Liability and insurance rates will probably put and end to private space rockets Why? I think that once they have several successes, then they will be ok. As it is, the feds are the main buyers up front. Both DOD and NASA have a vested interest in seeing these companies be successful. Simply put, the feds are not going to allow these companies to fail. They want to drop their costs.
The first flight was a test and had experiments for air force students. The feds paid for the launch. I seriously doubt there was insurance. The 2'nd had no payload. The 2'nd had a demo sat. The 3'rd had a gov load as well as some minor projects riding for free. I seriously doubt that ANY insurance money was involved. More importantly, I doubt anybody will be willing to until they see 2 or more successful launches. Then they will. I am hopeful that the next launch is a winner. And I suspect that it will be before Nov. time frame. The simple fact is, they have no problems whit engines. I would guess that having their rocket sit on the pad for so long probably allowed some corrosion on a wiring. Hopefully, they did not blow the rocket, but we will find out.
Anyway, I didn't understand why SpaceX choose an entirely new design, instead of a tried and tested engine. Doesn't seems like a good idea. Trivial really. If he buys from others, they control price and tech. Right now, he CONTROLS his company and the price. More important, the engines have performed DEAD ON. The first failure was due to a fuel line leak caused by corrosion. The second was due to engine running out of fuel to the engine(several reasons caused that). The third remains, but the first stage worked. It was separation that was the problem. IOW, then engines have done great.
Why are you a cop? Did you present data to me that would indicate that I should release these computers? How do I know that the evidence was real? What capabilities does the average person have to judge that? If this was about ivers, then the average person has little capabilities of judging it. If about AQ, same thing. The simple fact is, that if these guys had overwhelming evidence, then ask the librarian to set aside the computers (I am sure that nearly ALL librarians would so), and then FOLLOW THE LAW and get a warrent.
FBI should not even be ASKING for such things without a warrent. Seriously, if this was about ivars, and he was working solo, then nobody else is going to touch the computers. OTH, if he was not working solo, and they obtained data from thee computers, then any actions that even APPEAR to be derived from these will be thrown out in later court. IOW, both FBI and Librarians actions could make it such that more guilty ppl get to walk. Of course, this could just be a clean up job.
Having a masters means little. It simply means that you have mastered one item (which is Library, not legal issues). That directer SHOULD have had enough common sense to KNOW that allowing the FBI or ANY gov official to take things illegally, will have several possible consequences.
The first is that they will tend to do this to other libraries as much as they want.
The director had a REASONABLE alternative of setting those computers aside and then telling the FBI to obtain a warrent. By taking them offline, it avoids any possible opportunity for somebody to erase or damage them.
If this is a criminal case, it is possible that if this data is used to indict others, they may be able to argue that the FBI ILLEGALLY obtained that data. As such, it will invalidate their find. IOW, this could allow a guilty person to easily walk.
This director should be fired. Now. Not tomorrow. TODAY! And those FBI should also be fired. The fact that they believe that they have this right is SCARY. They KNOW better. That means that they view this as their right to do so.
I get a kick out of this. Looking at your postings and several other newbies in here, it is obvious that you folks are working in the space industry. More importantly, you are working within the NASA system on Ares. SpaceX had a spectacular failure on the first go. But top ppl at both NASA and DOD said that the 2'nd launch had minor issues, that were easily correctable. Yes, I think that we all remember that falcon I failed. OTH, do you think that they will continue to have failures? And once falcon I works (most likely today or tomorrow), do you think that it will require more than 2 launches to get the falcon 9 working? Then once they compete dragon WRT COTS-C, do you really think that they will NOT be doing humans within 1-2 years? My bet is they will launch first humans by 2011, maybe sooner.
our problem has been that NASA has not been willing to use redundant systems. Even now, NASA has given spacex a COTS-C contract (cargo), but is fighting giving spacex a cots-d contract(humans). COTs-D is where the real money AND need is. Even now, EU has their ATV for putting up cargo, and Japan is looking to have theirs next year. After the shuttle retires, That will leave the world with only 2 human launchers; Russia and China. Russia is fine with that. They are currently charging 50 million / PERSON. Spacex is looking to charge 50-100 million for 7 ppl. And it gets worse. If something happens to Russia (say a new flaw shows up), then it would only be China that could keep the ISS going.
America NEEDS spacex (and Orbital Transport as well). So does the rest of the ISS team.
Microsoft has lots of money to hire key Apache developers, if they actually plan to use the code and want good service from its developers on a 24/7 basis. So, this $100,000 contribution and the partial patent grant aren't about interoperability.
Who says Microsoft wants to use this code? From the earlier article, it sounded like they wanted to improve the code that other people use, to make it easier to use on Windows. And this way they don't have difficulties with convincing people to become @microsoft.com, or with convincing people to trust and work with people @microsoft.com.
So, this would be in the same fashion as using Sybase Server to create 1 sql server? Or would it be in the same fashion that MS did MSIE with spyglass in which they agreed to pay a percentage of every MSIE sold (in spite of the historical rewriting in wiki)?
Nothing good will come of this. Name me 3 projects that MS participates in, where the project actually benefits?
I have suggested many times, that a monopoly should be created from the block level green box, to the house. That monopoly should not do anything BUT that monopoly. Nothing else. Then it should allow up to 50-100 providers to come to each box. Any smart company who goes block level to CO will then sell hookups to others. Of course, competition means prices will be kept low.
The benchmarks is looking at the ID and making assumptions. These benchmarks run on Windows. So another possibility is that MS does an optimization that few know about. Any of these are plausible. Simplest answer should rule until proof shown otherwise; Bad assumptions made in OS or program.
Best redneck response ever. '..their'(instead of there) 'pres' '...sats at 40-50k' Classic, tell me you're real!
Total A55hole (or simply a troll) response. The on their was part of a difference sentence that I forgot to delete (it was late and I was working on a different project). The pres and sats comes about because I have been on the net since the 80s. Some words of mine tend towards abbreviation. And yet, you knew what they were.
One day, I hope others figure out why the net breeds ppl like you. Long ago, the net actually discouraged flamewars and to have ppl assume the best. Now, ppl like you assume the worst and use insults when not needed. Is it the net, or simply your lack of manners and education?
Now, we have an "entirely-useless-chemical-laser-carrying 747"????
Exactly what do you think that is for? Rockets in boost? A laser in space would do a better job. Have you looked closely at the turitt on the front. Surprise, it can point and shoot UPWARDS. Now we have the ability to take ALL chinese sats around the world, not just approaching our soil.
Do you think that this is our ONLY laser? What exactly do you think happened in 1977, when Carter found out that USSR had a ground based laser? This is the man responsible for stealth aircrafts. He is the one that wanted to remove all of the large naval ships except for aircraft carriers and SSBN, and move to smaller heavily automated crafts that worked together (surprise; that is the navy that we are moving to now). Take a trip to Alaska sometime. Wonderful things up there to see (or perhaps NOT to see).
If EEstor is real, no doubt the feds are going to buy a lot of this. We have railguns and lasers coming on line. Our new DDX will have both. The ABL is designed not to just shoot rockets, but also to take out sats (it is flying at 40-50K feet; a great deal less atmosphere). And of course, our f22 were designed to handle lasers and we will shortly have them on their. My understanding is that future guns for the F22 will also be rail guns. Funny thing is, that most countries are gearing up with crewed planes. We are moving towards automated because we have figured it out that a human is not going to be able to manuever fast enough to avoid these things. But an automated system combined with a remote pilot, just might. Even the M1 is to be modified for these.
And EEStor may make it all possible.
All these toys will be held back for the next real war (and not just a bungled invasion). I think that any pres that tries to bring these forward for something as small as Iraq/Afghanistan would be lynched by the DOD.
Showing receipts means absolutely SQUAT. Showing HIS money going into purchasing these means he is innocent. He would also have to explain exactly how he obtained all these items at below costs.
As to pardons, I think W/McCain would use years of service and his current age for reason for pardon. Obama would have no reason other than getting along. Hopefully, if the man is guilty, he does a LONG time. We need to start imprisoning congressman like Stevens, DeLay, Hastert and Jefferson as examples to others. In addition, this admin needs to undergo close scrutiny and the next president needs to allow it. We can not continue to have crooks in office. That is killing America.
Well, yeah, but that is because of how they chose to implement it. The funny thing is that they are pulling minerals and disposing of them by flushing them. They could either re-inject the water into the ground (but that adds costs and lowers efficiency) OR they could pull these chemicals from the water. I am willing to bet that they a number of them could be sold. Others could simply be flushed into the volcano.
In the end, they really need to make a different choice. They are going to pollute some nice area.
True, But McCain has for the last decade (esp for the last 2 years) been playing a game of play along to get along. Of course, that may just be long enough to get the seat and then go back to the McCain of 1990's and before.
Being indicited is nothing. Yet. Once convicted, either W or McCain will pardon him, if they are in office. Considering that the pubs appear to have interesting item on the dems (why would the dems, most of all waxman, not lift the gag order on Sibel Edmunds), even Obama might pardon him.

More importantly, if the directer changes tune about why he turned over the computers, then there is an issue.
I suspect that he actually is going to build a similar craft. Just the engine, exterior, etc will be different. :)
Anyway, I didn't understand why SpaceX choose an entirely new design, instead of a tried and tested engine. Doesn't seems like a good idea.

Finally, his engines ARE tried and tested. A lot.
That was a load from mjasay. Frosty Piss did not submit this one

Actually, have the co-op offer up 5-10 year contracts for servicing it. That way, another company can compete OCCASIONALLY.

EEStor and MIT have super capacitors that are probably better for this. Higher efficiency and most likely lower costs.

No clouds, low humidity, line of sight. Guess what laser weapons don't do well in?
Yeah, our DOD ppl just can not think for themselves. Thank God we have you to point out the screw ups that we make. Or, you can think that perhaps not all is a fake:
Very quickly, deuterium was dropped in favor of hydrogen, since it is far less costly and more readily available. However, later it was realized that HF produces infrared radiation in the 2.6 to 3.1 m waveband, a region of the spectrum absorbed by water vapor in the atmosphere. Interest was renewed in DF, which produces radiation in the 3.7 to 4.2 m band, which passes easily through the atmosphere.
THough to be fair, we still need a line of sight. Of course, that could be bounced off a sat.
And that was just the soviet union in 1984.
Pentagon confirms Beijing's anti-satellite laser
This was in china in 2005 (confirmed in 2006).

If the reporters QUIT reporting on china, then china will stop this insane approach. Bad press is better than NO press.
