Actually, the pine beetle kill is fine for lumber. The reason is that the beetle does not penetrate deep into the tree. It is just under the bark. What actually kills these trees is that mold that the beetles carry. As such, these trees standing there are no different than drying timber before it is turned into lumber.
Here in Colorado, we have loads of ppl wanting to go for the spruce, and some of the pine. BUT, the pines tend to be smaller, so those that are interested have been bio-energy companies, along with trim. Right now, I have been removing the white trim and putting in 'blue pine' trim, with 1/4 round oak trim.

Seriously, our forests are loaded with dead trees due to beetle kill. Start harvesting the heck out of them and replant. This is much cheaper than bombing.

  9. Well, that sux. Thanx for the good links.

  10. It is far far cheaper to recycle steel than it is to dig up and process iron, molybdenum, manganese, chromium, and nickel. This is why China is stopping importing things like paper and electronics, but continues to import metals.
BUT, I agree about wanting cheap energy. That will always be the case. That is why we need things like SMRs.

  11. that is why I suggested to take it up the great lakes and have one of the mills cut it and recycle it. Transporting that metal all over really makes little sense. However, the ship can be tugged through the panama, and then up into the great lakes. There are multiple steel mills right on the great lakes. From there, use robotics to cut it up. And even if they lose money on the enterprise, there are multiple ships coming, including subs and other AC. By setting up robotics to cut up ships and recycle, it should enable future ones to be done cheaply.

I am a supporter of Musk, but that does not mean that I will invest wildly into a losing operation. However, with the massive manipulation that is going on by the shorters, I expect that this will run all over the place. So, far better to sit tight and let Musk do what he is good at: build up a winning company.

  17. Most nations are not capable of building an Aircraft Carrier. That is why CHina bought Russia's because they did not have the tech know-how.

  18. This why they need to simply use robots to cut it up and then smelt it. Easy enough, to raise the temp to say 1100 and then drain off various metals including copper. The problems come when ppl try to recycle everything, including plastics, etc. Just burn them, but capture the output.

  19. robotics.
Seriously, the coming ships are ideal for breaking down with robotics and simply recycling.

  20. The carriers still have military value. As such, far better to just recycle that. And in this case, it could actually help any of the steel mills with lowering their costs.

  21. Once the carrier is stripped of the nukes, it should be loaded with a great deal of wonderful steel and just raw elements. Take it to one of the new up/coming steel mills on the great lakes and let them have it. They will tear it apart and then recycle it.
