  1. Unified STANDARD on Is the Dell/Microsoft Alliance Fracturing? · · Score: 0

A point of a STANDARD is that everyone can use it. Microsoft as I see it is trying to push HD-DVD over BluRay for several reasons. One of them is that I personally as a PC user find that Java is slow and clunky, it realllly hogs resources. Another is I see MS trying to pick the lesser of the 2 evils, we know well Sony's recent multi-platform rootkit from DRM, not to mention that BluRay is -LESS- compatible with current DVD technology than HD-DVD is, so HD-DVD seems more logical on the war of compatibility with existing good technologies, plus it's DRM scheme is likely to be a lot easier on hardware and software to decode than something based on Java. As I see it, MS is trying an alternate tactic of creating a -standard- in the industry to benefit everyone, in the end us, the end user, the slashdotters who would love to share all those files with our buddies knowing that we won't run into problems because of 2 very different competing technologies which would divide the market and thusly make it so there isn't a true standard. I also see MS as doing this where the talks to unify BluRay and HD-DVD failed (which is a sad story in my eyes). In the end it's better for the consumer, the average person, to have just one form of disc, and it's the consumer who gets shafted more each day as more things are becoming subscription (and thusly you have to pay) where it isn't needed to line the coffers of big companies even more, shows just how bad greed has gotten out of control and how much we, the people, suffer under corporate demand that we just give up fighting and reluctantly fork over our money.

I am suprised to see such pointlessness and rudeness around here, this isn't a forum for that type of crap, I for one would like to see honest on topic opinions from others, I don't care how it gets modded or anything like that. I just appreciate that someone takes the time to read something and post something intelligent based on the material presented. I have higher regards and hopes for people's intelligence and then I see this stuff... I don't want to bash anyone or anything, i just want honest opinions based on the topic provided.

  4. Re:Itanium 2 is great on Linus Has Harsh Words For Itanium · · Score: 2, Insightful

Itanium 2 in benchmarks are faster than any other processor used for the same thing, it even kicks the Power 4's ass! Itanium given time will have software support and better compilers that are more optimized for the Itanium architecture. Intel had many problems getting a working processor and even more trouble trying to get support. Intel backs the Linux community and then we see now that support being thrown out the windows BY the Linux community. does this make sense? Itanium yes, on paper has been around for years, yes there were lots of problems, yes it doesn't run 32-bit code well (remember Intel's first shot at RISC with the P6 processor known as the Pentium Pro? It didn't work with 16-bit code well as there wasn't a consumer OS at the time (Windows 95) that could use only 32-bit code. This chip worked well on 98/NT/2000/XP/ME and Linux/BSD). so the moral of the story is, give it a little time, support it, and it will shine :D . sig, Twat's that all about?

Ever heard of Deepfreeze? In the library in the high school I went to we use it, it dowes the same thing and the standard version is FREE to institutions and schools. The Pro version is much more customizable and allows you to change what changes to the system/ what writes to the hard drive can be kept. it's fairly inexpensive (as far as i know) to places like institutions and school. The standard version locks out everything. You can make changes while the computer is running and swap and stuff aren't affected and it just seems like a normal computer until you restart. When you restart it has NONE of the changes that were made that were on before a restart. Our school told people to save work on floppy because once the system was restarted everything they had saved to HD was gone. I just think this is a less expensive alternative to a physical piece of hardware. What do you have to do? Remove the card when you want to update the system and re-insert it later?? This sounds like a hassle.

I don't know of any BIOS tweak for video cards that would do this. It sounds like there's a problem with your monitor. You should check it out. You CAN adjust monitors physically I believe so you may want to look into that.

I agree with the suit against Disney then for this type of annoying feature. "In other news today: New DVD enhancement, red picture! yay!" Seriously, what's the point of this feature??

  10. A 486 story on IDE RAID Examined · · Score: 1

I have a 486 running both onboard IDE and a Promise Ultra66 controller. I have not had the courage to make them RAID anything yet. The reason is that I have a 4.3GB HD with bad sectors. Easy enough to manage. I partitioned 1 GB off of the drive because it was the first gigabyte and had bad sectors scattered throughout. I am running Windows 2000 Advanced Server on this machine. The specs are: 2.5 GB HD, 4.3GB HD, 8x CD-ROM, 64MB RAM, Matrox Millenium video card, 3Com Fast EtherLink XL, PnP BIOS (quite nice for a 486), AMD 5x86 (souped up 486 chip.....) at 160MHz, PCI V.90 modem, SB AWE64 sound card. To top it all off I'm actually running Windows 2000 Advanced server on it. I used to run Caldera OpenLinux 2.2 on it, then went to NT4 (a buddy of mine who LEGALLY bought it with Proxy Server 2) then upgraded to Win2k. Has anyone else tried RAID with drives with bad sectors??? anyone soup up their 486??
