O has kept private space going. O did NOT come up with the asteroids, but it was NASA that came forward with the Idea. He is simply supporting it.
And why is he supporting it? Because it accomplishes multiple things. The first is how to move an asteroid that COULD be on a collision course for the earth. BUT, it can also mean moving a small-medium asteroid to earth, to enable processing of various elements.
And of course, it means surviving in BEO for sometime.
And what your type ignores is the fact that Bigelow wants to go to the moon in the smart way. Likewise, Musk wants to go to mars in the same smart way. IOW, they are trying to offer up the shovels, homes, and rides to nations, which is where the real money is.

Seriously, what is needed is to require TIGHT regulations on companies that do this kind of BS. If they make agreements like this, then the feds should tax those companies for those areas. In fact, they should be able to limit the profits from those areas to say no more than 5%/year.
The reason is simple. With competition, each company has incentives to invest to keep customers happy. Without it, and esp. when prevented by those companies, then they have NO incentive to invest. So, by keeping profit for that region to below 5% (if not 3%)/year, then they have a strong incentive to invest to offer more amenities (i.e. more revenue to increase the profits), OR allow competition to come.

Regardless, this kind of BS is killing America. It is disgusting that companies are doing this, but understandable. What is REALLY disgusting, is that cities go along with this BS, and do not put time limits on it.

So, spaceX is a welfare queen. Hmmm.
We have invested less than 1B into SpaceX via COTS. In return, America now has a launch system that is the cheapest in the world. In addition, the company now employes 3000+ ppl, and will launch the Falcon heavy in less than 12 months, and it will be the worlds largest biggest launcher (again, the cheapest).
Now, we have invested less than .5B into them for a human launcher. Note that we have already paid Russia over 1.5B to Launch to the ISS, and for the next 2 years, will pay more than .5B. IOW, we are funding Russia's space launches, while ppl like you scream that we are spending too much on our own private companies.

Finally, as to innovation, you are right that they were not innovative. However, they are the now the first group that has ever successfully brought down a stage to the earth without it being destroyed (the ocean destroyed it AFTER it 'landed'). The Dragon is loaded with a number of new innovations that go well beyond anything ever done. At this time, SpaceX is ahead of the game and now rates as one of the most innovative space groups going.

And you will note that NONE of that includes raptor or MCT, or the X-over on FH.
