Wrong. If we are willing to send a manned one-way mission to Mars, we will do more science with that crew than we could do with the dozens of robotic missions that you want to send. In addition, it would cost a FRACTION of the money. The reason is that real expense in manned mission is not the getting there. It is not the surviving on the mars. It is the return trip. Get rid of that, and it is cheap to go.
SpaceX and others are NOT taking over for NASA. They are working WITH NASA to get companies built. Without NASA, SpaceX would still be trying to launch F1 and spaceX would be a fraction of the size. Likewise, without NASA's work, Bigelow Aerospace would not be working towards cheap safe inflatable space stations.
The same is true of SNC's DreamChaser, Boeing's CST-100 (though to be fair, I doubt that NASA is providing tech help, but 100% of their funding, as well as future missions), and others.
These companies are not taking over NASA. They are taking over ground that NASA has tilled, planted the seeds, watered, fertilized, pest control, and it is now time to harvest. All these companies are not just harvesting, BUT, they are getting help in doing it with both tech knowhow AND money..
So, what does NASA get out of it? They get much cheaper future access to space. Not just the ISS, but to mars, moon, etc. When they lost the shuttle, Russia backed us up. BUT, they charge us 65 million per seat. Well, with future systems, we will pay less than 30 million per seat.
Interestingly, when we lost the shuttle, all of our allies were saying that they could do the job. They just expected us to dump our money into their space programs to modify their systems. IOW, none of them were willing to step forward to take it on. They wanted NASA/USA to continue being money bags for it. Heck, we have an idiot out in the space forums who screams that SpaceX would never get off the ground and that it was a waste of money, etc. And yet, it is far less money going into private space than what that idiot (and ESA) wanted us to spend to convert ATV to a human carrier.
In addition, and this is HUGE advantage, we now have MULTIPLE launch systems so that we will NEVER be denied access to space. Note that it was CONgress and various presidents that have been disasters to our space program. They continue to gut work on going forward. They know that if we go too far forward, that there will be choice but to REALLY go into space. Yet, that is exactly what is needed. So, once these multiple private launchers are established along with multiple private space stations, along with multiple customers (nations AND corporations), then we will remain in space. Now, a few nations will spend money to go to a Private space station. But not for years in and out. OTOH, they WILL spend loads of money to be part of a colony on the lunar and/or martian surface. And that is what NASA is helping private space to do.
Okay, please tell us what you think that O screwed up WRT NASA?
The fact is, that he continues to push the private space. He actually was pushing for more money on NASA, but it was the God Damn neo-cons that gutted them, not O.
I think that in about 1-2 years, once Falcon heavy is up along with Dragon Rider's first test, O will kill the SLS. That boondoggle is costing us 3-5Billion / year. That is money that should be split into science as well as private space.
So, seriously, you gripe about O, but you are not really saying what he is causing? He has pushed a number of laws and tax changes that encourage manufacturing to come back. He is pushing hard for private companies to expand and take us to places like the moon. Does it not make more sense that NASA lead our companies into a mission for multiple space stations around earth, as well as around the moon? And you can count on it that when private space decides to go to the moon (and they will), that NASA will be there. And it makes great sense for them to contract for services from these companies.
So, again, I ask exactly WHAT is O screwing up WRT Space and NASA?
Whitman had very little to do with ebay's success. They were 6 months from going IPO when they brought her on board. As it was, the company was already established and growing. During her time, she grabbed paypal and then over the next 5 years, paypal's reputation went downhill.
In 2005, she bought skype for 2.6B, and then sold a large % of it 5 years later to andreson for a about 2.75b. IOW, it made them no money.
In fact, shortly after she left ebay in 2008 to jump into politics (failing at that, thank god), she remained with ebay helping screwing them up further.
None of that includes what happened at Disney, dreamworks, etc. She was a massive fuck-up at those locations. However, she was bright enough to always jump before it was known how bad she had made things. Then the person coming in, inherited disasters from her.
I worked at HP in the 80's. I still have friends there. I hear plenty about what a fuck-up this idiot is. She is as horrible as fiorna was.
Then you are obviously an MBA who does not have a single fucking clue of what you talk about. MBA's are now taught to pursue the short-term stock gains so that they can get their options converted. Then before the company goes down, they head out. MBA's used to be about examining companies and providing advice to engineers and others that actually UNDERSTOOD the industry. Now, we have idiots like Fiorna, Whitman, Hurd, Immelt, Welch, Rometty, Palmisano, etc. Basically, all of these idiots do not have a clue about real manufacturing or anything about the tech world.
If the west really wants to turn ourselves around, the best thing that we could do is send you MBA's to China. You would so fuck them over, that either you would collapse their nation, or they would simply line you up and shoot all of you as being evil.
In the tech industry, profits are fleeting. Deals are long term. At least, they used to be. When I worked at HP back in the 80's, we owned our own plants. We owned the production lines. The engineers upstairs could walk downstairs and see what was going on with production. If there was issues on the equipment, it was known right away. As a software engineer, we worked on these systems. We had access to all of the latest items in prototypes.
BUT, most importantly, it was 100% OURS. The IP remained with HP.
Then in the 90's, I went to work at ATT Bell Labs and when it was broken up by that idiot Fiorna, I moved to IBM watson labs. That was a precarious time. We were about to give out the code base for OS2. All of the idiots above were fighting against our using OSS, yet, we inside of watson were pushing for OSS. Then uncle lou came in and straightened things up. What he did NOT do, was outsource. Instead, he focused on streamlining operations, BUT, he kept everything IN-HOUSE and IN OUR CONTROL.
IBM, Like HP, GE, and now Dell, are ran by some of the worst MBA's going. These are inept individuals that were taught to keep the stock prices up, sell their options and most importantly, get SHORT-TERM PROFITS. Right now, All of these companies are being gutted for short-term profits. Yes, you have IP being created. However, each of these companies have moved manufacturing to China. Sounds good. Right? Wrong. The reason is that all of these manufacturing sites are not owned by a single western company. China does not allow it. Interestingly, some nations, such as North Korea, Iran, and apparently now, Venezuela, are allowed to own 100% of the companies in China. But no western company is allowed majority ownership, or even largest minority ownership. And China does NOT protect western IP, even when it is filed in China. Basically, if western nation does not share it FREELY with Chinese companies, they get large tariffs (illegally). The same happens in India.
If you own IBM, HP, GE, Dell, or Apple and think that they are a good deal, then you have not done your due-diligence or do not understand the tech and IP world.
As a 53 y.o that is having memory issues due to vertigo, I understand about the losses (to the point where it is making it difficult to code anymore). However, if you look carefully at his attitude over the last 6 years, he has changed. I think that at this time, his mind is going, and this is just more proof of it.
He has created multiple controversy towards the end of his life:
1) his blasting of Obama's push for private space support while ignoring the fact that NASA's main-line rockets are disasters.
2) his blasting of SpaceX, elon musk, and then his retraction of it.
3) now, questions about his earlier statements; IOW, a question about his veracity.
While it appears that his mind is going, or that he has allowed his political extremism to take hold, I just hope that none of this overshadow's his earlier accomplishments. Prior to his getting involved with politics, he did a lot of good work.
Seriously, cams are pretty cheap. I would think that somebody with a decent inexpensive system would be able to put up loads of cams all over runways, etc. This is not for use in insurances, but more for NTSB, and the equivalence at other nations. Basically, it is useful to see why/how an airplane loses control. And keep in mind that the vast majority of accidents occur at landing/take-off.
The fact is, that Whitman is a worthless MBA. She has left a trail of destruction, except at e-bay. Of course, e-bay had such a good thing going, that it was not surprising. But, HP is being brought down by her, similar to the way that IBM and others are going down.
And the V2 is simply Goddard's designs scaled up.:)
And as to being embargoed, they are not. USSR used to trade heavily with them, and Russia likely still does.
In addition, it has been shown that China is very active in trading with NK. Basically, NK has a similar relationship to China that USA, UK, and Canada have (though we are more equals, while China tells NK and others what to do).
The issue here is that these companies are taking shortcuts, esp. WRT animal density. As such, you have an easy chance of contamination.
Sadly, this same thing goes on with farmed fish/shrimp throughout Asia, which is leading to some new bugs that will be arriving on these to the west.
Now, why should the west be concerned? Because all too often, weastern companies, such as safeway, ignore safety issues. Safeway will actually use chicken from Asia. Likewise, they get a lot of farmed fish/shellfish from Asia/South America.
Different type of reactor? Different from what? From a light water reactor? Absolutely. A LWR attempts to contain the reaction via active means. The reason is that a uranium/plutonium based reactor has to regulate the distance between atoms, or groups of atoms (rods). With Thorium, it does not have a means of continuing the reaction (produces no neutrons). As such, thorium needs an outside source of neutrons. They can be generated, but a far easier way, is to simply make use of old waste. All of that Uranium/Plutonium can generate for you. So, how do you avoid meltdown? Seperate thorium from the neutron generation. Simple.
So, with a molten salt reactor, the temps are ran just under 800C. What happens if you put several plugs with a material that will melt when it hit 800, or 801? They melt and the thorium simply drains. Simple as that.
Now, as to weaponization, yeah, it IS possible. Probable is a whole other issue. Basically, as others mentioned, you MUST separate 2 items (U-233 and U-232) via centrifuge or gas spectrometry, but at great costs. Why so costly? Because as was pointed out, U-232 is pretty wicked. So, lots of robotics required. In addition, with being off by 1, it will be SLOW and expensive to separate these. If Iran had it with their set-up, we would have something like 25 or 50 years before they would their first amount ready for bombs. And none of that assumes the greatly increased costs of dealing with the massive radiation boost.
Basically, you have some anti-nuke, as well as pro-U, ppl speaking up against it. The world NEEDS Thorium (along with AE and other approaches to energy).
Actually, it would be better in 1976 so as to stop reagan, but with 1986, it would be possible to bust W. for selling drugs and keep him from becoming president. Then we could afford to go to this planet by now.
The fact is, that just like the last 60 years, nuke power will continue to be a part of the world's power matrix. However, the problem that America made WRT fossil fuel, is that we allowed it to dominate everything. Instead, we need a VERY diversified energy matrix. That means ALL of the AE (geo-thermal, wind, solar, etc), COMBINED with nukes COMBINED with say CH4 make sense. Somewhere down the road, we can drop CH4 and move to H2. However, our tech is not there for that. OTOH, we have plenty of CH4 here in America and should use it.
And let's totally ignore that not a single person died from the meltdown
Ok, I am a massive supporter of Nukes, HOWEVER, NOBODY can honestly claim that not a single person died from the meltdowns. In Japan, the ones that went into the reactors were much older because it was known that their lives will be massively shortened. In fact, they brought retirees in to do the work because it was known that it was going to kill.
Likewise, even IAEA says otherwise, WRT Chernobyl. 2. How many people died as an immediate result of the accident?
The initial explosion resulted in the death of two workers. Twenty-eight of the firemen and emergency clean-up workers died in the first three months after the explosion from Acute Radiation Sickness and one of cardiac arrest.
So, when ppl claim that nobody died, they are either kidding themselves, are ignorant, or lying. I have to believe that you are just ignorant of the situation.
BTW, here is Greenpeace's garbage. GP is far too extremists for me, however, in this case, they are probably closer to the truth than not. And here is what WHO says.
Now, with all that said, the issue here were companies/groups that were irresponsible. Both Chernobyl and Japan were caused by cheating at protection. The nice thing about Thorium is that NONE of this is possible (with the right design). The reason is that it can NOT have a meltdown. And if the reactors are built small and enclosed in the ground, then it pretty much makes them secured against true nasty situation.
Actually, it is cheap. The real problem is that these are built wrong. They continue to build on-site monsters with one-off software and equipment. Worse, they are doing LWRs, which require loads of active safety.
BUT, by building small thorium reactors, these can be built SAFELY, and cheaply. And if we did these, I WOULD invest into them.
What is needed is to replace all of those old reactors with new safe ones that will burn the majority of the 'waste'. Either GE PRISM or a new Thorium reactors would be smart for them. Regardless, they should be small produced in factories, rather than monsters produced on-site. And new tighter regs need to be put in place.
Yeah, as somebody that has worked for HP and IBM, I had a great deal of loyality to these companies. Not anymore. They have been sending all of the core tech overseas, and other companies who operate in nations without any decent IP coverage for them, continues to steal their tech. As such, I have quit buying from any of those companies, and would rather buy from the same ones that stole from them. I figure that if they do not care about losing their tech, for just a few dollars, well, then I can save a few dollars as well.
they also need to focus on beaming energy around, esp. that distance. By being able to beam energy around, they make it possible to provide remote support to forward lines esp. with tanks, FOBs, and even ships at sea.
The leaders are disgusting in that they make ambulance chasers look like good guys. These ppl are hearse chasers, with the intent to get others to step out of line.
