The only reason why Launch is expensive is because we use a launch vehicle exactly once. the Shuttle never had a chance of lowering the costs since it recycled all of the wrong parts. OTOH, If grasshopper is successful AND SpaceX can get at least 10 launches per F9 LV, then we will likely see launch costs of below $.5-1M / Tonne to LEO. At that point, Space is simply a new frontier. And yes, we will see loads of needs for coders.
BTW, I am not certain how old you are, but, I was using the internet back in the 80s. At that time, if you told business ppl that MS and the internet would become fundaemental to their future, they would laugh you out. They all thought that it would remain small specialties. Likewise, when working on networked and parallel DB's (TerraData comes to mind), I was told that it would never replace the mainframe and that this was all specialties. The point is, that doing hard RT, and 'specialized' apps that really work all the time, will become much more important down the road than even the Window coders today.
Yeah, I agree about the app coders. Too many idiots out there. However, many of them have earned some good money by being in the right place at the right time.
wrong. Hard RT means pre-allocated time slices. IOW, you KNOW exactly how long something will take and you allocate exactly that amount of time. ALWAYS. And rad-hard has to do with a CHIP, not the OS.
Is the market for spacecraft programming expected to grow significantly in the coming decade(s)?
Even if it went up an order of magnitude... you're still only talking a few thousand jobs. Not something I'd want to build a career plan on.
Derek, you, myself and others have been closely following space for sometime. You know that if Bigelow gets going, and SpaceX really gets launch cheap, then we are going to the moon and mars SOON. And yes, there will be LOADS of coding needed. Nobody will want something like Windows creating the blue screams of death. They will want an OS that works. Period.
You have it 100% correct. taco cowboy is so far off with his rant, that I am shocked that he was modded up. Sadly, all he is trying to do is defend NASA, but he is actually making a fool of them, not helping them.
If you like, we can backtrack to the goddard rocket and simply scale that up to make one to go to the moon.
Or we can accept that things have improved and go from there.
If you accept the later, than it makes good sense to use an OS that can have DO-178C ratings amongst other issues.
And it is no worse than where we are at.
Heck, to really get them to trust each other, let a bunch of AQ with knives loose in their compound. Any that can fight them, will do so and hopefully will learn to work with the guy next to him. And we can get rid of Gitmo slowly.
There is not a SINGLE congress critter that is trustworthy. HOWEVER, once you get to know somebody, you tend to trust them more and will generally produce better results. But when you have Boehner and Canter not being willing to be in a room with ANY dems, well, that speaks volumes. Those 2 would not even be in the same room if Jesus came back and declared himself a dem.
These ppl need to meet each other and learn to trust the other guy.
In fact, 3 nights a week, these ppl should be required to dine with each other.
It is the insane attitudes towards each other that is causing them to not compromise.
Actually, I am a business owner. Have been for sometime. And I have little issue with paying a sales tax, as long as it is applied to all. What is going on now, is BS. If the state sales tax goes the way that i want, then I will have to determine if it is cheaper for me to deal with each state individually, or whether is is cheaper to pay a single flat rate. I suspect that it is the later.
Then you are welcome to figure out the correct amount, stay up on TAC code, etc. Me, if I am business owner, I would rather have a flat tax that all states/feds agree to.
A new bill will be coming. It should be modified to have 4 changes:
1) REQUIRE a sales tax on all shipped items, including those that import into here.
2) offer the option of a flat 10% rate that is sent to the federal IRS who then doles it out.
3) offer the option of having shipping companies collect the sales tax and pay it to the feds. IOW, the sender would include the sales tax right in the payment. With this approach, the companies does not deal with ANY future tax issues/liabilities, unless they declared the item personal (i.e. person=>person so zero tax), or claim that the item is less than what was paid to them.
4) Consider mandating #3, possibly #2, for all foreign sending companies.
That is why I think that we should be offered the option to apply a flat 10% sales tax that is collected by the shipping firm. Then the shipping firm is allowed to keep say 5% of that, for handling it. With this approach, it would make it trivial for anybody, including foreign firms, to pay the sales taxes. And at 10%, where will be districts that are higher than it, but on average, the majority is bought at around 7-8% sales tax. As such, this is not too far from where it needs to be, and it removes all of the overhead of paperwork, lawyers, etc.
reagan also committed treason. He did the October surprise with Iran and then worked quietly helping the Iran Mullahs control and own the Iranian ppl.
Neo-cons and conservative republicans. Just about as bad as it gets.
Well, First off, NK happened in 1945, in which the 38th parallel was used to split the country in 2 while things were sorted out. The northern half was under Soviet control and the southern half was under US control. Both nations promised to allow them free elections and when it came time, the Soviets renegged on that treaty and installed their own person. So, no, NK was NOT a cold war product, though NK's invasion of SK WAS a product of that. It was encouraged by USSR and Communist China (even though we had saved them from Japan as well).
But, I certainly understand why you would want South Korea to have been turned over to NK. I mean SK treats their citizens HORRIBLE. After all they are spending all of their money on building nukes and allowing their citizens to starve to death. Yes, SK is just plain evil and should be turned over to being under NK control.
After all, that is the way that you see things. Right? That it is better for us to force SK citizens to live under NK rules, then to allow them to decide how they want to live. Right? That would be peaceful from your POV.
BTW, as I said earlier, this is a prelude to what we can expect from China. The reason is that like the USSR in the late 40's, China constantly breaks their treaties and lies about it.
It would be good if they would give shipping companies a choice in how to pay sales taxes.
Either figure out the REAL sales tax (i.e. based on the shipping address) OR allow them to charge a FLAT 10% sales tax. If it is a flat charge, then the feds get 2% and the rest is given to the state of interest. From there, the state divvy it between themselves and the local areas. By allowing a simple flat rate, it removes all of the hassles esp. for overseas companies. And for foreign shipped goods, they should include the tax in the shipping costs (not to be paid separately).
If a foreign company is found to be cheating on amounts (such as declaring that it is not a sale), then both parties would be on the hook AND the sending company would be banned from mailing to America.
Look, c0lo, I understand that you want peace. I saw ppl like you in the 60's. The problem is that the Chinese gov is purposely on a collision course with the west. It should be obvious to anybody that china promises a lot, but breaks there word constantly. Even when pressed about it, they continue it.
From where I am sitting, this is a redux of USSR/the west, only we are at 1947, with USSR making lots of promises while pushing massive spying operations on their friends.
They very likely outspend us in miltary by a great deal. All that we know about is what they tell the world. However, what they tell the world would not even support their sub program, let alone the entire PLA.
Oh, good god. I hate it when ppl bring up the crap about defense spending and have absolutely NO idea of what they are talking about. The first thing is that you have NO fucking idea of how much spending China does. You only know what they tell you. OTOH, you DO know how much western nations spend.
Secondly, there is the issue of how much something will buy. If China tells their gun manufacturer to sell them copied firearms of ours at $10 per, while We have to buy our at $2000 / unit, well, that is a HUGE difference. That is called buying power.
Finally, the REAL issue is how much per GDP.
So for China, they spend at 4.3 % of their GDP just on military in 2006, while the USA spent 4.06% in 2005. And ours include 2 wars, while Chinas is just building new weapons systems. And since 2006, our DOD spending has gone DOWN, while China's has gone up a great deal EACH YEAR (per their announcements).
So, stop the foolish crap about how much USA spends. It is Total BS.
whoops. Those particular books were made overseas. However, Wiley does produce books here, ships them elsewhere and then charges a fraction of what they do here.
This case was NOT about copying the book and making it on a foreign press. It is about a company that charges 1/5 of the price overseas than what they charge Americans. Interestingly, the books were still made here and then shipped there (IOW, extra costs) and then sold there cheap. So, are they dumping on foreign nations? Or is that a profitable item that they are then gouging Americans on? Considering that they do not charge even Europeans what they Charge Americans, I would say that they are gouging the US.
The synopsis speaks that the electrical field MAY allow communications. But the title make it definitive.

Compared China's record, it is.
