Obviously that was wrong. Dirt is a wonderful radiation shield. In addition, there are tunnels on mars. . By the time that we go to Mars, 15-20 years out, we will have the ability to grab the iron on the Martian surface and build new equipment. And it will be easy and cheap to do. OTH, sending a craft to mars to land and stay there for several years WITH FULL SUPPLIES FOR 4 years, will require loads of radiation shielding. That shielding will likely be water, but no different than if in the ground. Point is, that sending several robotic missions to mars to build up a front base, and then sending crew to stay there, will be less expensive than doing a 2 way missions. In addition, the crew will probably live longer.

Note, that if mars DOES have life, this is the far safer approach for humanity. Notice that prions can take a decade or longer to show effects. With a one-way, we start a major base, and make sure that nothing there can destroy earth. It is actually irresponsible for us to do a 2 way, while a one-way or a very long 2-way is a great deal more responsible as well as cheaper.

This is not about ideology. NASA has been stymed for 40 years under the likes of Nixon, reagan, and W. Under Clinton, he allow the neo-cons to gut NASA to which W then joined in. We NEED multiple launchers. That is a fact. Just look at SkyLab and now ISS. 2 space stations and we lost the first one because of Nixon and would have lost ISS had it not been for Russia. Congress and bad admins have gutted NASA to the point that they continue to lose important items

NOW, we will have TRUE redundancy in our systems for human launches. What will be missing will be SHLV redundancy. Thankfully, within 2 year, SLS will be dead. At that time, SpaceX will have Falcon Heavy at 54 tonnes to LEO. Within 1 year after (possibly at that time), they will have raptor second stage and will have 70 tonnes to LEO. That is the same as what SLS PROMISES. The difference is that SLS will cost 18 billion just to get it to their and cost another 1.5-2 billion to launch 70 tonnes. OTH, FH-raptor will cost less than 150 million. IOW, it will cost 1/10 of the price.

Now, so far what has kept us from going to Mars and the moon? Well, Poppa Bush wanted to go to Mars. Good plans. HOWEVER, the price was to be 50-100 billion. That got shot down. Then W/neo-cons gutted NASA and started Constellation, but seriously underfunded. So, instead of Safe-Simple-Soon, it became complex and 15 years out JUST FOR ARES I (not including Ares V). Worse, we spent 10 billion and lowest estimates were that it would be another 10 billion just to launch 24 tonnes to LEO and at a costs of .5-1 B. Pretty much useless.

If anyone hands mars and moon to Russia and China, that would be you commi-loving neo-cons who are more interested in gutting America and NASA, than in help America and the future.

The reason is that private space wants to go to the moon. We should take advantage of this. The X-prizes, and COTS approach is paying off with equipment being developed. Even the sub-orbitals, such as blue origin, will be interesting in that their equipment with some mods and MINIMAL amounts of ground set-up, will be capable of working on/off the moon. Basically, the moon is a good step for private space along with gov. help. But when going beyond the moon, that is where NASA should focus. Sending a small crew to an asteroid is a good first step to Mars. Well, that is the kind of things that private space will NOT do. Likewise, having NASA and others work on tugs esp. nuclear engines such as NERVA, makes good sense.

Private space is planning on being on the moon by 2020.
So, lets do both the moon and an asteroid.

SpaceX has already sent a dragon to and from space. It will later THIS year ( or early next year due to Progress's failure), berth with the ISS. Considering their record, it is quite likely that they will succeed.
Now, SpaceX has already developed everything for the dragon to support man, EXCEPT for a crew escape system. They have life support, seats, avionics, etc. And if we are willing to accept that it has undergone enough testing, say 4 successful cargo launches to/from the ISS (which would make it safer than the shuttle), it would be easy enough to simply launch it without an escape system. In addition, with 2 berths and 3 returns, it would be considered safe enough to change out the nose from CBM ti LIDS and then use it as a lifeboat for the ISS. So, we are not that far removed from launching humans to ISS.
And that is JUST spaceX. Considering that COTS1 was done successfully, then I would say that this is much more than vaporware.
Also, as I spoke of, ULA Atlas is being man-rated even now. All that really means is a lot of sensors and an extra string. Nothing hard on that. That leaves the vehicle. CST-100 is bending metal and so is SNC. Life support and avionics for both have already been developed. This is not that big of a deal.

Basically, we are far beyond vaporware. In 2 years, we gain multiple launcher, assuming that the neo-cons do not kill off commercial space. Sadly, they are hard at work on that.

However, as I wrote down below, just about anybody that would go to Mars for a 4 year trip, will have little issues with staying 5-10 years, or longer.

Look, we can send a crew there QUICKLY via chemicals. We have the infrastructure for it. What we really need is a NERVA engine on a tug to push a BA unit or two, to get us to Mars in 3-6 months, and then get us back in the same timeframe. However, it is to our benefit to spend the money setting up a base and doing core research there prior to worrying about bringing back the crew.

These are instead, likely to be heavily science oriented and not minding being loners or in small groups of ppl. IOW, most ppl that apply for such a position would WANT to go on a one-way.

Taking this further, lets assume that most are not. Well, we are talking maybe 6-12 ppl that would be sent on one-way missions. It is VERY easy to locate ppl that would want this. But even when we are talking of one-ways, what is really happening is that these ppl will go, plan on staying there for at least 5 years, if not 10. By then, we should have fast transportation, most likely nuclear. If they want to come back, and assuming no biological contamination issues, then we bring them back. However, I am guessing that they will not want to come back. I mean, if you lived in a place for say 10 years, built up a base and made it habitable for another 20-50 ppl, would you want to come back to earth? Nope. There would be so many interesting things to live on Mars.

to send the astronauts on a one-way mission to mars. The idea of bringing them back is irresponsible. The reason is that we can send a mission to mars in less then 6 months. HOWEVER, returning them is a whole different matter. It will be at least a year. As such the better solution is to send the crew to Mars for at least 10 years, or possibly life.

There are other good reasons to make at least the first couple of trips be one-way. It allows the sending group to focus on keeping a crew alive. That is actually cheaper than coming up with a return vehicle and the fuel for it. By sending one-way, it gives them time to build a base out while doing research on the planet.

However, the Chinese ministry KNOWS that (which is why they forbid the publishing; they wanted the correct numbers and technology, but that was figured out at the end of the trip when all of their packed gear disappeared, though not personal luggage; the gear is used for monitoring much our national and state land). The issue is that turning this stuff on would actually drop their SO2 and NOx a great deal, BUT, it costs something like 10-20% efficiency. China is more than 80% coal based for electricity. Imagine if we lost 8-16% of our electricity. Anywhere in the west, it would be TIGHT. In china, they are already tight. It would be catastrophic to their ability to subsidize their energy and dump. So, China will continue to pollute. They absolutely have ZERO intention of turning on emissions control. NONE.

Note that they are required to install it per a treaty with Japan. However, Japan left out that little part about saying that it had to be used. So Chinese utilitiy plants simply pull them out of line. And yes, this was vetted by a friend of mine that did the work there. They tested the air all around the plants that were less than 1 year old and they were putting out almost as much pollution as the old ones (it was a bit cleaner, but not by much).
Likewise, China had been dumping their solvents into the rivers. Now that is prohibited. Instead the gov helps load these on major fishing boats that go to America and dump it on the way. So, rather than deal with it, or simply dump it in their own river, they now dump it directly in the Ocean.
If walmart was sincere, they would be picking up the Panel from American-made or at least Western-Made . I doubt that they will.
