compatibility or even stability of an equally well configured NT box (I haven't got any mail in a while -- this should fix that up pretty fast). Now, don't get me wrong, I love linux, but I love it for the same reasons that most of you love it -- because it gives me a woody. When the majority of boxes around the world are running linux, when most people in our country would consider themselves computer literate, linux won't make all these people feel elite anymore when all of a sudden their gym teacher or the new intern at work has debian at home and can configure sendmail without using man. So.... if I ask for anything at all, I would ask that we stop kidding ourselves about linux and start to get an accurate perspective about it's place in the market.
Linux != god, please keep that in mind.
Oh and Linus Torvalds as the man of the century? Are you smoking crack?
hmm linux = communism? mature.. but the point is, in the real world, u cannot take resources like a barrel of grain say and make a carbon copy of it for free. you can make as many copies of linux as you want without having to give any up. THAT is why free source can work, and why it does work and will continue to work.
Linux is 40 year old technology? What part of linux is 40 years old? The only ancient thing about it is the key ideas behind it, the multiuser structure and the way the filesystem works etc. NEWS: Windows ripped that off a while back, and did a crappy job at that. NT permissions are a joke. And Linux, i might remind you, moves much faster than windows ever did. I've seen windows 2000 -- the only noticeable difference is that the menus can now fade in instead of just scrolling out like in 98 (and of course the screen tends to go blue a lot more, but i'll let it slide since it's beta, and lord knows how good ms is at fixing the bugs before release). The recent benchmarks pointed out a few bottlenecks in linux, and they are already being worked on and slated for release in 2.4 i believe. Linux developers are much better at fixing bugs etc. So, in summary, claiming that linux is "40 year old technology" is pretty redundant since it's coming along faster than ever right now.

peace i'm done
" The hackers wrote of their own "rooting" exploits (that is, hacking the root directory of a server) "
oh rooting is hacking the root directory? shucks, wtf have i been doing looking for that superuser account!

Oh and by the way, can't you already see it happening? People used to respect you for running linux, now if you run RedHat you're too mainstream.

Now the owners of slashdot can go back to smoking crack and womanizing without that "work" thing that always gets in the way.
Oh well, there's always antionline (gag)
gee man you're smart!
