Bruce Campbell is a comic genious. Just picture him strapping him on the chainsaw after cutting off his own hand in Evil Dead 2. Those one liners kill me.

Aside from the security concerns, I think this is a phenomenal idea for a "democracy". The thing that kills me is that a lot of us complain about the system, but then don't do anything about it. I say, put your money where your mouth is and vote.

This has serious implications in terms of a dynamic shift in the demographics of those who vote. If the largest cohort of people voting is 60 years old and up, it's no surprise that medicare and social security are some of the top issues in congress. With a shift in the demographics towards a younger (and more liberal) crowd, what will the top issues be if we make up the largest voting block? Perhaps concerns over the constitutionality of the DMCA and the US Patriot Act will top the list. Do you think a 65 year old is downloading the most recent tracks from Brittney Spears or Puff Daddy *shudder*? Do they worry about litigation from major record labels? Do they care about whose phones are being wiretapped or who is being interrogated at our bases in Cuba or Egypt (under the US Patriot Act)?

In an age when voter turn out is at an all time low, this technology could not be more timely. One of the most tragic freedoms that our constitution allows is the right to be apathetic.

I was a huge fan of Moral Decay. I've read some posts that indicate that the MUD is still active (131.247.113.1 port 3003). Some of the earliest open source coding I did was with LPC (the MUD engine core).

It's amazing how MUDS are both simultaneously fascinating and a complete waste of time. I had a great time on them growing up, but they are just too addictive for their own good.

I agree. If you don't find the internet useful, you're not contributing anything useful to it.

The internet is quite possibly the most powerful (and most unreliable) information resource ever created by mankind. Initial research has indicated that increased use of the internet has noticably improved grades in lower and upper school. There are tons of sites about how to use the internet to do research in school. We should be teaching kids how to use this tool effectively by being able to seperate the crap and propaganda from real information resources.

I can understand how industry would be a little disheartened about its usefulness after the bottom fell out of the .com industry, but that's old news.

I was only half serious. My point was that given a loose interpretation of the DMCA, using a photocopy machine might violate the law. The way I understand it is, if a technology is used to violate copyright law or assist in the violation of copyright law, then you can be found guilty for using that technology. Personally, I think the DMCA is unconstitutional, even if it is still on the books.

Does the DMCA say anything about about online books or other texts?

This thread smells vaguely of 451 F

Like biological evolution, the more selective pressure (in this case legal pressure) put on the technology, the faster it will evolve defense mechanisms to avoid detection. Another added benefit is that the technology can always outpace the legal system.

Has anyone been prosecuted for photocopying a book at the library under the DMCA yet?
