  1. I see you used the word also, and because of that I agree, technically. My point was that calling it an emergency break sort of implies you shouldn't use it except for emergencies, which is wrong.

    He was killing them because they were (from his POV) political adversaries and subversives. Had they stayed out of Caesar's domain he might not have bothered.

  3. Maybe it was a fault with the car, then. It was a rental, so I thought no more of it. Not a huge sample size, but only other places I've driven an auto were Midwest states so the issue never came up.

    If, based on historical data, left-handed flautists are less likely to run into trees you can charge them lower premiums.

    If, based on historical data, fat trombonists are more prone to recidivism you can give them stricter sentences.

  6. Maybe I had the timing wrong (had always driven a manual before) but I found that didn't work. If I tried to hit the gas as I released the brake it rolled back. If I put gas on earlier, before releasing the brake, it made a clattering noise that I didn't like the sound of.

    I once took over some stuff from a guy who couldn't code "test at the top" loops and "test at the bottom" ones. I forget which way round it was, but you can imagine what a mare's nest it was. Flags & conditionals for whether or not it's the first cycle, auxiliary counters that are one more or one less than the proper counter would be...

  12. Blimey, Gunner Graham. If you're saying that history is complicated and full of unexpected consequences, butterfly effects and unknown unknowns[1] to the extent that it would be almost impossible to simulate a decent portion of it[2] in a game I'm right there with you.

    I think the real giveaways are a comma after a verb of sensing/knowing - like "Check, that the file is open" - and of course the verb at the end putting.

    If a computer program deduces from the fact that you are male that you will live a shorter time, and this makes women receiving lower payments due to them being more likely to live longer.

    What's that got to do with the likelihood of wrecking a car?

    If you took a black person, and remove them from all the racist and discriminatory influences, AND the lower social status (that has been caused by lots of discrimination before), then won't end up with a higher crime likeliness than if you took a "normal" white person. Its probably even more caused by the social status than discrimination.

    You know, that'd make an excellent movie.

    It doesn't and it's not intended to.

    It's statistics and probabilities, just like how insurance premiums work.

    If you say so. It's more likely that you saw a graph with a shifted axis (there's one in my link) and jumped to conclusions, then compounded it by failing to do a sanity check. Britain might not be what it was but a movement of that magnitude in its currency would be reported on Mars.
