I'm curious... I'm thinking that you would not be able to use this in offline transactions. If they asked for your ID to verify your signature, then they would see that your name dind't match the card.

Well, you bring up another trend, even if you didn't mean to:

Private networks. With DirectConnect, anyone can set up their own P2P network with their trusted peers. UberNode is an example of private networks that trade only LAME -alt preset standard mp3's with complete tagging, etc. Set up for quality. They used to be quite open, but have now gone slightly underground.

The downside of private networks, of course, is the smaller selection of files. (thousands instead of millions) but the security goes up. Not only that, but you're under the radar for RIAA concerns.

Do you fertilize your yard with chemicals? Have you recycled 100% everything you could? Do you buy products tested on animals? Do you live in a city of cement that has wiped away the habitat? Do you own wood furniture that came from a rain forrest? Do you live in a country that herded the natives to the casinos? Have you ever kept your mouth shut instead of defending a racial joke?

We all do things that help promote the problem. However, through different levels of rationalization we live with it. Supporting FreeNet is not supporting the kiddie porn scene. The real scenes are a tight knit group of crazies with their own system of trading pictures, stories, movies, get-togethers, etc.

Very true. This sick person could (and will) put the content up somewhere else, if not on freenet.

And to the poster who is concerned--> I don't agree with the K.K.K either, but I do realize that they should be allowed to speak their stance. And the fact that you & I support our local/state/ government when they grant permits for these types of gatherings, doesn't mean we're promoting the K.K.K.

I would say the same thing about Kiddie Porn. Supporting FreeNet is about so much more than possibly supporting (a very very small fraction of) the Kiddie Porn out there.

I thought the RIAA has been able to up this to a "criminal case", instead of just a civil case.

After all, they are handing out felonies. Can you get a felony from civil cases?

By the way, the real reason I wanted to respond was to point out that they WILL raid your home. All they need is their dail-a-warrant, and then some night while you're sleeping in the nude, they will have the ATF/Swat/ team break down your door with weapons drawn. Confiscate you computer and anything looking like evidence, and you will be busted. You are correct that they will probably only press for lawsuits that they know they can win, but that only cements the idea that they will raid your home with a warrant.

Second, your proxy idea sounds great for X users. Too bad there are XXXXXXXXXXX users that are on Kazaa wanting this. Either you find XXXXX different users willing to volunteer clean boxes for this proxy (never going to happen) or someone enterprising enough to set up tons of boxen like this for profit. Unfortunately, any success in this type of endeavor will land them in court. Doesn't matter if they win or lose either. Going to court against the RIAA is a lose-lose situation no matter what the outcome.
